With the way PRIDE was handled, you have to take anyone who fought there’s records with a grain of salt. In order to really validify anyone in PRIDE, you have to see how they perform outside of PRIDE first. Gomi has always blown chunks out of PRIDE. He was probably just a product of PRIDE screwing over everyone he fought with various stipulations (shit like changing the weight class you’re fighting in 2 days before the fight, bribes, etc).

Same with vanderali siva, and Fedor come 24th jan.

I can´t believe that he loses this 2 last fights..
In PRIDE times this will never happen..

That’s what can be expected of the outcome when the title shot was given to a Gomi coming off a loss. You have one level of competition, lose, and are expected to beat a higher level of competition immediately after?

Nick Diaz d/ Takanori Gomi via gogo plata. Never the same after.

Gomi only lost 2 times outside of Pride, to BJ and hansen how does that suck? Its no secret that Gomi has never taken his training take seriously and his sub defense is the weakest part of his game.

Wanderlei got KOed in Pride too, what has changed? Chuck, Randy, Hughes, and Franklin, all stars from the UFC/Pride era. Whats your why conspiracy for why these guys are not on top any more.

Gomi got caught, i thougt he actually looked like he wanted to fight and looked sharp shrugging off couple tkd’s but plain and simple Kitoaka is grappling/sub STUD…anyone would have a hard time with him i think.

I agree with crazyhorn01. Gomi tried to fight that ankle lock for a long time. I think Gomi shouldn’t have engaged Kitaoka on the ground at all. Gomi did a beautiful takedown and tried for the rear naked choke almost immediately but I think Satoru is just in another place as far as grappling goes. Gomi’s always had a decent ground game, but when you’re facing a submission specialist that wears the same kind of grip pants as Aoki I would hesitate to engage on the ground. Especially with Gomi’s wrestling knowledge. He could have snubbed takedown attempts all night, but it looked like Takanori came to fight and he looked really hungry.

Hey Black Gerbil 1 keep in mind Pride was bought out just over a year ago, prior to that it lasted nearly ten years and was the worlds top mma organization.

No one stops to think that the fighters that fought then may have already had their best years, ie Wanderlei Silva and Antonio Noguiera, Cro Cop to name a few. That in itself doesn’t mean that Pride was a propped up organization, that’s utter nonsense.

The seemingly invincible Chuck Lidell has obviously become mortal, why? Because his time is up, he’s had his run and someone younger and quicker will take over. Does this fact mean the UFC didn’t have or wasn’t competitive a few years ago, I think not.

What a lot of UFC nuthuggers don’t seem to want to acknowledge is that guys like Wandy had already been on the down slide before coming into the UFC. Before entering the octagon against Lidell, Wandy lost something like 3 of his previous 5 fighst and 2 of them were lights out ko’s. A few of his decision wins if I remember correctly were split decisions, so he wasn’t lighting people up in the past few years. Now he comes into the UFC and everyone pretends like the UFC has brought him down. It was nothing more than time catching up to him, it doesn’t take away from the great achievements he made in the ring.

Guys like Quinton Jackson, Anderson Silva and I’m positive we’ll eventually see Shogun Rua(only 26 years old) rule the LHW division of the UFC haven’t had as many miles put on them when in Pride.

As for Fedor goes there’s nothing to say about him other than he’s the worlds best until proven otherwise. He’s done nothing but beat all comers, he utterly destroyed Noguiera more than once and this was when Big Nog was considered unbeatable. He beat Cro Cop when he was at the top of his game, not at the end. There are other guys that fought in Pride that I feel are still capable of beating anyone in the world today such as Josh Barnett.

I think Josh Barnett would be Fedor’s biggest test now, I imagine barring the unforeseen, this will probably be Fedor’s next fight.

R Says, in 1-4-2009 at 15:40:08 from 71.104.159.155

I hope Fedor vs. Barnett is next, that fight should have already been put together. Instead Affliction gives him Sylvia and Arlovski first, when Barnett is clearly superior to either of them.

Niv Says, in 1-4-2009 at 17:48:34 from 70.68.183.85

jiasjd, how does this prove UFC was better than Pride?

Is Kitaoka a UFC fighter? How does losing a fight in another organization mean that Pride was not a top organization?

This result actually proves my above point more than yours. There’s only so many good years one can have in mma before losses start to pile up. How many title defences are the record in the UFC? I believe 5 title defences is the record, that’s not a lot.

Gomi was a dominant fighter in Pride for years, just as Wandy and Big Nog were. Fedor apparently seems to be the only guy immune here, he just keeps on truckin’ and no matter how good he is, he’s destined to eventually lose. That will never take away the fact he’s the best ever at this point.

Either way this sport will always have a high attrition rate and the best will only be the best for a relative short time, with very few exceptions.

I dont get all this pride bashing, ufc’s superior. Pride is no longer and it seems that Dana F*** u Whites got everyone brain washed. Their were better fights, less rules and killer ko’s in the pride days so get your shit straight before you start yapping nonsense about how great the ufc is, and how dana made this sport. This sport was started not by a bitch name dana, which is a bitches name by the way but before Christ in the coliseums in Rome and possibly even before that.Dana just made it main stream in the US on spike and now everyone is a f***** expert on fighting thanks to the internet. Blackgerbil stop being a dummy for the sake of entertaining us lol.

when Gomi was at his “best” who else was, in pride? during its reign?

