Strikeforce Axes Heavyweight Division Following Grand Prix Finals

Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier will fight in the Strikeforce Grand Prix finals and the winner will fight one more time against a “top heavyweight contender.” After that the plug will be pulled on the Strikeforce heavyweight division.


UFC President Dana White made this comment on the Strikeforce And Showtime Sports conference call earlier today.
“We’ll be doing 6-8 events a year and we’ll be focusing on key weight-classes and the women’s division. We’ll focus on the weight divisions that are strong. The heavyweight division isn’t deep enough so we’ll do away with the Strikeforce heavyweight division. The women’s division is very popular and we’re gonna keep it.”

Hmmm…on the surface it may seem like a bum thing to do on Dana’s behalf, but after thinking about it, it starts to make sense. The Strikeforce HW division really only has like 10 fighters, so it was inevitable that it would fold. However, I am super-glad that he’s decided to keep the Women’s divisions.

Melendez’s dream was to make it to the UFC after this weekends fight. It’s his last contracted fight with SF and now their telling him “sorry, but without you strikeforce is balls up”. I don’t know about any of you, but being the last rat on a sinking organization would scare the hell out of me. The man is now stuck looking through the glass from the kiddie pool and no hope in the deep end where he belongs. Sad day for many of lightweights that thought it was there turn to get called up.

And you are complete idiots if you think Dana made this happen. Strike Force was hemorrhaging money before Zuffa bought it and cut the crap. It would have COMPLETELY DIED had they not bought it. Just some Zuffa haters that or too moronic to see anything other than Dana’s face and run and hide.

Well this is a smart move to be honest, theres what 3 decent heavyweights in strikeforce and Barnett isnt one of them.

You can hear the loud gulping sounds as the UFC swallows up Strikeforce, heavyweights first. Odd, its seem that just a short while ago, Strikeforce had what was considered a very serious group of HWs. Can Barnett get a UFC contract? The imagination wanders…Bigfoot vs Nelson. Barnett vs Mir. I’m just happy that Strikeforce is still going to be around!! The HW’s in Stikeforce were about to recycle the 6-8 HW’s left. I hope they all go to the UFC.The UFC HW’s are a small group aswell. This should be good!
