CBS continues to do a disservice to MMA. at 5:58 denny threw his last punch, at 6:10 he was pounded to the ground, and at 6:15 (after being destroyed for 17 seconds) the reff finaly stopped it. i hope my favorite sport doesn’t bite it because of these bush league idiots scaring casual fans away.

I disagree Kyle. He did beat Gomi but not badly. Look at Gomi’s face and his face after the fight. That and Gomi rocked him in the first. The reason Gomi lost was becasue his cardio was horrid and when that happened his punches wern’t so on point anymore and that’s when Diaz started landing punches which did very little damage to Gomi and in the end Gomi just couldn’t go on and got caught.

We all know how bad a fight starts performing when they gas and you can’t tell me Gomi’s lost wasn’t because of that.

But he is a pothead, who will never reach his full potential cuz i dont think he really gives a shit like he should. And Ken… the casual fans being scared away? These are two guys trying to knock each other the fuck out, if someone cant understand that… they shouldn’t watch. This isn’t a karate sparring contest with a bunch of kids… these are grown ass men.

mygif
CoreyNo Gravatar Says, in 7-28-2008 at 01:32:41 from 12.157.134.103

I guess to finish that statement to Ken, so long as the opponent is intelligently defending himself (hands up blocking the head, and weaving/ducking punches) the ref will not call the fight. At 6:08, the fight should have been called. The one punch on the ground… barely was a punch, but still. If the ref would have stopped it any early, a lot of ppl would have called it an early stoppage.

EBDNo Gravatar Says, in 7-28-2008 at 02:08:06 from 72.45.103.195

I always liked Nick Diaz, I like the way he fights, but he’d better start re-learning defense and head movement. I give him credit though, the guy comes to fight.

BTW, I totally agree with Ken’s comment. The fight was stopped waaay too late. If some fighter were to get seriously injured or killed by accident in the course of a clean, well-refereed match, the sport could survive that. But when the organizations making the money off the fighters allow a guy to wail on someone long after he’s finished, maybe so they can have that brutal “money shot” clip to promote their brand, or to promote a certain fighter, not only are they doing a disservice to the sport, and putting its continued success in jeopardy, but they’re putting fighters health and livelihood and their LIVES at risk.
Maybe the ref is just a complete idiot — whatever, that was an appalling finish.

Protect the fighers, EliteXC. It’s a tough sport, yeah, but no one should be taking gratuitous blows more well after he’s completely unable to defend himself. If Thomas Denny died from those blows, there’d be endless replay of that finish on TV news — those punches in that “exciting” finish would amount to hammering nails into the coffin of the sport, and it’d be hard — make that *impossible* for any public official or journalist to defend the legitimacy of the sport.

I don’t like the way the UFC controls the, uhhh, storyline around the belts (*cough cough*) but at least their refs look out for the fighters, and get the hell in there fast at the right moment — give or take.

Elite’s trying to get an edge in the prurient idiot market at the expense of fighters’ health. Shayna Baszler too — there was no need for her to continue to take that abuse in the last part of her fight. She was obviously overmatched at that point, so the ref’s job is to step in there and protect her, not make more money from the mouth-breather demographic.

KJ Noons needs to stop ducking Diaz so he can get his belt.

KJ Noons in my eyes is not a real champion i mean the guy got beat by Crazy Horse that says it all. Nick Diaz is a world class fighter and i am surpirsed he gets such little respect.

And Thomas Denny is no slouche i mean he is not great but he has fought tough guys and still has 2 -1 win lose ratio

Ken, stop being a pussy, the stoppage was spot on. This is MIXED MARTIAL ARTS FIGHTING. A tough, brutal sport like it should be - and you’re here saying we should water it down and appease the ‘casual’ fan. Screw that! It’s been toned down enough, first it was headbutts, then soccer kicks and stomps (how I miss pride), what do you want next? No elbows?! The ref jumping in at the slightest bit of blood or a good hit!? Bloody Hell! Grow some balls or stop watching MMA if you think pandering to mainstream is a good thing for my most beloved sport. Let fighters be fighters and let them use as many tools as possible and let the refs do their job. Josh did a perfect job then.

Good Fight!

Yeah. I noticed it was way too late as well. Seems to be happening a lot. Ether way too late or too early.
I think Nick might like to get hit. He should train to have faster take downs and get to use his bjj more often. I think he just likes to box. Refs defiantly need to protect the fighters #1 priority.

weatherman2012No Gravatar Says, in 7-28-2008 at 10:10:40 from 68.161.241.182

The fight should not have been stopped any earlier than it was. Many fighters in Denny’s position have come back to win fights after being rocked. That’s why the sport is so exciting. When Denny went down the last time he tried to get in his gaurd position, which the ref saw, but it was too late. He was already done. The ref should give a fighter a chance to defend themselves in that position and that’s what the ref did.

As far as Nick Diaz goes, it’s true that he’s a thug but no one can argue with his skills. If he had a coach that could discipline him better he would be unstoppable. He’s a bit too cocky but he is one of the most entertaining fighters out there. If some people are turned off by his attitude…oh well. The sport is still better with him than without him.

