Take a look at Machida’s face and access the damage. Then take a look at Shogun’s face and access the damage. I think Shogun looks more damaged. This was a technical, good fight. Just because Machida got a little slowed down from some good kicks that made Machida back up a little. Shogun could not take Machida down one time, and he tried. Machida had some good flurrys and backed Shogun too. Just because some spoiled people always want to see a knockout does not mean a close fight was not a great fight. Machida is so humble, that he now feels he let the fans down because he did not close the battle with a knockout. I bet no other 205er can go 5 rounds with Shogun.
Give it up–Machida is still on top.

Rainbow you are out of your mind. Just because you back someone up with a flurry, doesnt mean you caused damage. Shogun connected with far more damaging kicks than MAchida connected with damaging ANYTHING. Shogun also pressed the action more than Machida for the entire fight. Even the president of the UFC believes that Shogun won the fight. It was a bad call.

It was a close fight. Could have went either way. I am really hoping for a rematch. These two are clearly the best 205ers by a long shot. I could see this being another Randy vs. Chuck style trilogy in the making.

Damage means nothing. If you want to talk about damage, Machida could barely walk after the fight. I bet Shogun could have went 4 or 5 more rounds, but there is no way Machida could last another round. Shogun broke Machida, next time Shogun will be more aggressive and the out come will be Shogun raising his hand in victory.

Shogun looked to have great cardio. Machida was looking pretty dead and round 5 but Shogun looked quite fresh. Funny that this is the guy who gassed against Coleman.

Shogun controlled the cage and pushed the pace of the fight. His gameplan made Machidas gameplan obsolete and useless. Shogun won this fight and pretty much the whole world believes he won minus three judges and some internet trolls. Machida can’t even answer the question of “do you think you won the fight?”. He just uses the judges as a scapegoat.

ive heard people blame shoguns corner saying that they were wrong for saying he was winning (in his corner). If they had rushed him to stalk machida or be more aggressive he could have played into machidas very dangerous counter striking game. SHogun could not overexert himself he stuck to a very disciplined strategy and won (not officially).

All of this ‘close fight’ talk is nonsense. Was it a mismatch? Of course not. But it was an EASY fight to call for anyone with their eyes open and a grade three level grasp of counting. Fightmetric has the stats. Look at strikes landed:

Round One: 19/11 Shogun (head shots, 2/1 Shogun; power head shots, 2/1 Shogun)

Round Two: 21/7 Shogun (head shots, 2/1 Machida; power head shots 2/0 Machida)

Round Three: 19/15 Shogun (head shots, 9/6 Machida; power head shots 5/5 draw)

Round Four: 10/3 Shogun (head shots, 1/1 draw; power head shots 1/0 Shogun)

Round Five: 13/6 Shogun (head shots, 7/1 Shogun; power head shots 4/0 Shogun)

Total: 82/42 Shogun (head shots, 17/14 Shogun; power head shots, 12/8 Shogun)

If you’re using the 10 point must system to scoring rounds, then, by total shots Shogun wins 50/45; just counting head shots it’s a 48/48 draw; just counting power head shots it’s 49/47 Shogun).

The only metric that Machida wins is body shots, and even that he takes by only 3 rounds to 2 with a 24/16 edge in strikes landed, compared to Shogun’s all out assault with the leg attacks, which he dominated for all 5 rounds, out striking Machida 49/4.

Sorry, but 82/42 is NOT a close fight, especially if the guy who lands the 82 is also the guy who lands more head shots and power shots. How do a few extra body shots all of a sudden balance out a dominant performance in leg attacks and a solid edge in strikes to the head?

And don’t even get me started on the ‘well Machida did more damage in the first three rounds’ garbage. If that’s true, why did Shogun control rounds 4 and 5 so easily? Did Machida gas out? Nope. He was just more beat up coming into round 4. How’d that happen? Did his corner men beat him up between rounds? Nope. Shogun beat him up somewhere between the starting bell and the end of round 3. Logic dictates that for Machida to be the more beat up fighter going into round 4, Shogun had to do more damage (aka WIN) in at least 1 of the first 3 rounds. Simply put, not a difficult decision to make; regardless of how you slice it, Shogun won that fight.

A close fight? LC, just by saying so you show how little you know aboat the sport. You will probably not understand the facts or scoring, but that sais it all – that Shogun won that bout in every aspect (exept for knees to the body).

