GSP is nothing like Couture. Randy does damage on the ground. GSP does not EVER try to posture up and do damage, he just hugs and humps. I’d feel gay after 5 rounds with GSP.

Anderson Silva is a very big MW fighter. Not the biggest, but with an ideal frame for MW (or even LHW). GSP has an ideal frame for WW or LW, not realistically MW. Silva also packs incredible punch (HW punching power).

GSP hits very hard, but he doesn’t take risks in the way he throws strikes.

Being disciplined is a very important element of fighting. Timing and mental preparedness are also huge components.

GSP lacks creativity. He also has very little swagger during a fight.

GSP is the greatest champion ever in the second most competitive weight division, and a weight division with a previously record setting champion and hall of famer (Hughes).

In my view the hardest/deepest UFC divisions by ranking (relative to number of top 20 worldwide fighters in the division) are:

This all only makes sense. Jones and Silva wiped out their divisions in devastating fashion. Georges “whats the rush?” St. pierre hugs his opponents for 25 mins. This is ridiculous now although major props for shrugging the ring rust, adrenaline dump and of course overcoming a brutal injury but COME ONE MAN! Its always a hugfest.

Gsp v Silva just dont add up plus Diaz and Georges still have unfinished business to take care of. F*** weidmann, he is no where near qualified or talented to fight anderson.

Lets see fights that Anderson actually has competition in, not ones he knows hell win.

I just posted this comment in the Hendricks gif, but I think it responds pretty clearly to your question:

I think I’ve decided that I would actually be much more interested in the Silva vs. GSP superfight than I would in Silva vs. Jones. GSP is stylistically well primed for the fight, since he has possibly the most explosive takedowns of anyone in MMA with excellent top-control n guard-passing skills, which are all things that Silva has presented a weakness with in the past. GSP is also a more disciplined fighter than Chael Sonnen n seems much less likely to be caught by Silva’s triangle chokes, etc. He should look for a better way to open a closed guard than using the can-opener though, because the extra length n leverage that Silva will undoubtedly have would probably be tougher to shrug off than Carlos Condit’s. GSP is excellent at closing the distance with a takedown move, which means that he might be able to avoid clinch situations where Silva could KO him with devastating knees. The main thing he would need to avoid would be standing n trading with him. This little Russian roulette style game that Silva likes to play where he drops his hands n just waits for punches to counter is a game that GSP would almost certainly lose (like either the Griffin or Bonner fights). All in all, I like this match-up a lot.

Now, don’t get me wrong. If Silva fought Jonny Bones, I would be going bananas just like all of you, but I also consider it a fight that Silva would be very unlikely to win. Silva’s knees from in the clinch – easily his most devastating strike – would be near impossible to pull off against Bones, since he is both too tall n also among the very best Greco Roman wrestlers in the UFC. Silva’s punch n kick accuracy is another of his main strengths n likely the best chance he would have for winning, because since he greatly prefers to counterstrike than attack preemptively, he might be able to slip a punch or two, throw a couple strikes n return to the outside. That is not at all a safe bet, however, because Jones’ height n reach advantage mean that staying on the outside would leave him open to many more strikes than he would be able to return. He would have a punchers chance if he could stop it from going to the ground, but what seems most likely – not certain, but very likely – is that Bones would force a clinch situation, ragdoll him to the ground n then batter him with punches n elbows from guard, half-guard, and/or side-control.

I may still believe that Anderson Silva is the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, but that doesn’t mean he is invincible n the (mostly unspoken (at least in English)) reasons that he has for hesitating to fight Bones are legit. GSP vs. Silva, however, might be a truly awesome match-up.

I’m really interested to hear other people’s intelligible responses to the parts that extend beyond this conversations scope as well…
