Wow. That was sweet. But I’ll confess, I don’t know where the gogo puts the pressure on the neck.
Usually looks like a pain tap, like it hurts the throat, but this looked to me like the pressure was pulling his head sideways and cutting the artery off, like a triangle almost. But this guy didn’t look sleepy, he looked miserable, that’s why I think he tapped. Anyone wanna hip me to what that was?

Nothing like making someone tap with your foot, Vinny = sick BJJ.

he did stap because of the smell of old cheese lol

normally the legs and foot are supposed to choke like a guillotine and you pull the neck so it puts pressure. But this one looked more like a neck crank

Beast w/ 8 Limbs Says, in 4-29-2011 at 19:44:27 from

A gogoplata unlike most of what we call “chokes” IS an actually choke. A choke technically, is when you cut off air supply to the brain. the moves we call “RNC”, and “triangle choke” are in all actuality, STRANGULATIONS, which is when you cut off blood flow to the brain. IT’s easier to positions your hands/arms into a choke, but it takes longer for a person to pass out do to lack of air, than it does to pass out from lack of blood to your brain. Also, chokes are much more dangerous, in that you can easily crush someone’s windpipe, which almost certainly results in death. From the top, a gogo, takes on more of a neck crank type situation, especially if, like Nemkov, your opponent turns his head.

Phatty Says, in 4-29-2011 at 19:54:11 from

Not trying to be a troll, but cutting off air supply to the brain and blood flow to the brain is the same thing. It’s ur blood that brings the oxygen to ur brain.

BJJ7777 Says, in 4-29-2011 at 19:55:21 from

@Hands of Stoned: It’s sweet to see but painful to feel. Gogo means throat in Portuguese and the pressure is formed on the trachea of the neck which is where the “Adam’s apple” is located. It’s a painful choke unlike the carotid artery chokes i.e rear naked choke or even triangle which are “painless” chokes because with those you just cut off oxygen supply to the brain and that’s what makes you lose consciousness and go to sleep. Vinny was pulling that guy’s head on his shin bone to make it even more painful. You are correct, that guy looked miserable because he was in pain.

Well when you suck you have to make yourself look good by tapping no names at small shows.

RuttenJump Says, in 4-29-2011 at 20:41:34 from

no its not.If you press the trachya(guillotine choke, gogoplata, wandy’s r*** choke :p)it cuts the air.a blood choke you need to points of pressure on each side of the necks compressing the jugular(triangle, arm traingle ,ananconda etc). With blood chokes you can breath a little bit but air chokes are considered more brtal because you cant breath at all and it hurts your neck most of the time

neck cranks should be illegal

Wowow Says, in 4-29-2011 at 21:21:53 from

The airway choke being applied prevents air intake to the LUNGS and in turn prevents air to the brain.

A blood choke prevents, yes, the oxygenated blood from reaching the brain.

So he’s not wrong, you’re both right in that sense.

Honestly, you could have looked that up in the time it took you to write your message – that’s what’s wrong with the world today.

daym a gogoplata! that is like one of the hardest bjj move to pull in an mma match.. i can recall nick diaz and shinya aoki pulling this kind of move.

@ wowwow That fisrt part was what I was going to write. Almost verbatum. But I have to respectfully disagree with the last thing. Sometimes that “just google it” mentality works. But like anything, too much can f**k you up. If we all start googling all our stupid questions all the time, we’re gonna start losing that human connection. I could have googled my question in 2 seconds, but then I wouldn’t have gotten to feel these guys out. I’m also asking to see who knows their s***, who doesn’t, and who googled it and passed it off as his own(RuttenJump). Dig????

Halzo Says, in 4-30-2011 at 00:45:36 from

ACTUALLY PHATTY…. you are more wrong than right… see, we are talking about jiujitsu…. all the chokes he just talked about are what we call “blood chokes” which means you are not getting oxygen to the brain from “BLOOD”…. i dont even know of any bjj chokes that are simply “air chokes”… gogo platas are hardly an “air choke” by definition cause its more of splicer to your throat, so its the pain that makes you tap.

sticky Says, in 4-30-2011 at 01:59:00 from

If you ever have to start your comment with “I’m not trying to be a troll, but…” You should probably think again about saying it.

Theviciousone Says, in 4-30-2011 at 10:47:36 from

This went from a choke to a neck crank. By turning his head to defend the choke he quickly opened up a modified and may I say nasty neck crank. He would have had to apply the gogo straight on top of him to make this a “choke” much like the positioning of an inverted triangle. He actually defended the choke but the neck crank crept up. That was a pure pain submission.

Although an inverted gogo with proper postioning wouldn’t feel to good on your trachae regardlessly it would open a more effective “choke”. Shin bone on the throat, unlike an inverted triangle is always going to hurt. A gogo is really an effective submission for choking when on your back, like Nick Diaz did to Aoki. Not all chokes are meant to lull you to sleep, especially from on top.

If you watch the fight video, you can hear the poor dude yelp like a puppy if you listen closely.

PitFighterZ Says, in 4-30-2011 at 11:31:14 from

We need to do this more often. An actual discussion about technique with almost none name calling or exacerbated anger (jokes are welcome).

@Theviciousone: yep. He yelped. And yes, it wasn’t a choke at the end, it was a very nasty neck crank with the addition of a smelly foot on your throat.

RuttenJump Says, in 4-30-2011 at 11:39:43 from

Or i learned it in a BJJ class what alot of people who explain technics but never really learned the technic, they just watched it and repeated the commentator.

RuttenJump Says, in 4-30-2011 at 11:43:31 from

And cutting 1 artery like you were talking about will never make a guy pass out.Thats why theres a guilotine defense that you only need to put your face in the guy’s ribs so he will compress on 1 artery and it will make you survive until you get your head out.Thats why 12 guys got choked out by Cody mackenzy. They almost all used that defense but his guillotine is modified and isnt an air choke its a blood choke