You should feel stupid now, but if you did, you wouldn´t have made stat statement. So keep on thinking that it was a close fight, and be happy.

Watching Machida dominate sokodju, ortiz, thiago silva, stephan bonnar, bj penn (at diff weights), rich franklin, and rashad evans among others, I became a HUGE Machida fan. He appeared to be a champ among champs. Then he fought Shogun… what the hell? How did he do soooo poorly? Shogun almost lost against Coleman! I guess he stopped being hungry or something. I really think he lost three rounds to two, but I can see how the judges would’ve gone the other way. Rounds 1 2 and 3 were pretty even, and Shogun dominated 4 and 5. Judges must’ve erred in the champs favor for rounds 1 2 and 3.

I hope Shogun knocks him out the second time. If Shogun loses the rematch it’ll be a pity.

And don’t give me that “you gotta beat the champ to be the champ” bullshit. That’s just an idiotic rhyme that doesn’t mean shit. You’re always the judge that gives someone a 30-27 victory when it could NEVER have gone that way…and yes your expertise is “judging” or whatever, but you need to talk to some people man. Shogun won…I’ve watched the fight 3 times to try and reconsider, scored it myself, and all 3 times Shogun won. Arguable that he won 3 rounds to 2, but I say 4 rounds to 1. And to say that because Machida threw a flurry that landed 1 clean shot, should get a 10-8 round….and if you watch the replay the CLEANEST shot of the flurry was Shogun’s counter right hand at the end that staggered Machida into a clinch. Bunch of silliness.

Machida wins in unconvincing fashion and then comes back with a huge win…then again Shogun might just chop his legs clean off in the next fight.

It would be funny if Shogun actually would chop Machida’s legs off in the next fight and then have the judges STILL give the win to Machida…hilarious.

Shogun got hurt with a counter left knee in the 1st while he shot in for Machida’s legs.
Interesting how they quickly switched cameras as if they tried to avoid showing Shogun wincing and agonizing as he grabbed Machida’s legs and hung on. Why didn’t they replay it, it’s great highlight. It looked to me like he must have screamed out loud similar to the way Shane Mosely screamed when he was hit to the body by Vernon Forrest.
And Machida hit Shogun with that knee a few times.
The 1 single leg kick that changed the fight was the counter inside low kick which Shogun landed on Machida in round 3. Which had a lingering effect on Machida for the rest of the fight.
Rogain’s commentary was deceitful and manipulative. Many times Shogun and Machida landed simultaneously kicks but Rogain said “devastating kick by Shogun”. Many times Machida barely eluded Shogun’s kick just to have Rogain said “another kick by Shogun”, “Shogun is finding a home for that kick”.
The only rigging in this fight was in order to get more money from fans.
I could not decide a winner. I’d have to say draw. Therefore Machida keeps his belt.

I just watched it for the second time. It was a pretty good fight. Machida came out with his usual style but Shogun was very prepared for it. He had great timing with his kicks which made Machida hesitate to do his usual leap forward to strike. Shogun was also great at “chasing down” Machida and catching him with some kicks as he retreated. Machida also had some powerful knees to the body and punch combination. It seemed the Shogun was stunned and in real danger at the end of round 3.

I had the first and third round to be for Machida for sure and the fourth and fifth to Shogun. The second round was close. Going by rounds I give it to Machida. However, by overall damage, shogun devastated him with those leg/body kicks.

I’m a Machida fan but I’m glad there is someone that can challenge him like this. I have a feeling it will be very good for him. Can’t wait for the rematch.

I think alot of people lean towards Shogun because of the commentary. Rogan definately praised Shogun and was biased towards Shogun. Goldberg folled suit. Another reason is people have never even seen anyone ever actually hit Machida before, thus thinking Shogun deserved more just because of that. Bottom line is …yes the real Shogun is back and yes these are 2 of the best out there at 205. we are lucky as fans to get to see these phenomianlly talented and conditioned athletes compete at the highest level. my opinon of both of these fighters has gone up alot.

Machida had the clearly accurate head hits and body shots.

Shogun clearly had the accurate leg kicks no doubt.

Omg.. Is it any possibility for the UFC to change the result of a match afterwards??
Could´nt they change this crap to a draw or a no contest?? Seriously…

Machida wasn’t 100% he said so himself after they directly asked him in the post fight interview.
But even then every kick by Shogan was answered with a punch or kick by Machida. Clear victory.

i think, because the prediction before fight is 85% to machida dan 15 percent to shogun, all three judges put their money on machida. But the fact is shogun wins. rather than loosing money or their houses in this time of crisis, judges make shogun loose. it happen all the time. it’s human.

