A couple of years ago, I became really interested in Nick Diaz and his fighting psychology. Where some guys keep a cool n nonchalant attitude, others, like Nick, get themselves into an emotional frenzy. I’ve come to think that where some people just enjoy the competition of sports, others need deeper incentive. B.J. Penn, like Nick Diaz, seems to need to make incendiary comments to stir up the emotions that he fights with. The mind game is part of their war. Rory MacDonald has some seriously flat affect when he speaks as well as when he fights, but he’s also got some vicious killer instinct when it comes to timing n combos. I don’t think B.J.’s mind games phased him at all. It seems likely to me that Rory will one day be the welter weight champ. I don’t feel even slightly disrupted by B.J’s pre-fight aggression, Rory’s relatively emotionless responses, or the brutal pounding that he gave B.J. Its all a part of the fight game.

Mac has a dousche bag cockiness to him, so what? Arrogance and confidence will get you two things, wins and being KTFO. The second eventually comes and it will come to Rory someday. What he does from there is what will make him great or not. Ali was the greatest boxer of all time next to Robinson and he was the most arrogant fighter of all time as well.