Crocop, Fedor, Shogun, Nog, etc etc.

during the SAME TIME PERIOD, IN THE UFC… who was on top?

Franklin, Hughes, Sherk, Liddell, Sylvia…..

Now, do you contribute the fall of all 5 of those guys to PRIDE BEING EXPOSED??? LMAO how the hell do you explain it then?

Not to mention that half of those guys were dethroned by PRIDE FIGHTERS…. and not tomention that some of the fighters who went from the UFC to post-pride organizations with basically the same roster, didnt do too much!

Here’s a more intelligent answer: After a few years of being at the top, eventually everyone slows down and makes room for new blood. Thats how it goes. Do you want fedor to be 6o years old, getting KO’ed by soem guy who isint even born yet, so you can run around the nursing home yelling “fedor was exposed?” lmao

use your brain. long live MMA

Niv, time to be schooled. Wanderlei is 1 and 5 in the UFC. He was defeated by Vitor Belfort and Tito Ortiz before he made his name as the axe murderer in Japan. And it’s kinda funny you mention Chuck because he was a man who simply found a sweet spot. Gomi is Japans Chuck. Niv, it appears we agree on Fedor though to a point. If AA beats him I will kill someone. Not myself cuz I love me. But know this…Pride was built on UFC drop outs, including Wandy and the only people who will argue that are those who don’t know the whole story. No disaspec dude but seriously….study the tape. I don’t doubt that AA will be Fedors biggest challenge but like I said he will win.
Unless this fight turns out like the rest of the fights lately and AA KOs Fedor in like 10 sec. But you can bet on this, New Years is over, and so are the flukes, Fedor will own.

Stop thinking it’s because he was overrated, it’s because he’s past his prime. Was Hughes overrated? Was Chuck overrated? Was Cro Cop overrated? Was Big Nog overrated? C’mon people, it doesn’t mean that he always sucked, at one point he was the best, but he’s past his prime and all these new up and comers are taking the place of the old. What you think Anderson Silva will be the best MW forever? I doubt it. People thought Franklin was the best MW ever until Silva came and totally trashed him. Get over it people, he’s past his prime. You’ve always been saying he’s overrated when he was winning, and now that he’s losing you try to validate your past opinions by pointing it out.

Steamer Bean I don’t agree at all that Pride was built up on UFC washouts. I saw the fight between Tito and Wandy and yeah he lost, but it wasn’t one sided and it was a tough fight. I believe in the second round Tito was lucky he managed to literally run away from Wandy when he was hurt. Vitor beat him as well and I have to say that I think that was a quick stoppage but that doesn’t really matter either, that’s what this sport is, you win some you lose some.

Wandy leaves for Japan, gets his shit straight and goes on a tear for what almost 6 years? I don’t give a crap who you are, a 22 fight win streak in MMA is unbelievable and with wins over guys at the top of their game like Sakuraba and Rampage.

Now here’s some schooling for you, you seem to forget that when Pride was the Big Dog the UFC would lend fighters to attend Pride tournaments. At that time the UFC had nothing to lose and everything to gain by sending big name fighters to Pride. The same Vitor Belfort you mentioned was loaned by the UFC and lost to Alistar Overeem, and of course Lidell was sent over in another tournament and lost to Rampage. These fights were when these guys were both top fighters still, especially Lidell.

There’s other factors to take into account as well when looking at a fighter like Wandy, he was a Vale Tudo Champ at the age of 21. He was raised fighting in bare knuckle events that allowed almost anything including headbutts, and fights went on forever until guys were almost dead. In Pride they allowed almost everything without groin strikes and headbutts, the UFC on the other hand has far more restrictive rules. This is probably his biggest problem, it’s fighting under these rules that affect how he fights. Remember that styles make fights, and so do styles fighting under different rules.

It’s conceivable that certain fighters styles will thrive in different environments and the all out brawling rules of Pride served fighters like Wandy better than UFC rules.

Using Wandy as your single source to say that Pride was built on washed up UFC fighters is ridiculous. Josh Barnett came to Pride after ko’ing Randy Couture, Big Nog ruled for several years until Fedor showed up. Cro Cop was top rate when he fought there, Heath Herring was a top ten fighter easy back then. Nevertheless there were too many fighters at the top of their game to even remember.

zzz makes and excellent point, but I still want to point out of all the fighters he named Wanderlei got beat twice in UFC, went to Japan, pounded a few cans, an untrained Quinton Jackson (who later came back and KO’d his ass), a Hendo who was like half his size and later came back and KO’d his ass, lost to Mark Hunt, got KO’d by Cro Cop, came back to UFC, to lose to Chuck and Rampage and KO’d Keith Jardine making his UFC record 1 and 4. Other than roids, what was so special about this guy again? He KO’d Sakurabu, but that dude had it comin, any decent fighter would have taken care of him. Don’t get me wrong, I loved watchin the fights and I try to give credit where credit is due, but all this “Wandy is a beast” stuff needs to go. The dude hit a sweet spot and an organization in need of stars capitalized on it. And yes, before anyone calls me out, the UFC has done the same thing more than once. But, Wanderlei received a lot of hype for not a lot of valid wins IMHO. He lost to f***** Tito for gods sake. Before anyone says yeah but he would destroy him now, I’m not sold til I see it.
