Kind of looks like you just push somebody with your knuckles with your body wieght behind it to me. I think alot of ancient oriental martial arts were more show than actual fighting skill.

Everything I was ever taught always had an intended purpose, even if I didn’t see or understand it immediately.

It is interesting for modern martial artist to discount anything from the ancient warriors. Ask yourself, when the last time your whole family heritage and financial worth was at the tip of your fist? To think that the modern world is reflective of a high level of combat skill such as even 150 years ago is a joke. As an example shaolin quan fa has a basic strength requirement of holding the horse stance (bent legs at the knees with the hamstrings parallel to the ground) for 1hr. Then you had to add weight to your body in some fashion until you can reach about 100 catty. How many of you naysayers can do even 15 minutes. I have taught basic developmental exercises like this to students who with nothing else added to thier already existing weight training workouts improve lifts 35% in just 2-3 weeks. Then what do they due? Stop becuase the pain is too great and then there lifts go back to normal. If you doubt the benefits of this VERY BASIC requirement try it.

Another example is how often modern fighters (boxing and mma) break thier hands in competition and training. This is due to the fact that they often train the muscles but fail to train the bones to take the impact of the force being put out. Why? To remodel the bone takes about 3 years of practice where you have to train about 1.5 hours perday 5-6 days per week. How many fighters would put in that much sacrifice and delayed gratitude in this day? Not many! But, if you life, not livelihood, was at stake you would put in that kind of work. So the arts that are more advanced take alot more time. The kind of time that the video game masters of the world would not invest in hard bloody work.

There has been a degredation in the martial arts, especially the traditional, but that is partly due to the fact that money is king and people are lazy. Just like their are more people with bachelor degrees in this day but less people earning Phd’s there are more martial artist but few whom dig very deep.

I can understand people laughing at fictional kung fu movies as being irrelevant to mma competition- but to completely discount all the teachings of traditional martial arts in general is just foolish, arrogant, and closed minded. Such techniques focusing on breathing for example, and strengthening the body (along with the mind) are fundamental to all people who consider themselves fighters regardless of style. Times and training have changed, and you must remember that MMA is a sport with rules so that much of what is focused on these days is based within these rules. The “martial” in traditional martial arts means that they were intended for war, fighting for life and death. Pressure points and attacks meant to kill people, for example, have no place in MMA as a sport. Sure there are plenty of douche bag MC Dojos that pawn off whatever they teach just to make money and i’m not defending them at all. Im just simply saying that there are fundamental principles of traditional martial arts that should be respected and appreciated by all fighters.

the only place i could kinda see this working in mma, if it’s really real, would be striking from the bottom. since distance is so limited there.

on the other hand, it would be a lot more useful in real life. that whole pointing to a punch thing is like the trojan horse of hits. it goes from insulting to teeth breaking in about an inch.

again…. if it’s even real.

1st off Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Steven Segal, or JeanClaude Van Damme have never competed in full contact fighting so I think they would get their asses kicked in todays MMa world. So who knows how they would hold up in a real fight.

2nd I doubt a 1 inch punch can make someone fly across the room and i wish that dude would try to break that board against the grain see if he would break his hand.

Last, does anyone really think That Bruce Lee would be the lightweight Champion in the UFC…I dont know…I think he’s the best I’ve seen in a movie but not in a real fight

Jet li was a fighter long before he was in a movie and Jackie Chan has been hit by cars, buses, bats, even helicopters and i’m pretty sure they hurt a lot more then punchs and kicks.
So Ed Capone read some thing before you open your mouth women

Maybe its you should do some more reading WAR…

Jet Li has never had a professional fight as he only trained in wushu forms,Saying that Jackie chan hs been hit by whatever is irrelevant as so has every other stuntman but we don’t see them being called fighters.

JeanClaude and chuck have a little fighting pedigree with chuck having a great record but it wasn’t full contact so hardly comparable.I’d like to see steven seagal in a real fight as he knows his shit but like Ed said they wouldn’t stand a chance against an average MMA fighter these days.

Luke Says, in 3-25-2008 at 02:24:04 from 91.89.124.241

Hi everybody.

The so called 1-inch punch how it is shown here is just a ideal way of practicing it, it is not the way you would use it in a fight because as ayou could see there is much preparation going on even by the masters before executing it :)

No, in WingTsun for example there are variations of that punch that are delivered to distinct points like liver, solaplexus, larynx etc. in positions were it is dangerous to take the hand away from the opponent (loose the contact). It is then mostly done with the palm of the hand. I hope nobody thinks this would take a good fighter out. It is just a useful ‘tool’ to make a quick distraction and finish the combination with a nice hook or elbow.

Example.of.short.punch Says, in 3-26-2008 at 12:00:51 from 149.173.6.110

The best example of an extremely powerful short punch is the young Mike Tyson’s left hook. Not quite the demo’ed “1 inch punch” but definitely from closer range than jab or cross or superman punch, etc. with incredible whole body power behind it making a seemingly short distance of hand traveled (from cocked fist to jaw) disproportionately powerful. Really the exact same thing. It may be difficult to pull of the exact motion Bruce demo’ed but obviously a top boxer in his prime could pull off something related – again and again. Go watch the old Tyson highlights.

C’mon guys… Lighten up. I cant believe you guys are even discussing what would happen if the likes of Bruce Lee stepped into the ring.

Alot of you blokes have missed the point of this documentary and technique all together. The one inch punch is purely an example of “chi” and the damage that a minimal distance strike can do.

Its effectiveness in MMA and the fighting ability of the Martial Arts Movie stars is totally irrelevant and its idiotic to think that the one inch punch or any martial arts movie star work in MMA.

Just appreciate the technique for what it is. Why must so many people over analyze these things…

Brendan Says, in 3-27-2008 at 18:07:55 from 146.171.254.66

You need to expand your knowledge of the MMA world SMACK.

You will never see a lot of strikers in the UFC as the rules/cage aren’t set up for strikers but for wrestlers.Having what is nearly a round ring stops you from cutting off someone not looking to strike and the no kicks/knees to grounded opponents take away a lot of a strikers ground game.

Kickboxing/karate dominate stand up fighting like K-1 as this is what these martial arts are about as they teach only the basics in ground fighting. There is no better martial art than these two for power striking.

Tell that to GSP OR Chuck Liddell. You’re right about K-1 and Pride having more striking. Mostly because it is very hard to wrestle in a ring. Right now I see many fighters having a perfect mix of ground work and striking.
