Classic Fight. Royler is a warrior for not tapping to that.

That was back in an awesome time for Japanese MMA. So much back story and drama coupled with family legacy and intrigue. Now its just freak show stooge fest.. :(

Even though it was slow, this was a very dramatic and entertaining fight to watch. Actually, it was very similar to the Anderson Silva – Thales Leites fight, and proof that Silva does not deserve the idiotic vitriol he has received after his last two fights. Cote was tough, dangerous and conservative, so Silva took it slow. Leites played his match with the same strategy that Royler Gracie did here against Sakuraba; nobody is asking Sakuraba to jump into the guard of Gracie, why should they ask the same of Silva?

uhhhh i think we are going to have a controversy here indeed! royler didnt do much but he was landing some knees to the head there at the end … wtf was w/ the stopage? he was fine???? bullshit. sure royler may have lost anyways … but not like that, not like that

Why is everyone debating if it was early stoppage? Royler was losing badly and if it wasnt for the stoppage saku would have torn his arm up!

No controversy. Royler got completely owned. A whole round of butt scooting was indicative of an inner knowledge that Kazushi would dominate him on the feet. No need to watch his arm snap – he was done, just too stubborn to admit it.

Yes, his arm was jacked, but it was jacked for a couple minutes and they didn’t stop it. There was no way Royler could win that fight, but that stoppage didn’t make any sense. Why wait so long and call it?

The only reason the ref stopped the fight is cuz there were no judges so if the time finished it was going to be a draw….and since Sakuraba won both rounds….its only fair to stop the fight.(its not like Gracie was going anywere from that Kimora) so good stop and a good fight.

I love watching gracies get beaten. It seemed to be a bit of an early stoppage, but the ref probably saved him from tearing his shoulder.

This reminded me of Matt Huges beating Royce Gracie. Gotta give it to those Gracies though, they sure can take pain.

But really, why come to an mma match if the only thing you can do it bjj. Even then, he didn’t do anything in the clinch.

That japanese guy was awesome, even besides the weight difference. Royce was able to take on bigger opponents(though in a VERY boring rabbit punch hold on fashion).

I remember that fight made a huge impact in MMA, showing that a single-minded fighter like Royler would be in great disadvantage against a well-rounded fighter like Sakuraba. It also showed that Gracie jiu-jitsu wasn’t so complete as the family always tried to push.
The fight itself was only intertaining for the comic value. Royler calling Sakuraba to fight on the ground looked like a babe calling his mom. Complete humiliation. Almost as bad as Rickson against that fake Takada.

I love this fight…

It was actually approximately an hour and a half long, both fighters had agreed on no time limit.

Funny to see the UFC legend get schooled.

SAKURABA in his prime, he won in the UFC too, just to let the UFC juicers know! I don’t want to hear the “cage” BS!

I thank Sakuraba for introducing me to PRIDE.

Thank you very much!.. a real legend… to bad you didn’t retire when you had to.

That is the one thing I like in Japan and thats mixed weight fights. Make a tourney for say 180-200 lbs and offer some sick amount of cash. Sit back and watch the fireworks. lol this fight was one sided due to the Gracies not having much standup back in the day. Then size takes precendence because he needs to wrestle. Sakuraba opened alot of peoples eyes

Thanks Bruno for the upload. Sakuraba’s my favourite fighter of all time and it’s always a pleasure to watch his fights, especially when he was in his prime.

Yes, there was a weight difference but I think some of you are forgetting that this is a rare occasion where Sakuraba actually possessed a weight advantage. Many of his fights were against fighters 1-2 weight classes above him. Sakuraba submitted heavyweights like Kevin Randleman, and Conan Silvera (260 lbs vs Saku’s 185ish) and was doing well against Cro Cop until a doctor stoppage after the second round.

PrideFC was and has been the epitome of MMA!

this ufc charade has managed to completely degenerate the sport to a lowly reality show level. Along the way imposing ridiculous “boxing like rules”: 10point must system, unified rules; sound like boxing anyone? just lame attempts at manipulating outcomes by creating more stand-up encounters & blocking foreign participation all for sake of marketability, money and the entertainment of a NON-discerning public.
MMA in the United States simply hasn’t existed in a long time. Not until the stranglehold of these corrupt commissions and organizations like this ufc along with their absurd biases(NO-4point attacks, NO-rounds exceeding 5mins., NO-stomps, NO-soccer kicks etc.) will there be a return to the more inclusive MMA/ValeTudo format.

ufc is NOT MMA!
