Filho looked like he had just run a three-hour marathon coming into that fight. No energy, sluggish stand-up, and he got lucky from a bad stoppage. It looked like the referee was anticipating a tapout that never happened. Unfortunate because Sonnon was dominating that fight.

sonnen screamed! there were 11 seconds left in the round but there was only 2 seconds where his arm would be in one piece, it was a good stoppage.

If he hadn’t been cocky and taking the fight to the ground he would have won easly.

I have to agree, obviously he didn’t tap, and Filho didn’t crank it… The ref jumped in to early… he didn’t give Sonnen a chance to get out, I’d like to think Sonnen is skilled enough to spin around, and use the sweat of his body to loosen the grip.

Sonnen didn’t tap because he was in too much pain and such a worse position he couldn’t move. The stoppage is early, but everybody how likes Sonnen has to thank the ref he saved him from a broken arm.

Didn’t Sonnen scream when Babalu had him in a heel hook? Didn’t he escape? How about Frankie Edgar against Tyson Griffin? Or Josh Neer against Joe Stevenson? The list goes on. Until the guy taps or unless there is a physical injury — i.e. Tim Sylvia’s arm breaking against Mir — you don’t step in and stop the fight.

It was a bad stoppage, he should have given Sonnen a few seconds at least to see if he was going to tap. It actually stinks as Sonnen should have won that fight.

As for Pride fighters looking bad, that’s debatable still. Shogun lost to Griffin and looked very un-Shogun like in the process. But as rumour has it he was injured a month before the fight and was married 3 weeks before the fight, I’m sure he regrets taking the bout in that time frame now. I will be shocked if Shogun doesn’t make a huge run in the next several fights. Cro cop gets knocked out by someone who doesn’t belong in the ring with him, but that happens also.

Now we forget that Anderson Silva and Quinton Jackson are Pride fighters, and guys like Dan Henderson and Wanderlei Silva are going to really kick things up a huge notch here. By the way if you guys liked Houston Alexander, you are going to love Sokodjou who is fighting in the next UFC coming up. This guy is supposedly a world class judoka, but he hasn’t had a chance to show his ground skills off as he’s knocked out 2 top Pride fighters (Noguiera and Arona) in under a minute combined.

I think the Pride versus UFC has a long way to go before it’s decided. Let’s not forget that it’s the Pride fighters who have had rule changes and the cage environment to adapt to, that gives the UFC guys the edge at this time. If the changes were the other way, I’ll bet we’d be saying that UFC fighters suck. Guys like Lidell and Belfort have tried Pride out and have had little success there, neither is a slouch as we all well know.

It’s cute to read all of the stupid takes on this fight. If you keep your emotions out and use logic to analyze this fight you would realize that a number of things happened here. First, Filho over trained badly. Second, the reach that Sonnen had was a much bigger advantage than anyone predicted because Filho has little stand-up in his arsenal. The most important thing to note is that Sonnen let his ego get in the way by shooting someone with the kind of BJJ that Filho has. Whether or not it should have been stopped is simply NOT the point. That scream would have prompted 90% of all refs to stop it. The point here is that no matter which way you cut it, Sonnen not only WAS the better fighter, he obviously still is. Filho has to get you to the ground and has to do it very early on or he will be took tired to lock something quickly. We need to see this one happen again. I hope that someone with at least half a brain gives us Filho-Chael II. I don’t bet on these things very much because upsets happen way too often, but I will try to find someone stupid enough to bet on Filho and buy a nice steak with it at Ruth’s Chris.

That was crap, when the guy says “no” after a stoppage, it isnt good.

The ref knew what he was doing. Sonnen may be better in some ways, but Filho looked to have that arm absolutely locked.

Chael Sonnen was CLEARLY the champ in the last fight with Paulo Filho. The REAL champ is Chael Sonnen! If Chael Sonnen hadn’t faught stupidly….giving so many opportunities to Paulo, Chael would have won EASILY!! Paulo KNOWS he’s not the champ. Chael Sonnen completely owned him! The champ is CLEARLY Chael Sonnen!

Ref Stepped in a bit too early there. But it’s hard to deny that there was little chance of Sonnen surviving the remainder of the round with his arm in tact! The real question is why oh why did he try to take the fight to the ground!

Ron: That’s nonsense. MMA is such that one mistake can change a fight. Yes, Chael Sonnen is a better wrestler and a better striker than Filho who couldn’t do much until Sonnen messed up. He messed up, and that loses you fights. You aren’t a champion if you lose a fight.

Would you say that Nogueira isn’t the real champion because Tim Sylvia was dominating up to then? Do you say that Matt Hughes didn’t win the first match against GSP because GSP was winning the first round but overcommitted to a kimura?

Bullshit. Fedor was champion because he ground and pounded Nogueira over and over again on more than one occasion and avoided every single submission attempt, over and over again. He didn’t get caught in an armbar. People who lose because their arm is bent in funny ways aren’t champions. You become a champ by beating the current one.

Referees need to let Fighters decide the fight! No more early stops.