You fucking idiots the last 20 seconds of the fight he was out on his feet. “Oh, he was pulling guard”- he was holding his head with one hand as if he had an awful headache. That’s not intelligently defending himself.

Also, “They took this and that out” fuck that. The state’s that say that it’s human cockfighting did that, not any actual fans of the sport. If they don’t stop shit early enough then pretty soon the states are going to be asking for more things to get taken out for MMA to be sanctioned.

PS: I know Andy didn’t say anything about pulling guard (It was weatherman) but his post made him seem like a blubbering fool.

mygif
KieranMacNo Gravatar Says, in 7-28-2008 at 22:57:39 from 68.32.166.219

There’s no way in hell Denny was intelligently defending himself, and that (in ANY major MMA organization) is grounds for stopping the fight. Denny’s hands were down most of the time and his head was wobbly for the last 15 seconds on his feet, then he was holding his head with one hand while he was on the ground.

That fight was stopped LATE, and all of you asses that think it’s destroying your “most beloved sport” to stop a fight when a fighter can’t defend himself any longer aren’t fans - you’re barbarians who don’t give a damn about the fighters. If you want organized and televised MMA to gain an interest in this country (which, as I think about it, you probably don’t - you seem the type to think you “own” a sport because you’ve been watching it longer), you’ll acknowledge the fact that a couple of deaths or paralyzed fighters who weren’t protected by the ref is all it would take to cut the rug out from under the sport.

Let me explain it to you more simply: less interest = less sponsorship = less money for the leagues/fighters/venues = fewer leagues and tons of good fighters who go elsewhere to fight or are forced to retire because they can’t get a fight lined up to support their training.

So yeah, by all means, let’s have the refs let the fight go til the fighter is knocked unconscious. Hell, why not just take away tapping out and let them break some arms and choke each other out? They don’t matter, right?

KnuckleJammer - You’ve obviously got no idea about MMA and I’m afraid YOU’RE the one sounding like a “blubbering fool”.

KieranMac - Standing 8 counts are FAR more barbaric than what Denny got. You also have NFI or just haven’t been watching the sport very long. I for one have been around since the START. It’s far better to have a stoppage like that than a BS early stoppage ala Vera vs Werdum. Denny will happily fight another day after that. Stop being so melodramatic. Andy made some good points. Josh’s call was spot on. If you didn’t like it, or want it changed - that is how MMA has always been and SHOULD REMAIN. If you don’t like it, watch something else, don’t change the sport.

mygif_alt
MagNo Gravatar Says, in 7-29-2008 at 07:45:53 from 210.49.194.78

EBD - You made some good points with a well reasoned and thought out response. If everyone responded in such a manner it would be great.

I’ll agree to disagree, but I appreciate your side of the argument.

There have been tens of thousands of fights in MMA history, and hundreds of finishes more brutal than that, but only 1 death. Hell, WAY more people die riding horses in equestrian events. Yes I know there is a ’stigma’ attached to MMA, but I’m afraid if we want the sport to remain like it is, we just have to HOPE that a fighter doesn’t die. Fighting is fighting, it’s a dangerous sport and all fighters know that they risk serious injury doing what they do. The refs do the best job they can between allowing a fighter good chance to recover and deciding if they have had enough. It’s a line ball decision. There is no strict ‘rule’.

Denny’s stoppage may have been a little late yes, but it was hardly severe. And hindsight is a perfect science. At the time, I think Josh’s call was right.

But one thing is we should not change things too much just to become ‘accepted’.

Peace.

EBDNo Gravatar Says, in 7-29-2008 at 19:07:55 from 72.45.103.195

Mag, I absolutely agree we shouldn’t change things too much just to make the sport accepted by people who don’t like too much violence, but the other side of that coin is that upstart organizations might weaken protocols about fighters’ safety to they can get the “money shot” and make themselves more exciting — acceptable, in effect — to that sizable demographic who don’t really appreciate the sport but simply enjoy seeing unconscious guys get pounded.

I’ve seen worse stoppages for sure. What bothers me is those last two punches. The third last punch should have ended the fight. Just before the second last punch, Denny was “holding his head with one hand as if he had an awful headache”, as KnuckleJammer noted. If you’re lying on your back, inert, with one hand over your eyes, that’s not fighting back.

I was a little too hard on the ref — I think he was just a little bit unsure, a little bit too much of a spectator to what was going on. FWIW, I think the best referee by far is Big John McCarthy. He knows the sport inside out, he respects the fighters, and the guy’s just got an artist’s sense of how a fight’s going. When things begin to go south he hovers up close like a cat and then at the right moment he gets in there decisively and plows the winner off like a linebacker.

Anyway, thanks, Mag, I appreciate your perspective. It’s not an exact science, and hindsight is indeed 20-20

To all the assholes who think this fight was a sham because of the ref supposedly taking his time to stop the fight, Denny kept swinging, he didn’t want to go down. If he decides not to go down and continues to throw punches, he’s gonna get knocked some more until he decides to like he did in the 2nd round.

As well, Nick Diaz is nothing but class A fighting. He’s got hands almost like Silva, where he can get them in little holes and right on the button. I really want to see him dedicate a fight to the ground along with stand-up to show his true versatility to the fans that haven’t witnessed it.
