I am really tired of Guida’s BS style. He never even hurt Diaz. Trust me I understand the control factor and his way of wearing people down, but in a fight you are supposed to hurt your opponent. He never even got close to hurting Diaz. Yet Diaz had him in some bad situations on the feet and hurt him. These type of fighters are doing nothing more than hugging their way to a decision. He doesn’t fight a good fight, he exploits the judges obligation to tally cage control.

I agree with you Zacchaeus.

Zacchaeus is completely right. Hugging shouldn’t count as controlling the fight, total BS. Nate won the fight.

Grinding performance by Guida, and probably a deserved win, but here is a good example of how the cage can make fights look very ugly.

Man, in Rounds 2 and 3 it looked like Clay was simply using his wrestling skills to jump of Diaz’s back so he wouldn’t get punched in the face. Zacc is on the ball. Guida used his wrestling more to avoid confrontations in this fight than he did to assert his dominance, but he won because he’s such a good wrestler that he can make it look like his opponent isn’t doing anything when they’re chasing him around their back trying to get something to happen.

there is no way that was a split decision. Clay Guida was in control the entire fight with the exception of the 10 second flurry of punches diaz landed in the third round. Nonetheless, nice Victory for Guida. Also, I just want to add…what a classy Victory speech by Guida.

I dont want to see Guida fight until he learns how to. All he does is try to LnP you for the whole fight (and he is not even good at that). Take damage, hug, take damage, hug and on and on. I dont even like Diaz….I am just sick of seeing this guy hug his way to victory. HE IS LIKE RANDY COUTURE W/O THE DIRTY BOXING. YYYYYAAAAWWWNNNN. What a waste of time!

Hell of a figvht thanks Bruno for posting these fights so quickly!

I honestly thought Diaz won the 1st and 3rd round but as an honest mma fan I can see how the first round could have went to Guida. Drummo you are unaware of the 10 point must system if you do not see why it was a split decision. It was so close it could have possibly been a draw.

But Guida did more and was the aggressor. He lost all the stand up exchanges and stole the first round with the full nelson followed by a powerbomb.

Good win for Guida / Diaz is one tough motherfucker

jeremyemilio Says, in 2-1-2009 at 16:29:48 from 142.167.41.62

Just a terrible decision. Anyone giving Guida rounds 2 and 3 is either blind or wildly ill informed. I’m a wrestler. I appreciate good wrestling. But there’s a HUGE difference between working from the clinch, looking for a throw or for an advantage (like Randy Couture does, or even like Karo and Kim did in the third round of last night’s fight) and literally HUGGING a guy for ten minutes. Clay had no intention of throwing Diaz, of working for the choke, or even of doing a bit of dirty boxing. To call him the aggressor is ridiculous. Clay just wanted to cuddle; if it wasn’t for Diaz this wouldn’t have been a fight at all.

Bartz Says, in 2-1-2009 at 21:31:56 from 121.217.245.201

Diaz possibly one the third round, but only just… Until the rules of the UFC change it is clear that Guida won this fight…

This isnt a battle to the death but a three round contest. Sure his wrestling maybe boring but until the UFC changes the rules that fight is a clear win to Guida and anyone who thinks differently is kidding themselves!

I do agree that the scoring needs changing but to deny Guida the win for taking advantage of the rules and scoring system in use is ridiculous. The only thing Diaz did in the fight was land a couple of punches that didnt even make Guida flinch in the 3rd round.. how is that good enough to score a win in a 3 round fight?

bottom line Nate won that fight and even guida knows it thats why he was bouncin around cuz he couldnt even believe they gave him the fight.

Porsche930_Pilot Says, in 2-1-2009 at 22:52:07 from 69.159.11.40

Clay had to fight the fight the way he did because Diaz had such a reach advantage it’s hard to stand toe to toe for the whole fight. He should of been able to get out the holds when Clay tied him up but he couldn’t because he has no bulk,no muscle. He shouldn’t of even got the round he got.

Guida won, he dominated, I think the PROFESSIONAL JUDGES could see that. I don’t care what your high school wrestling career has taught you all but if a dude is on your back pushing your face into the ground for 3/4 of the match, you loose… guida is exciting because no one can match his pace.

jeremyemilio Says, in 2-2-2009 at 19:19:13 from 142.167.53.240

Hey, maybe instead of landing punches, throwing Guida to the mat, and trying to submit him with the Kimura, Nate should have just hugged Guida back. They could have laid in the middle of the mat for 15 minutes and snuggled. Then it would have been a draw, and all the Guida fans could come on here and post about how amazing the fight was and what warriors both these guys are just to show such pure hugging aggression for three full rounds!

mygif
Bowmanganie Says, in 2-3-2009 at 05:25:55 from 75.129.160.120

This is how you loose in the UFC: Allow the other fighter to fight his fight and not have and answer for it. So what if Guida “hugged” the whole fight? Some folks call it wrestling, maybe even win gold medals doing exactly what Guida did. Diaz couldnt come up with an answer except when he was punching, but if you are doing well and then let your opponent go back to where they are winning, then you loose. Too bad for Diaz, but I am happy for a Guida win. Since Penn couldnt handle the cardio of GSP then I think Guida could have about a 70% of beating the prodigee.

