UFC 151 Canceled – Dan Henderson Injured – Jon Jones vs Lyoto Machida 2 At UFC 152

An injury to Hendo has forced the cancellation of the whole UFC 151 event. Dana White said that when he found out about Henderson’s injury, former middleweight contender Chael Sonnen was offered the bout with Jones and accepted, but Jones refused to accept the fight.

The UFC president placed the blame for the fight cancellation on the champion Jones. Video of White announcing the death of UFC 151 after the jump.

“Chael Sonnen accepted the fight with Jon Jones last night,” White said. “At 8 or 9 last night the one thing I never thought would happen in a million years happen. Jon Jones said, I won’t fight Chael Sonnen on eight days notice. That has never happened either.”

There should be a fine for every fighter that gets injured so close to the event like this. Gyms should also internally fine or temporarily ban fighters who injure other fighters who have upcoming big bouts. Really there has to be something done about this whole injury bullshit. When I was doing amateur muay-thai league I always made sure I spar lightly in the last days before my event – but train with more intensity. The head of the gym was against it but I just said to myself F*** him and took care of myself.

I can understand why Dana is upset, but Jones made the right decision. Jones would have everything to lose, and nothing to gain by fighting Chael on a weeks notice. That fight needs its time to mold, let Chael trash talk for a month or two atleast…. And JJ is still fighting next month. Smart decision.

Smart or not smart. It is his duty to defend the belt, and really he has no excuse. If they are putting a fighter in front of him that can make the 205 pound limit, he doesn’t have a choice of who he fights or who he doesn’t. Whoever the UFC deems acceptable is who he should fight.
If anything they should have that as a clause in their contracts. You are telling me that if Dos Santos was able to make 205 pounds, Jones would have a choice of whether to fight or not?… then why not hand pick the rest of your opponents?!?

How on earth is Jon Jones to blame? If Jones won, big deal; he was supposed to win. If Jones lost, that would be the worst loss in history, at least in my mind. Textbook lose-lose situation. I certainly would have thought less of Jones (and Jackson) had he taken the fight. Sonnen certainly didn’t deserve the immediate title shot after his _embarrassing_ loss to Anderson Silva in which it appeared he simply gave up. Who cares if Sonnen was going to fight for free? Sonnen just didn’t deserve it. Giving him the title shot for running his mouth is going to turn this sport into the WWE, with every mediocre fighter now thinking they can “earn” a title shot by being a jerk. The fact that Sonnen was offered the title fight just for running his mouth seriously tarnishes the UFC’s reputation in my mind. It is this kind of move that is killing the sport that I love. It’s certainly the UFC’s fault for not having a worthy/better back up challenger waiting in the wings. Can’t they see that fighters (including the top fighters) get injured in training? How hard is it to tell Machida, Rua and/or Gustafsson to be ready to fight on Sept 1? The UFC needs to get in the habit of always having a proper backup plan. Again, if anyone is a sport killer in this situation, it’s the UFC itself for not having a proper backup plan. Mr. White simply is trying to deflect attention by blaming Jones. You don’t screw everyone else’s lives, especially the poorer fighters, just because. Sonnen isn’t a much different fighter than Hendo. It would be even an easier fight for Jones. Go there, finish him in a few seconds, go home with a big paycheck, and all the other fighters have money for food for a couple more months.

Look, I understand that itz a lose lose fighting sonnening and dont blame him for that,but if u wanna be the best and co.sidered the best ever(which he dose) u got to be willin to put ur personal feelingz aside and take one for the team so to speak. But what gets me is if u listen close to thiz interview, dana said that jon was unwilling to fight no matter who it was most likley because he did not have time to specificly train for that opponent(Im not judgong him for it, hes his own man and makes his own desicions) but he needs to.think that the way he became the champ is because the number one contender(reshard at the time was injured) what if.shogun said nope, I will not fight jon jones on such a short notice… I have plenty of more to go on about thiz but I will end it at that as im on,my phone and not even sure this will post lol

I never realized how much rides on the main events. Shogun fought JJ on short notice knowing he was an up and coming star. JJ should act in kind but the mentality is “I got mine, screw the rest of you.” Chael was not the first fighter approached, but he WAS the first fighter to step up. JJ should not duck Chael, most likely would beat him first round, no problems. The people and money that have been crushed by one dodger is amazing. Greg jackson is the AIDS of the UFC slowly taking the life out of the sport! UFC to Islam gotta love the comments!!!
