I have been to a few Karate tournaments and occasionally the refs will get mad at the fighters for not listening, but this guy takes it too far.

Damn! Do they wear mouth guards at karate tourneys? If not, I’d say that kick definitely broke teeth and perhaps his nose. In fact, there’s a good chance it did regardless of the mouthguard.
What a prick! I understand the strike to behind the ear to knock the guy down and end the hostilities. But if every time things got a little to heated at a martial arts tourney the ref got to kick people in the face there would be a lot of toothless, disfigured karate practitioners walking around.

That was not a push that knocked the guy down and it was not a pressure point that put him down if you look carefully he headbutts him right to the temple and as far as im concerned that should have been enough to end the conflict that ref was completely out of line and if that was my teamate i would make sure me and a couple other hard guys where waiting for that ref in the parking lot.

That was one of the cheapest things I’ve ever seen! Wish I had been at that event – that ref would have trouble forming a sentence for the rest of his life!! Cowards like that need to be dealt with.

Watching it again, it does look like a head-butt brought blue down, Kung Fu. Good call. I agree Blue guy probably deserved that much. White guy turned off his offense and went pure defense after the “stop” from the ref. Blue, however, kept on the offense even after 3 calls from the ref to stop. White responded to blue with a warning shot… not an offensive attack (he purposefully missed as if he was just say “Hey, you’re pissing me off.”). Can’t really blame White for being pissed.

Blue was being a complete asshole. The ref responded in kind. The kicks were way overboard… but I guarantee you blue will never try to illegally continue striking in another tournament (if he ever gets out of the hospital).

I know a couple in real life there the worse.
You know the ones who think Bruce Lee could actually win a fight over an mma fighter.
The ones who think UFC is all about who’s bigger and the guys have no technique.
God ,watching these karate people fight,it looks HORRIBLE, their hands fall down, NO head movement, hardly any circling. Karate just plain sucks for real fighting and MMA, and Lyoto Machida is the only one who can kind of use it. But he also trained in a shit load of muay thai and jiu jitsu. I’m willing to bet he does hardly ANY karate anymore and focuses solely on MMA applicable styles.

That was completely uncalled for. Everyone who says the guy in blue deserved it needs to look again. The ref called a stop to the action and the guy in white took a cheap shot, one last jab and then tried to walk away like nothing happened. The boy in blue had a right to be pissed.

The ref… WTF? I have to imagine that he knows the guy in white or is related to him some how cuz if not he’s just plain nuts and needs to be banned. Hell he should be banned anyway. But again, got to come to the aid of the boy in blue folks.

Watch the video again. It’s the guy in white that throws a cheap shot before the guy in blue tries to return the favor… and of course gets cheap shotted by the pussy ref.

Listen! This is very weird, but I was actually at that tournament in Shanghai. The ref was applauded for his efforts which ended Blue Gi’s regime of tyranny. There was a parade, countdown, and party time…referee style. And if you haven’t been to a referee party, you have not lived!

I’ve read about this in a karate forum before, it happened in mexico about 8 years ago and the ref is called isao nakamura. He’s supposed to be a 7th dan black belt instructor at a university. the match was soft contact ‘kumite’ (like the song in bloodsport) between a karate pupil of nakamuras and a kung fu student who was a bit tasty.

Its funny to read the arguements on the karate forums most of the people argue about how he’s forgotten ‘perfection of character’ and how disgraceful it is but even the most zen black belt million dan masters can’t help but admire the headbutt from behind and soccer kick to a downed 17 year old kid!

IN hockey, this is a marty McSorley/ Bertuzzi or a Gary Suter type of move. If you can’t beat the guy legally, the coach finds someone who will do the trick. It’s rare that the coach actually takes the enemy out himself….

The ref was justified. If this is a true martial arts style then the ref was probably Renshi or higher with over 30 years of experience. People forget in the old days when the way of Budo was strong you would have been killed on the spot for showing the insolence and poor sportsmanship the fighter exhibited. Always listen to your superiors in this case also a referree.