mygif_alt
jeremyemilio Says, in 2-3-2009 at 13:46:28 from 138.73.16.153

No one EVER won a gold medal in wrestling doing what Guida did. In wrestling you get ZERO points for grabbing a guy around the waist and holding on. ZERO. You have to take him DOWN to get points. That’s my problem with the decision. I coached wrestling; one of my best buddies is a national level wrestling referee (working on his international certification). Let me assure you, what Guida was doing was NOT wrestling. It may seem subtle for those who do not know the sport, but if you know even the slightest bit about wrestling you know that Guida not only did nothing, he (more importantly) ATTEMPTED to do nothing. In rounds two and three he never ONCE tried to bring Nate to the ground. The only time they left their feet was when Nate threw Guida. And even THEN Guida didn’t take advantage of having Nate’s back; just hugged him laying down, rather than standing up. To call that wrestling is a slander to the sport.

ive watched this several times and i dont understand what you guys are talking about guida being boring and just hugging. he was throwing constant leg kicks, tried to slam diaz about 8 times, landed 10 good elbows, countered diaz’s takedowns every single time, and just controlled the fight. thats what guida does, he sticks to you and doesnt let go. with a reach disadvantage ofcourse he’s gonna do that, he’s not going to purposely engage with a guy that has a huge advantage in reach. thats why its called “mixed martial arts”, not boxing.

Diaz may be a punk but he is also an entertaining fighter… Guida may be a classy guy but is by far the most boring, and over ranked fighter in the UFC. Diaz might have come off as being disrespectful but was simply trying to put on a good fight and give the fans what they paid for. Diaz was robbed and i hope Guida fights a better wrestler them him next because if he does, he WILL get his ass handed to him

rwalker0717 Says, in 4-2-2009 at 19:13:08 from 205.146.48.5

Regardless of what you may personally think of Guida or Diaz (yes, Guida’s a nice guy and Diaz is kind of a jerk), when it comes to combat sports, be it boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu or (most) MMA, one must work to improve one’s position and/or be actively working for a KO/submission. That is what makes it a fight, instead of a hip control contest. It’s unfortunate that the UFC doesn’t see it this way. To make a point, I was never a great wrestler, but I started jiu-jitsu 6 months ago and even from the beginning (from a standing postion), I could control many of the blue belts (from the most decorated school in Pittsburgh) indefinitely from their back simply by locking one hand over my opposite wrist. However, if I’m not looking for a sub or to improve position what have I accomplished, besides wasting energy? In a cage fight or in real fight, this would not absolutely end the confrontation. I have not displayed a well-rounded skill set or a variety of exceptional technique, I have not tried to “finish” my opponent in any manner, but simply used brute force in an attempt to avoid damage. Yes, Mr. Guida is a likeable and humble guy and I respect his attitude. However, he has simply “survived” his last 3-4 fights with a similar lay and pray approach or more recently with his MJ-tribute “I’m a lover not a fighter” style which he used to decision Mr. Diaz. Yes, if a fight is simply based on control, then Mr. Guida has won. Unfortunately, it is usually based (obviously the UFC has recently taken an acception to this) on the control of one’s opponent through the greater display of skill and damage rendered unto them. I believe Bas Rutten (and how could you not trust that guy) made a great point when he said that unlike a punch or kick, a takedown means nothing if you do nothing with it. To Mr. Guida’s credit or maybe more to Mr. Diaz’s discredit, Nate did not have an answer to the bear hug, besides some unrealistic standing kimura attempts…have to use those underhooks, buddy. In conclusion, Mr. Guida is a stand-up guy (though not in the MMA sense), but the fact that he has mastered the bear hug and can pedal a BMX bike (with only one tire) up Mt. Everest without breaking a sweat doesn’t make him a fighter.

OK I’m a wrestler so this may seem biased but some of you are saying Clay was going for points the whole time. I just want to say that during the first round Clay was dominating Diaz despite the 8 inch reach disadvantage, he was countering Diaz’s jabs and crosses by going inward and striking fast, kneeing and elbowing. Guida does alot of fast strikes that are little and not showy but it’s there and it hurts for example, when Diaz attempts his half ass shot against Guida, he falls on his hips, then Guida quickly knees him the face which makes him go down.

And I’d like to mention his use of the Full nelson which is just another of Guida’s employment of wrestling in MMA

Objectivity: it’s an elusive thing. If a person like someone, he tends to ignore the other’s errors, weaknesses, etc. However, to get to the truth, we must do just that. If truth and accuracy are what we REALLY want, we don’t take up for the fighter we like just because we like him more than his opponent. We admit that, sad as it might be for us, he lost. Unfortunately, objectivity is too often rare; especially when it comes to politics, “religion” and MMA.
Apparently, the judge who scored the fight for Diaz has some difficulty with this concept and must really love Diaz. The judge was a female and while I don’t believe that means “inferior” automatically with regard to judging MMA, she must have been dropping acid. Anyone who really knows MMA, would have quickly and without much difficulty assessed the fight at 30-27 in favor of Guida. Several of you mentioned most of the reasons, the least not of which are the takedowns and the pounding Diaz took between periods of being smothered.
And anyone that believes takedowns don’t count unless “you do something with them” is also very wrong. While Joe Rogan often notes that despite a takedown, the fighter who has been grounded is not being pounded much, takedowns are consistently huge scoring incidences; regardless of the degree of damage done. The most recent example was Hughes v. Serra. Hughes did little damage to Serra (though undoubtedly Serra wasn’t comfortable with the contact Hughes did manage to make with his fists) but won the fight primarily due to the takedowns.
