The word “da” (fem.) or “de” (masc.) means “of” or “belonging to”. “Da” Silva means someone or a descendant of someone owned by a Silva family. Until the end of slavery in 1888, slaves had only their given name (they only needed to be known in their residence). Once free they often chose their former owner’s family name.
According to the current rules, “da” is not part of the name and must be written in lowercase. Also Fabricio da Silva is Mr. Silva, not Mr. Da Silva.

Also useless question for Brazilians.There’s 2 guys fighting who’s name are Da Silva.But Wanderlei and Anderson are just Silva.Are Da Silva and Silva two different last name or they just cut out the “Da” for the racists in north America?

Doyle (you morron) afraid of the competition??

Why cater Brazil, because Brazilians were doing this long before it came to the US, because some of the biggest fighting academies are there, because they have a ton of talent there, because people are crazy about the sport there… Why would you be against it?!? The idea should be, the more (talent) the merrier. I want to see good shows, if the guy is talented I don’t care if he is from Kongo, Afghanistan, US or Brazil.

Very good names on this card, and a very solid BJJ world champion.

@Doyle Brunson: It’s probably because Brazilians were doing MMA/vale-tudo much earlier than the US and they created the UFC…, but that’s just me.

The truth is that fighting has always been a major interest in Brazil as well as in the Eastern countries. Americans mostly jumped on the wagon after Bruce Lee showed up. And before anyone think I am bashing anyone, I’m not. No hate at all for American fighters. It’s just a historical fact that the U.S. came later to play. although you can probably find a couple of earlier adventurers.
