I’m not gonna lie, but the striking in one of my old WWE games (that came out in 2003) I had for my PS2 has better looking striking and more realism than this game.

Yea its a little myeh on the striking here and there, but overall its a great game. Engine is a little complex, little kids will be mashing the shit out of buttons everywhere!! It was fun though. I will say I don’t like that when it goes to ko mode and you get knocked down, that you can’t even begin to defend yourself. That sucks pretty bad. You just lay still and get punch in the face over and over. Anyways, 8.5 out of 10 on the demo.

its definitely a good game. The knockouts are cool aside from the mouthgaurd flying out on every knockout…the subs are really challenging to pull off which is good in a way you wouldnt want it to be real easy so you sub a guy every time you attempt one. And if you find yourself winning every match turn the difficult up in the options menu you won’t be able to do it if you play on expert. Another thing I didn’t like was the stoppage the ref kinda just stands behind you and watches and then they bell will ring. Or youll hear him say stop and still just stand there I wish he would jump in and tackle you but oh well maybe next game. Should be real good with online play to. A game worth getting for any mma fan i think.

The game is a little deeper than most of you realize, and like a poster above said, knock it up to expert if you think you’re hot shit. The subs are hard, and could use a little tuning, but i’ve pulled a few off. The controls are more in depth than even the tutorial teaches you! When in certain positions, pause the game and look through the action lists. There are tons of moves, counters and all that you all are missing out on. Even striking is deeper than what the tutorial shows. I can’t wait to show you fools how the game is meant to be played.

I can understand playing a game where you are a ninja or something because you really can’t go out assassinating people with a sword and shuriken but I don’t get why anybody would play this when they could join a gym and spar! It’s like why the hell would you play Guitar Hero when you could just learn to actually play the guitar? Playing guitar impresses chicks, being good at Guitar Hero makes them think that you are a pasty, shut in, geeky virgin, lol

TheCanadian Says, in 4-24-2009 at 15:26:05 from 99.252.199.38

Whoever complained about graphics is dumb, the game looks amazing. Knockouts are kinda sporadic and unrealistic at times (I was knocked out and got multiple knock outs by elbow on the inside, honestly when was the last time you saw someone drop from an inside elbow besides when Anderson Silva dropped that guy) head kick kos happen a little much, but its for the sake of entertainment. We must have fought 40 times and only went to the third once, and never went to a decision. The ground is chaotic, but intuitive when you get the feel for a pass or a mount. Subs are also kinda sporadic, we only saw 4 subs the whole night, on one of them my friend bairly tried to sub me, while I furiously attempted to get out and he still got it, so dont know what that was about. All in all, we played a DEMO for 4 hours, and will play it for 4 more again tonight. Its THAT GOOD. Dont give up on the ground early, we didnt like it at first until a friend of mine got a mount, took my friends back, failed the RNC, got reversed, re-reversed, and finished with an arm bar.

So rather than looking at what it doesnt have, look at what it does do.

Junbo Says, in 4-25-2009 at 02:09:08 from 74.215.22.23

I would give it a 6 out of 10. If I factor in the complete game, an 8.

I don’t think the demo did this game any justice at all.

The most crucial aspect of this game is the collision. Though it’s real close, it’s not spot on. I imagine if I was playing 2 player for the first time, or playing online the collision could look like a mess when the button mash begins.

This was my first impression, which to most is crucial. The problem with the demo is it is defaulted to an extremely easy setting. My first 6 fights were finished within the first round, all by way of button mash, all knockouts with none of the knockouts really looking that spectacular.

The second thing that drove me nuts (in the beginning) is I was trying to play Lidell as a counterpuncher, backing up and waiting for the opponent to punch. I couldn’t figure it out easily and it frustrated me.

My point is, I am gamer enough to figure it out and from all I am reading it sounds like the fighting gets way deeper. But it’s not easy to figure out. It’s that deep. I honestly think alot of people will get bored with the game before they give it a chance and figure it out. After 6 matches it all started feeling the same.

Again, alot of this may have to do with the easy setting they introduce the game with. An easy thing they could have done to showcase what the game could do is start you at a very hard difficulty. This would allow the computer to stomp your ass, preferably in a spectacular fashion, showing off what the game can do. After it beats your ass once, it gives you the option for an easier setting. I think this would have inspired the average gamer to figure out how to be a bad ass too.

And just admit it. The submissions suck as is. Again not easy to figure out which makes it look like garbage initially.

I think what made THQ successful with the wrestling games is they already had a blueprint to work off of. the wrestling games are centered around the grappling system which makes the game look deep initially. its easy for people to play. This game doesn’t have that privilege. It’s centered around a striking game and it feels like grappling is secondary.

The hook in any game is grabbing your attention enough in the first 30 minutes. I don’t think this demo will grab “most” peoples attention for that long, it almost didn’t me and I have been looking forward to this game for 2 years.

I really think that sometime these devolopers are shooting themselves in the foot releasing demo’s like this.

This game is amazing
A lot of you guys have a half empty glass. While mine is filled to the top. Could be up for best sports game of the year. We’ll see how live and career goes… The striking is dynamic and unpredictable. Just they way I’d have it as well. Play on experienced, the fights turn out to be much more realistic.

hi Says, in 4-25-2009 at 02:49:41 from 67.159.5.52

not a good game. another one of those fighting games where see and react doesnt exist. in other words by the time you react to the punch by hitting the block button, it is too late, the opponent has hit u in the face already. I think they shouldve slowed down the punching. And one other thing… the standup defense as a whole is way too simple. there is no leaning, blocking a left punch , blocking a right punch, or any of that. theres basically one block button for high attacks and one block button for low attacks. boring. so in my opinion just another arcade fighting game no different from street fighter (stand up wise)..

