The refs in the UFC are idiots. The reason they stand them up, is because the casual american fan wants to see them bang, and ratings would drop. I agree with rogan, nothing should be stood up. If you wanna stand up, find a way to stand up on your own. Striking is not the strength of MMA fighters, they would get lit up against any true striker. How many world class strikers are in MMA? a few. How many world class grapplers? many. This is what separates us from the other combat sports, the ground, respect it. aoki had him in much more trouble many more times.

Shinya just put a fucking rubber guard (jiu jitsu for MMA) Clinic! A lot of props for Calvacante for getting out of some nasty shoulder scuff breaking submissions.
In a REAL fight you could do just what Aoki did and wait for the mother fucker to come towards you, he’d be fucked.
Shinya Aoki is the man, best Jiu Jitsu in MMA, and he’s got to thank Eddie Bravo for that. 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu

Aoki fought a great fight, he controlled the majority of the fight with a lot more attemptz to finish the fight. I think the judging was fair, and JZ fought a dumb fight, he should have stood aoki up instead of keep engaging him on the ground

Aoki is the man. JZ had no real definitive offense in the entire fight except when Aoki was about to get that ankle lock. The reactions of the fighters at the end of the fight showed exactly who won.

wtf is wrong with yal, if you want stand up, go watch k-1 or muay thai fights. MMA’s main difference with other sports is grappling, aka the ground. so if you dont like watching ground fights, go watch some boxing or kickboxing. and besides, JJ is the best thing to have in MMA ever since the gracie’s pioneered it.

Is it just me, or does it look like JZ tapped once or twice at 17:38-40 in the video? Also, this should have been a semifinal match. They should have put Calvancante against someone he could just pound the crap out of in the first round, because then the boxing fanimals would have had something to beat off to. Aoki is a monster on the ground, but the UFC mentioners have a point that this match would have likely ended differently there, as most of the tangles would have been stopped early and stood up.

MMA is not meant to be fought in a ring. I mean really, fighters can really fall out and hurt themselves. Sure they hire like 50 ring jockeys to smack your hands and push you off the ring but seriously rings are meant for stand up fighting. Could you imagine a fighter trying to shoot for a double leg takedown and end up diving through the gaps in the ring? Oh btw, Aoki won the fight, he knew he couldn’t stand up with JZ so made him fight his fight. Good move.

Yeah… really great implementation of the Rubber Guard from Aoki. Its good to see Eddie Bravos philosophy put into practice in MMA.
JZ did fight a silly fight… shouldve stood that shit up when Aoki was in his shell rather than going for the big bomb. But Yes… Aoki is probably the most entertaining grappler in MMA today.

Since this is in fact a ring, it would make more sense to stand the fighters up. If you like striking and hate grappling go watch K1. If you like grappling and hate striking go watch ADCC. What makes MMA so exciting is the fact that it can go anywhere, on the feet or on the ground. A lot of you here seem to like one and have no interest in the other.
Great fight, Aoki was in control for almost the entire time. He made Calvancante fight his fight. JZ was either chasing him down or in his guard.

i agree Aoki won by unanimous decision. JZ just didn’t look as sharp as he did in their last bout. He needed to stand Aoki up instead of trying to pass his guard on the ground. Aoki’s bjj is far too superior and he knew that coming in.
