Log in to Reply steamer April 14, 2013 that was dirty Log in to Reply MotherlessC**T April 14, 2013 When you see it from a certain angle some look bad but they where all to the side of the head. I’m sure some fans of Gabe will say they where illegal. Log in to Reply MotherlessC**T April 14, 2013 Phony outrage! Log in to Reply straightAhead April 14, 2013 The 3rd 4th and 5th elbows were all back of head. Log in to Reply Tempted April 14, 2013 All were legal except the last one, and it was after Gabe was already out. That shot hit him in the back of the head *because* the shot before it KO’d Gonzaga and his neck went limp, dropping into the path of the elbow. Log in to Reply Wellshitthebed! April 14, 2013 The last three were to the back but Gonzaga was out by the third one to the side of the head. Hope he’s ok, one looked like it caught him to the spine. OUCH! Log in to Reply Wellshitthebed! April 14, 2013 Sorry. Behind the neck, cervical vertebrae! Log in to Reply Tear April 14, 2013 There were 5 elbows, Gonzaga went out on the third. 1 and 2 were on the side of the head, 3,4 and 5 on the back. Should be a dq, unless better footage shows that number 3 was on the side of the head. Log in to Reply senatorLee April 14, 2013 only the last one was to the back of the head, but gonzaga was already done. legit Log in to Reply chilly5101 April 14, 2013 one was legal the rest were to back of head. I know ur in heat of moment but dang. boom I win. PAY Me. U GOT KNOCKED THE **** OUT. “bye illegal shit”! Interesting! IN THE NFL LIKE DANA WHITE LIKES TO COMPARE TO THERE SHOULD BE A FINE. Miss use of elbow or some shit anyone over 200 lb delivers power to knock u out there has to be some kind of control there by the athlete. Are we pros or not? That’s the difference in most states, no elbows as an amateur. Gonzaga looked like he was having tough time any ways, would have probably been same out come just later. that the heavy weight division u never know what ur going to get. Heavy Hitters Log in to Reply rockhead April 14, 2013 the last 3 elbows were on the back of the head from this angle. Log in to Reply Ref? April 14, 2013 The ref should be fired asap … Damn .. Gonzaga in a world of pain Log in to Reply AxeMurderer April 14, 2013 You have to be retarded not to see those last few shots were clearly the back of the skull, Log in to Reply Matt April 14, 2013 Of course those are legal shots. In order for those elbows to hit the back of the head, they would have to be downward elbows which are illegal themselves. He was hitting with the SIDE of his elbow- and from that angle could ONLY be hitting the SIDE of his head. DUHHHHH Log in to Reply GSUMMA April 14, 2013 Every ref is a little different when it comes to strikes around the back of the head, but most of them go with the “mohawk” rule. Strikes 1 and 2 were legal, 3 was definitely to the back but it is questionable only because we can’t tell if he Gonzaga reacted to the other two strikes and was A) already going out, or B) turning his head in some-what of a defense, at which point the illegal strike cannot be avoided. Log in to Reply mma made easy April 14, 2013 1 & 2 are okay, 3 seems to depend on the angle. 4 is riiiight to the sweet spot, after that it wouldn’t matter. 4 makes sure he stays down, but 3 is what drops him (and also what causes him to turn his head so that 4 landed in the bad spot) Comes down to analyzing 3, which, from some angles looks bad, and others, looks okay. Log in to Reply jsnwht April 14, 2013 The third shot was to the back of the head (or close enough to be illegal in my opinion), except it only hit there because Gonzaga turned his head last second. Only *intentional* shots to the back of the head are illegal. This was dirty but not dirty in an illegal way. It was just plain nasty. Gabriel got beat down. No ifs ands or buts. Log in to Reply Notagabefan April 14, 2013 All look dirty to me!,, Log in to Reply Notagabefan April 14, 2013 And he should be thrown out of the UFC for the last 3 death blows to the back of the head! Log in to Reply Twana April 14, 2013 DQ Log in to Reply Samoan Brasileiro April 14, 2013 just because he turned his head doesnt mean Hapa was aiming for the back of his head… he was aiming for the side its a fight there are rules but the ref got in there you cant say to DQ him because the last hit was towards the back of it and im a fan of both Log in to Reply firstname.lastname@example.org April 14, 2013 Bruno can you put the nonito donaire fight from last night? Bruno: Here you go. http://www.mmatko.com/nonito-donaire-vs-guillermo-rigondeaux-fight-video-wbo-boxing/ Log in to Reply vic77 April 14, 2013 No doubt…. some back of the head shots Log in to Reply Joe Dog April 14, 2013 Gonzaga could die from the many crushing blows to the back of his head. Geezus H. MF, that should be a DQ. Ref was out to lunch. Log in to Reply jimbobn April 14, 2013 5 elbows and then the ref jumped in on the 6th. The first two were legal, the 3rd is debatable(although I think its illegal) and the fourth clearly put him out which was 100% to the back of the head; as were the 5th and 6th. No contest! Log in to Reply Rage Machine April 14, 2013 They were all 12-6 elbows. Doesn’t matter where they land. A 12-6 elbow is a 12-6 elbow which is illegal Log in to Reply AOPrinciple April 14, 2013 I agree with the majority of commentors, here. 1&2 were legal, but 3-5 were pretty clearly illegal, if you ask me. Log in to Reply White tiger April 14, 2013 Im seeing 6 shots, last two to back of the head, shot 3 put him out. For shot 4 his colapased