My only complaint is with 2 player mode. If you get real close one player can just repeatedly hit the other without the other player having the ability to disengage, block or clinch.

Numerous times my roommate would be totally gassed on his energy bar and still get a KO because I could get away from his slamming attacks.

SeanPenn Says, in 4-25-2009 at 08:05:31 from 88.115.184.116

I played it for maybe 2-3 hours. Seems like a really entertaining game. You really have to think what you are doing on every difficulty setting other than beginner. Button mashing gets you nowhere fast. Subs are very hard, ground game clearly way more challenging than striking. I don’t personally think that’s a good thing, since there are alot of takedowns. Grappling can become frustrating. Graphics are ok, sounds are ok. I would say it’s worth buying.

TheCanadian Says, in 4-25-2009 at 15:58:36 from 99.252.199.38

Junbo, your way, way off. The only thing that sucks about the game is the tutorial, it doesnt explain shit AT ALL. Honestly, we discovered 85% of what we know on the ground through trial and error.
HERES SOME TIPS PEOPLE
You can run into leg kicks to make it a full chop (I got a sweep from one of these leg kicks), if you move into a punch it becomes a hook/power, if you move away it becomes an uppercut. If you are in full guard with Rua, you can pull the rubber guard. From the rubberguard, you can go for the triangle choke and the omaplata. To pull rubberguard is L1 + major transition, you have to be in full guard. Both fighters have L1 modified attacks, Chucks are found on the ground (I believe while in side control) and Rua’s are done in the clinch. Both fighters also have L1 modified transitions, Chucks being a devastating quick mount. If you hold L1 and press down with the movement stick with Rua, you will pull guard. This can be done in the clinch if you wanna go for the quick sub.
If you run at a downed opponent and press strike while falling into them, you will do a falling strike. If someone is running at you and you counter a falling strike, it can result in a triangle choke counter.

Subs we have seen so far: Flying armbar(have yet to finish) North-South Choke (have yet to finish. Armbar (couple of finishes) Kimura-only 1 finish, kneebar – 1 finish, omaplata (yet to finish) and triangle choke (yet to finish)

mygif_alt
TheCanadian Says, in 4-25-2009 at 16:05:45 from 99.252.199.38

Yes, there is a reversal from the mount. You must hold up on the left stick, and then try to spin the right joystick in the manner that you wish to spin. It might give your back up to your opponent if he counters however. To stop a guy from mounting you, hold left or right on the right joystick, this will have your fighter do his best to hold his opponent in place. Obviously it works better from certain positions (full guard this stops people from posturing up) For the button mashers out there having trouble getting taken down, heres a tip: dont mash. Use the right joystick and spin it to muscle your way through a defense. If you position it away from your opponent before he gets all the way into the shot, you will stuff it, and sometimes counter it, landing on top with the posibility of transitioning to back/side control, or going for the guillotine choke.
Oh yeah, i forgot, we’ve seen a whole bunch of guillotine attempts but never finished any. Infact we have yet to get the finish on any type of choke, along with the rear naked choke.
You can also flick the right joystick to catch leg kicks and get a takedown, or flick it at strategic moments on the ground to perform a full refersal. If you do the same direction as your opponent (lets say I press up going for a transition, and you flick up going for a counter) the counter is DEVASTATING. I was countered by my friend during an attmpted upward sweep, which got him right to the mount (and got me KTFO). I believe (but have yet to confirm) that if you counter in the opposite direction (he goes up you go down) the effect is opposite, having you getting the less advantageous position.

TheCanadian – You told me i was off, but didn’t say why or how, instead went into a strategy guide. You didn’t even make an attempt at reviewing the game.

I have played it more since my half ass attempt at reviewing it. I still hold firm on most of what I have to say.

I still think it’s a great game. I still think the controls are a bit whacked during clinch, ground and subs. Still think the collision is spotty.

And most of all I still think that the devs were ignorant defaulting the game to such an easy setting. It’s not the most brilliant way to sell this game.

I would also add that I don’t like the ratio of 1st round fights vs fights that went into the 2nd round. I have yet to see a 3rd round.

Don’t get me wrong. Still a great game and an even better foundation for future expansions than most sports games ive ever played. It’s just not without it’s flaws. Just because I love MMA doesn’t mean I won’t be critical on a video game developers attempt at recreating what I love. If you got a bunch of idiots running around saying the game is perfect, then it doesn’t motivate said developer to make an even better game next time.

Honestly would say top 5 graphics for a game i’ve got. Bad things replays seems like knockouts don’t even touch, surely must sort this out for the full version and clinching can seem a bit pointless with only week punches and kicks able to be thrown.

Great game! 8 out of 10 if they can fix one flaw! One serious flaw, the ability to submit someone is based mostly on how fast you can push a, b, x or y and not based on how talented a submission fighter is. 3 of my friends decided to have a go at the game and after about 3 fights one of my friends, while playing with Chuck, decided to try a submission and pulled it off. Then he proceeded to win every fight after that (maybe 20-25 fights) via submission. He must have racked up a hand full of submission victories each via guillotine, Armbar, Kimura, Kneebar and also finished a few via RNC and Triangle choke. We realize that no matter how fast the three of us could press the a, b, x, or y buttons, we couldn’t press it as fast as the other guy could. This resulted in Chuck submitting Rua at least 20 times in a row! This is completely unacceptable. Lets face it, Chuck knocks guys out, he doesn’t switch from being in someone’s guard to kneebar. This simply does not happen! Not 20 times in a row. THQ please fix this soon. I’m not sure what needs to be done, but this is going to be a major issue as soon as this game rolls out on 5-19.
Anyone else have this problem?

Do not get this game. The ground game on it is absolutely rediculous. You can’t submit them, but they submit you without even trying.