123- yeah shogun should be more aggressive….thats what machida wants an agressive fighter to fight him…..thats how machida takes out people..the aggressive ones…stupid…123 do even watch machidas fights? being agressive is one the most important things not to do with machida…one mistake and machida will make a small mistake and big one! war machida!!!

If the judges tell the truth, shogun wins, ufc, shogun & machida getting more rich. But the judges will loose a lot of money or their houses if they really bet.

The fight was very close and intitally the first time I watched it I thought Shogun won…but you really have to watch it with the volume off…most kicks Shogun performed he did a Thai kick and circled which means he missed the kick. Some of them hit Machida’s hand and arm. he did some damaging kicks but he didn’t land nearly as much as everyone is contesting him to have made. Plus Machida was shoving Shogun around easily as well as controlling the clinch…flurries and two punches that nearly knocked Shogun down. Shogun was not looking to finish and since he isn’t the champion just off that he shouldn’t deserve to win a decision off a champion that completely dismantled the prior champion (Rashad)

1)Crowds booing dont mean anything. Judges are trained to do what they do and therefore their opinion is most likely going to represent the average opinion of a person who watches it in slow mo. Fightmetric.com’s strike count is non-sense, most of shoguns strikes did nothing and Machida countered a lot more than you realize until you watch it over at least on mute.

2)Despite Machida looking damaged at the end of round 5, if he still won 1 2 3, then based on the system in place he still wins. And that’s essentially what happened. Also, why don’t you be fair and post the pictures of Ruas’ face in the post fight interview, one big bruise on side of his head and another under his eye.

3)Machida backing up doesnt mean Shogun has octagon control you stupid idiots. MACHIDA IS ALWAYS BACKING UP, that’s how he fights. And he did initiate more engagements than Shogun.

4)What did Shogun really do?Didn’t take him down, didnt submit him, or knock him out. Kicked his legs a few times, some body shots that we ASSUME damaged Machida. What did Machida do? THE SAME, NOTHING. So quit winning about the decicions and cooking up conspiracy theories about corrpution. Shogun did better than expected, and Machida worse, so by contrast it looks like something that it wasn’t.

That cecil guy said machida controlled the octogon cuz he was luring shogan in. I think we should stick a judge in an octagon against any muay thai guy and as he runs away from the kicks ask him if he thinks he controlling the octogan? And when he said leg kicks and body shots don’t finish fights, kick him in the leg a few times for 5 minutes and then make him walk around for 4 more rounds, the judges are too old fashioned to understand modern MMA. And personally I think as much of a fan of machida as I am I feel that he shouldn’t be able to say he won the fight with a straight face even if he wants to hide behind the judges decision. The fact is machida is on a 60 days suspension and probably won’t be 100 percent by jan 2nd while shogun looked like his recovery may not even need to be more than a little bit of surfing and sushi and a good nights rest.

hehe if theres a rematch shogun loses by ko. you guys think that shogun is so amazing but as a technical aspect machida will figure out his barbaric style. he just rushes forward with way awkward movement but machida’s going to figure it out. about the leg kicks and body kicks…. you can forget about that. not going to land again. so what can you expect.. shogun getting frustrated and forced to come in and get countered hard by machida. next fight machida 2nd round ko

just watch DREAM. you won’t know any of the fighters(unless you’re a true MMA fan and not just a UFC fanboy). so no whinning. great place to learn too. nothing but pure MMA. you’ll see some amazing stuff that has really been lost by cages and ground’n pound here in the U.S. and grow more appreciation. expand people

Man these Machida fanboys are funny. Machida is going to ko Shogun next fight? Based on what?

Shogun proved he was superior to Machida in every aspect as he took Lyoto’s game away from him.

The last two rounds Machida didn’t engage at all he was battered and his legs could barely hold himself up.

The third round every Machida fan wet themselves over was Shogun’s. Machida missed on almost every single strike that he threw in his desperate flurry and Shogun’s right at the end was the best strike of that exchange.

Shogun landed more than double the strikes and had Machida out of his rythm the entire fight.

I don’t know how anyone that watched that fight can think Machida is a better fighter than Shogun, let alone beat him.