face rotates on browns leg causing the next shots to hit the back of his head. Also, it has been explained before that back of the head really is not the complete back, but the base of the spine –only the last shot, which is a half shot, hits close to the base. If ufc refs keep to this, there shouldn’t be a dq. Log in to Reply KungFuLowKick April 14, 2013 @Tempted Rewatch the fight.Even if you are very tolerant of shots to the back of the head, the last 2-3 were illegal. One one the base of the neck and 2 behind the head. Log in to Reply KungFuLowKick April 14, 2013 @Matt Only 2 hit the side of the head.Even if you don’t throw a 12-6 you can still hit behind the head DUUHHHHH. Log in to Reply str8jkt April 14, 2013 I only saw that #4 might have been to the back of the head. Gotta have trust in the referee and what he sees. Log in to Reply EightLimbedSoldiier April 14, 2013 Listen. Stop being winers. Trav won. Elbows. They happen. Whether it was intentional or not, which most likely it wasnt, he got his hand raised. No one wants to boo or criticize when A. Silva wants to be a dick and run around the ring and hmiliate a fighter i.e. Damian Maia. So stop being a bunch of loose lips and suck it up. Log in to Reply keyboardcowboy April 14, 2013 how do you know for sure? he might have switched angles on the last couple to hit the other side. isnt the rule that you have to touch an ear, or something like that? i saw ears touched, even if by a tricep and not the elbow itself. point is…we dont know. ref knows. Log in to Reply KouNTa KuLCHa April 14, 2013 What are you guys smokin’?!!? SIX (6) elbows were thrown. White tiger is right, the last two were to the back of the head..AFTER he was already out. Watch it again…after the FIRST elbow, he gets the wobbly legs. Slow call by the ref, but the right fighter won. Your disqualification arguments are disqualified. ☺ Log in to Reply Matt April 14, 2013 @ KungFuLowKick Don’t say DUUHHHH to me!!! Or I will say DUUUHHHH back, except twice as long!! DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Log in to Reply MMAgiantsilva April 14, 2013 3-4 illegal strikes for sure. Log in to Reply 123 April 14, 2013 12 to 6 elbows are illegal, should have been disqualified. No since in crying over it now, Travis Browne got the win. There has been plenty of finishes that are illegal but the ref does not see it… Log in to Reply Matt April 14, 2013 The last two elbows that everyone is calling downward elbows couldn’t be more false. The last two are forearm strikes to the opposite side of the head. Look at the way he is throwing it. The first few are elbows to the ear, only ONE of those strikes may have been close to the back of the head. The last two he transitions to forearm strikes- which at that angle, appear to be 2 to 6 elbows (which are illegal, and there is no way that’s what happened) Log in to Reply boonching April 14, 2013 I think a few more elbows and Gonzaga just might’ve shit himself. that was brutal Log in to Reply Not anonymous April 14, 2013 The bigger question is : When will the athletic commissions ban elbows entirely, and legalize knees to a downed opponent’s head? Knees on the ground would allows dominant wrestlers to end the fight instead of just spinning from position to position on a “turtled” opponent. Elbows end fights occasionally, but half of those stoppages are, at the least, questionable in their legality. A proper knee to the head will probably break the turtle’s hand, and we wont have to deal with all of this stalling…. Log in to Reply FailSonnen April 14, 2013 6 elbows were thrown First two elbows to the side of the head made him wobbly GONZAGA went out on the THIRD elbow which was to the side of the head Elbows 4,5 and 6 were all to the back of the head because Gonzaga went out and became limp and the REF RUSHED IN TOO LATE. Log in to Reply Joe Dog April 14, 2013 This is not much different than if your opponent is out cold on the mat and you soccer kick him in the head…2 or three times! DQ or NC. Ref was out to lunch. Log in to Reply thephoenixneverdies April 15, 2013 @ FailSonnen thanks for saving me time and having to type my opinion cause you nailed it bro, anyone who does not agree with FS’s comments are in denial..simple. Log in to Reply KungFuLowKick April 15, 2013 @Not anonymous Elbows should never be illegal. In the last couple of years we saw elbows in MMA are not just used to cut people and ruin fights. They can knock people out standing up(Weidman,Marquardt),in the clinch(Nick Denis)and on the ground(Jones).Banning all those possibilities would just bring the sport backwards imo.But I agree with the knees on the ground. And 12-6 elbows should always be legal. They don’t even do as much damage as most elbow strikes that are legal anyways. Log in to Reply KungFuLowKick April 15, 2013 And I only took my examples from the UFC.There’s also probably a million hours of Muay Thai footage where we see elbows are not just used to cut. Log in to Reply jonnyx April 15, 2013 1&2 looked kind of legal, 3-5 were clearly illegal. the funny thing is they look a lot more like downward elbows on the close up. and to the people that are saying “trust the ref” etc….pleeease thats why we have instant replay in other sports….the refs are human and definitely make mistakes. Log in to Reply ETK April 16, 2013 To me, it looks like Travis Browne was negligent and abusive of the rules. Because Travis Browne does not have the capabilities to throw elbows like that with precision and control, ensuring the elbows land fairly and avoid prohibited areas.
