That was Filipovic’s finest hour. In one night he ko’s Wanderlei Silva and later that same night tko’s Josh Barnett to win what has to be the toughest tournament in MMA.

I’d like to see the UFC attempt a tournament like this. You definitely must go through hell to win one of these, especially the final when you have to fight twice in a night.

Anyone know the reason Barnett tapped there? Looked like Mirko did some serious damage there about 20 sec. before the stoppage. Maybe an eye poke or a broken bone in his face?

Mefninja you’re right he failed miserably in the UFC. I think as he never had fought in the close quarters of an octagon before he needed a few more fights to adapt. He was a K1 kickboxer before turning to MMA, and I believe the dynamics of working the ring are what he was used to.

I find some irony in his career, he arguably may have been responsible for ending the Axe Murderers career, or at least led to his decline. A few fights later Cro Cop gets whacked with the same kick he laid on Wandy and he goes into a decline.

That’s the fight game, I read a very good article recently on the UFC’s site and couldn’t have agreed more with the author. He talked about styles making fights and that it’s inevitable in this sport someone will take you out. He went on to say when Anderson Silva gets taken out people shouldn’t say he isn’t great, they should say what took so long?

@jerbear - josh’s both eyes were allready swollen, Mirko accidentally (as Josh said after the fight) poked his eye so he tapped cuz he couldn’t see shit and was already well beaten.

If you’d watched the full video, you get to see Josh’s post-fight interview. He tells us that he tapped due to being blinded in both eyes(both were poked I think). He also puts on a rather good Elephant Man impersonation, mocking the state of his face!

Cro Cop doesn’t as the experience of cage fights he isn’t big enough for the HW class and the LHW its to crowded (of top fighters).

Mirko only failed in UFC because he wasn’t used to the cage and the use of elbows. Also he lost to Kongo because that headkick of Gonzaga probably wrecked him mentally. He was so afraid to push the action on Kongo, I felt bad for him.

crop got smashed in the ufc cos he wasnt used to being in the cage and he is a small heavy weight, and uses the ropes to avoid his bigger opponents but in the ufc all the guys he awas fighting where much bigger and he had trouble with it, plus gonza got lucky with that head kick and messed him up and congo kneeed the shit out of his BALL SACK, if ufc was in a ring he would do much better cos hes a counter fighter he needs the ropes there apart of his style.

Mirco failed in the UFC because of several things.

1. He was not motivated (his own statment)
2. His bjj sucks, and if you see his first UFC fight you se he was almost not able to finish his opponet on the ground in general).
3. His wrestling sucks, all he does is defend on the ground (in general)

Dont get me wrong I like Mirko and hope he can come back and be a great fighter once more (He survived Fedor).

MMA is the future of fighting.

You mean the UFC should go back to a tournament format. It started that way but changed later. Look up UFC 1 thru 4…

FightsLikeGirl, you’re right the old tournament in the UFC 1 - 4 were open weight class tournament style events. I wouldn’t mind seeing one of those every couple of years to name a tournament champ, and I like the idea of doing weight specific tournaments maybe once a year.

It was an eye gouge from the right hand at 8:42 that did it. I don’t think it was intentional and the ref did not see it. Regardless, Cro cop was on his way to winning Josh was being schooled in the striking parts of the fight.
