Thanks for getting this fight up so fast!
I like and appreciate the ground game but could see a large amount of holding and ‘lay and pray’ technique from gerald cos he didnt do much to capitalise after all his hard take down work. Which does make me glad to see Amir win as he showed good heart, strikes and worked well on the ground therefore an active fighter therefore good for MMA. BUT damn does he need to work on getting underhooks hahaha.

slams are overrated. they rarely do any damage and all they do is gas the guy doing the slamming. in the end all it usually is is a takedown and usually provides a better opportunity for the guy to bounce back up and get up.

I think its all about connection. Most of the guys on guys on the show are somehow tied to the coaches. I think one of the guys that lost in the first round was Rampage’s prodigy.
I have a friend who’s record is 9-1 or 10-1, can’t really remember.. who auditioned for the last season but wasn’t chosen and in my opinion could have been the winner of that season. It sucks to see great fighters go un-noticed.

I am sorry if I offend any TUF Loyalists out there, but don’t these “MMA” Fighters have to have a somewhat full circle game. Just because you roll around for three minutes does not mean it’s Ju-Jitsu. Wild Punches are not Thai or American Boxing, and what happened to hands up chin down? There good brawlers and the true Black Belt Ju-Jitsuist is the most well rounded fighter on the show. And he is a dick. Oh well can’t wait till Sat Night.

mygif_alt
LandownerNo Gravatar Says, in 5-15-2008 at 13:41:41 from 66.255.43.246

I don’t think it was an early stoppage at all. The ref gave him a warning and then when Garald still did not defend the ref stopped it. Sometimes the fighter knows the least about his situation. We don’t need someone getting needlessly hit while unconscious just so some can feel better about a loss. If you have little ones that depend on you a career as a fighter might not be the best choice.

mygif
mmafighter32No Gravatar Says, in 5-15-2008 at 13:56:30 from 75.75.161.241

if you watched the whole episode you can see that the guy was pissed off because he thought he let his family down, in debt, etc. Thats why he was screaming he wasnt out and even rampage told him that if he gets caught, he needs to do more than grab a guys leg (single leg) in order to prove that hes not out. If i was the ref i would have done the same thing…protect the fighters…esp this early in their career…

mygif_alt
Toxic_SocietyNo Gravatar Says, in 5-15-2008 at 15:21:00 from 68.12.248.117

Yeah, though he might not have been out, he should have done more to prove it. If he didn’t lose by KO, he lost by stupidity because he made it look like he was out by not defending.

And I’ve been saying since the first show, Amir is gunna be a good fighter. All he has to do is get some kind of ground game figured out… he had a perfect triangle opportunity, instead looked for a next-to-impossible armbar. Teach him some Jiu Jitsu and he’ll go far.

Plus, he’s fought Muay Thai, that’s how he’s on the show with an (0-0) record. He’s obviously good there. ha, my hat goes off to Amir.

mmaguyNo Gravatar Says, in 5-15-2008 at 15:39:36 from 76.92.138.29

I was at the Boston tryouts for the next season. I made it through the grappling and striking levels with flying colors, but apparently was not good enough in the interview. There were tons of SICK fighters there, I mean guys that look like they could take some of the top TUF champs. The best ones didn’t always advance through the tryouts, and some of the poorer ones did. There was really no correlation between skill level and advancement to the interview. It’s ALL about marketing: your charisma, how likely you’ll cause some drama, your story, your look, your nationality/race/sexual orientation/hometown for viewer demographics purposes, etc. It’s all about the show getting more viewers, which = more money. Rumor was in the tryouts they picked their top two or three guys they wanted to win and then the rest were cans that would be good for ratings. One guy that worked there said, “our trainers can teach anyone to fight, but we can’t make them look good on camera”.

mygif
Sunfish HeroNo Gravatar Says, in 5-15-2008 at 20:16:32 from 75.111.34.153

Gerald = Rashad Evans. All he does is shoot for the double leg, ALL DAY. Then gets to the ground, utilizes and incredibly slow ground and pound game and basically squeaks out a decision. I’m happy he lost, it’s really annoying to see fighters like that succeed, they don’t put it on the line. They fight not to lose. Now a days with Dana White firing the boring fighters (i.e. Lutter, Starnes, and O’brien) Gerald won’t last long in the organization anyway.

Props to Amir for not getting frustrated with the cowardly lay and pray tactics from Gerald. Gerald may have been awake and holding onto a leg, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t getting hit. He wasn’t defending his head and Amir landed several shots. Gerald should have done something about, though I think he was still dazed.

You cant take a knee to the chin, fall down at a weird angle and lay there not moving for 5 seconds while getting hit the the face…. The ref will stop the fight every time no matter if you’re out or not. And if you arent out, why just lay there not moving with your face on the ground.. whatever, I really like Amir, im glad he won

Wow! With all that is being said about the TUF tryouts, I wonder how many of the great fighters in the UFC who did not have the benefit of TUF would be rejected? (If they were trying to make it into the org., let’s say)

Fantasy TUF cast: Bas Rutten, BJ Penn, Tito Ortiz, Nick Diaz (I get high!), Mayhem Miller, Rampage, Don Frye, Joe Rogan, “The Gracie Hunter” (love to see him smoking and drinking before the big fight), and ring girl Gina Carano.

I’d watch that.

Maybe it was an early stoppage, maybe it wasn’t but the fight was fading fast for Gerald. You could see the beginning of the end when Amir was timing his shoots and sprawling effectively, while one-dimensional wrestlers do nothing but work for takedowns over and over again. That gasses you if you don’t set them up. The stoppage would’ve come sooner or later.

wow. the morons on this site who do NOT get in a cage continue to amaze me. “the ref stopped it too early” blah blah blah. he got hit in the chin with a KNEE and laid in the muslim praying position and just sat there. does a fighter need to be killed from too many shots to the head before you idiots realize that the refs are there to protect the fighter? if he’s doing NOTHING to defend himself, like for example blocking his head from being hit, then the ref will stop the fight. it’s even more annoying when a fighter can’t seem to realize that if you’re not defending properly, then it shall be stopped. oh, and TUF is for fighters to also progress that may not have world class training. so if they “suck” in your eyes, then you should’ve tried out for the show. just because someone doesn’t have any fights, doesn’t mean they’re not to get on a show to PROGRESS. ::shakes head:: it’s never fail to amuse me.

It was a good stoppage! When Gerald went down and Amir was punching him in the head the ref yelled out twice, YOU HAVE TO WORK! It means you cannot lay there and get belted in the head with punches! Gerald did not try to block those punches, he went on instinct and held on to Amir’s leg as he was getting punched. I’m glad the ref stopped it, Gerald is a good fighter and may have a career in the UFC. He can’t do that if he has brain damage. Gerald got up and was fine because it was stopped in time. When do you think it should have been stopped? When a Gerald goes into a coma? Or suffers a career ending concussion? Bunch of retards! Idiots! I don’t even know why I bother.

Even if it was a bad call I’m glad he lost. He’s a boring fighter that doesn’t belong in the UFC. It was so obvious what he was going to do, over and over.
