Thats what makes Aoki arguably the most overrated fighter in ALL of MMA.Dont get me wrong his BJJ is world class and is a top 3 ground practioner BUT that doesnt make you a good fighter. On another note Hayato did what he had 2 and this was a perfect match up for Mach and he proved every statement i made.

Csari0 Says, in 4-5-2009 at 12:34:48 from 99.226.208.134

YES!!!… this shows you why BJJ is so successful in the UFC… The UFC rules cater to wrestlers, BJJ… when the match hits the ground the options are limited.. favoring the gappler.

If knees were allowed in the UFC BJJ wouldn’t be so successful as it is now. I don’t want to hear that “protecting the fighter” BS, if knees were allowed in the US we would be spared 15 minutes of LnP.

I don’t see Shinya being carried out in a stretcher, suffering a head injury, or bleeding profusely like some fighters do from ineffective elbows, that only cut the fighters.

MUAY THAI SPECIALIST: He is not overrated, he has beating many quality opponents.. strikers too. I believe had Shinya if had been fighting someone else he would have won. Many fighters panic when they are on the mat with a grappling specialist. So I give more credit to Mach, than bash Shinya. You can’t win them all. Welcome to MMA, MTS

Exactly CSari, knees are a great tool for a striker while on the ground and fighters dont get to use it from side control, which would make alot of fights end differently.

def allow knees in the ufc, would make the fights more like real fights.

Csari0 is right on about why the UFC favors grapples and wrestlers.

Originally the UFC was created to see who the best fighter is not who the best grappler is.

Mach is the man if you didnt know now you do

mygif
deathblade Says, in 4-5-2009 at 16:25:56 from 198.53.12.179

The UFC favors grapplers. Ya right. Knees are vicous but so are elbows. The only reason that they are not allowed in Japan is that the Japanese fans do not like blood. The UFC should allow knees and kicks to grounded opponents but research has shown that the body heals from split faces faster than recovering from repeated blunt force. ie boxers with brain damage. At least if you get split open the DR. can stop the fight.

Aoki is a formidable submission artist no doubt! but severely too 1 dimensional, and sooner or later it would come out; although it was evident in even some of his earlier performances. The guy gets treated like royalty even though he’s still somewhat unproven; and is even allowed that minute advantage of wearing those long pants(to soak up opponent sweat to secure sub’s) He sure met more than his match in the always dangerous and complete Sakurai; a real master of the rubber guard!

csari0 you bring up interesting points in reference to “elbows” and over-all better fights. ufc is wrong on so many levels; the thing now is where to begin? Elbow’s are a dangerous nuisance that seldom result in KO’s but instead produce nasty, blinding cuts almost exclusively ending in premature stoppages and TKO’s at best. IMO PrideFC had achieved the best; most inclusive, conducive fighting environment thus-far. In the only area they could of improved is in allowing elbows? but when fighters are “standing-only!” Have you noticed how the ufc has severely castrated MMA here in the US? along with their former boxing cronies: Ratner, White & commissions; implementing their ridiculous bias and jargon on MMA! “unified rules” & “10point must system” (sounds like boxing anyone?) just tricks & scams designed at blocking foreign participation and creating more stand-up encounters to appease a non-discerning public. All under the guise of safety? if safety was the real issue? why not ban elbows? from all the ChuteBoxe fighter stomps & kicks in Pride; when was there ever a cut that resembled Guillard vs Neer? NEVER.

ufc is NOT MMA!

Wow, Aoki didn’t last long on that one. I’m hate to see him go out like that. Guess lightweight is where he truly belongs. You know I hear a lot about this not being good at everything will get you beaten eventually. I agree with that. Aoki has such good ground skills that he is better that a decent striker and grappler. Just about everyone has a base art, but when that art is wrestling it seems to be forgiven easier that Aoki’s Judo and BJJ skills. I’d be willing to give up punching all together if I could be as good at the ground game as Aoki is. That being said, yes he could use some work on his striking, but who’s to say he isn’t. His bread and butter is his ground game, so he may be hesitant to go too striking for fear of what just happened in that fight.

Mag Says, in 4-5-2009 at 21:15:37 from 203.34.63.1

The UFC definately favours wrestlers. BJJ guys not so much, but strikers have it the hardest. BJJ guys cant upkick from the guard unless the opponent is standing, which is rediculous. And strikers and BJJ guys cant knee a wrestler when they sprawl on them. If they could, the wrestler would be forced to roll to his back and then the BJJ guy could pass. Also the good BJJ guy could also use knees from side control to set up other subs. Other rules like the 10 point must and the fact that unless you are on top you are going to lose the round make the UFC severely unbalanced favouring mainly wrestlers. Its no coincidence that the USA have the main product of wrestlers also… Japanese MMA rules are SO MUCH BETTER – and FAIRER!

Lol owned, Aoki needs to learn to strike, UFC needs to allow knees on the ground. Look at these japanese promotions, the guys take all these knees on the ground and keep fighting on. In the UFC a little knee to the face and the fighter starts faking like a little hoe. Look at Varner vs. Cerrone. WTF! He took all those shots the whole fight and one little knee on the ground and he’s like im blind!!! If the knee was with him on his feet he wouldn’t have said shit. American rules are so BS especially when fighters exploit it.

are you serious?

How many knees does a does a fighter take compared to punches a boxer takes through out their careers? Do the math. How many knees did Shinya take? Compare that to punches a boxer gets through out a fight.

Japanese people don’t like blood?… you mean to tell me that every time a fighter got cut the fight would be called because there is blood? Yeah right. Even without elbows PRIDE had bloody matches. Unlike the US, in Japan the rules were actually made by fighters, not pencil pushers/promoters. I’m sure they realized that elbows are effective, but their effectiveness is limited mostly to cuts.

To the person that mentioned Royce Gracie… how many people did he choke with a gi? How many wrestlers were not allowed to kick just because they were wearing wrestling shoes, also there was no standing up fighters if there was no action… Oh yeah… what happened to Gracie when he went to Japan? you better find out.

Like I said all this “protecting fighter” is BS. Scar tissue does more damage to a fighters career even with plastic surgery.

Sakurai is great fighter, he had have some bad fights after he comeback. the second loose against sakurai for aoki after a lot of time for the rematch, this was clearly not a easy fight for aoki. the same as Aoki, Sakurai is a great submission wrestler with the difference that sakurai put emphasis on the ground and pound and aoki to the submission. aoki is a snake but he really need to improve at least his ground and pound. big win be sakurai.

and not BJ penn will never beat aoki or sakurai, bj penn have reached the point when he think he know everything and that he is the master, in martial arts there is always something new to learn and there is always somebody better than you.

Csari0 I am just saying that what I have read from several fighters in Japan was that the Japanese dont like blood. Elbows split people alot faster than punches. And usually way worse. Of course there is always the exception. Elbows are pretty badass
ie. Anderson Silva vs Tony Fryklund
That wouldnt have happened in pride but dont get me wrong I think that knees and kicks should also be allowed to a grounded opponent or from a grounded opponent.ie Anderson Silva vs Yushin Okami. It wasnt always MMA it used to be NHB. Thats the way it should be you should be able to use all your weapons. I was just sayin that brain damage was the most likely reason for them not being allowed in the UFC.
