1st and 2nd round go to Melvin Guillard, 10-9, 10-9, and the 3rd goes to Gleison Tibau 10-9. I think because Tibau finished off with the mount, it skewed everyone’s outlook on the fight. Guillard did more damage in rounds 1 & 2, plain and simple.

He didn’t get destroyed by any means, he did the only damage in the fight… Tibau attempted take downs, got stuffed the majority of the time… and only sat on him when he got it, if he could keep him down…

The judges could of gone either way… i guess they just now decided to stop condoning lay and pray..

Tibau had a couple takedowns in the 1st, but did absolutely nothing, Melvin got right back up each time. He also landed some solid body kicks which is more then Tibau’s zero strikes connected. Round one was close, but Melvin took it in my eyes.

Melvin won the first and second round IMO. He controlled the pace through the first round. He was getting off first, and landing numerous strikes. Tibau really played offensive with minimal counterstriking and a short lived take down in the first round after recieving a kick. Guillard ended the round by controlling the center of the cage. He ended the round with a shot on Tibau. The second round we saw Tibau attempting the takedown. Melvin was able to stabilize his position before flipping Tibau upside down with a hip toss. Guillard then took the center of the ring and had the fans chanting “Melvin!” which could have played a role in the judges decision. After falling on his back after a second hip toss attempt that failed Melvin quickly got back to his feet without recieving any damage. Melvin then took the center of the cage and got the better of each exchange with various punches and kicks. The last 30 seconds of the second round Tibau did get a takedown, but never got Guillard to his back and didn’t do any damage, but finished the round that way. Tibau dominated throughout the final round with various takedowns, sweeping into top control and mount finishing the round in the mount. Each judge declares a score for each athlete after each round. They score it round by round. So if you watch the video close you may see Guillard winning the first and second rounds. Keep in mind that it was a split decision. 3 judges, 3 opinions.

It was close and especially with Tibau ending the fight with the mount it looks like he won, but on the whole Guillard came off better. It was close, but I think that was a fair decision.

Guillard obviously won the first 2 rounds, Tibau couldnt do fuck all to him..

sure he mounted him twice and it looked good, the last one he may have finished but ran outta time… Melvin had no damage visibly and escaped everything Tibau put him in… so its possible he could have escaped the last mount like he did the last one..

personally i scored it the first two rounds for melvin. third round gleison was dominant. he even rocked melvin on his feet at one point. but yeah. bit of a slow burner but ill give it to melvin.

I agree with Androly-San. There’s something really wrong with a fight, when a fighter (Tibau) gets an upperhand and his corner start screaming “don’t fight, don’t fight!”
Something seriously fishy. Although, I agree Tibau didn’t do shit until the last minute of the last round, Melvin didn’t neither. At least, Tibau had completely control of the fight when it ended.
In my opinion, they should have stopped the fight, slapped both fighters in the face and sent them home until they decided to fight.
There was nothing even close to technique or will power in this. They might have done it as a charitable fight to get Melvin back in the game.

why can’t judges score rounds a draw more often. this is a good example. the first two rounds were so close there was literally a punch in it either way. if they score the first two rounds as draws which they were instead of just picking one for the sake of it you get the correct decision in the end.
definately something that needs to be looked at

Great fight! Those of you who thought this fight sucked need to retake MMA 101. Tibau wasn’t striking on the ground because every time he opened up Melvin was on his feet. Therefore, even with the take downs he was not in control. Melvin landed clean strikes on his feet. The explosiveness of both fighters caused them to be very respectful of each others skills. This was not a boring fight but a technical one.

Guillard did not win any rounds in my book. Rounds 1 and 2 he backed up and defended Gleison’s takedowns while landing no real strikes except for one kick to the body. Gleison was the agressor those rounds constantly pressuring Guillard and making him weary of takedowns. I don’t see how he could have won 1 round. Defending takedowns and running away does not win fights.

Guillard landed no strikes in rounds 1 and 2, he was to busy defending takedowns. To me he was being controlled. Sure he got up, but when he got up he was again pursued and taken down. Tibau ducked and weaved guillards strikes he landed no real damaging strikes except maybe that one kick, when he was taken down after. No fighter really did any damage in rounds 1 and 2 but Tibau dictated it. Tibau was the clear aggressor in all rounds.

I do believe Tibau won the 1st and 3rd rounds. The takedowns, aggressiveness, and ground work is really how I think he did it. Melvin is a great fighter and I would love to see these two go at it again. Tibau just needed to win this fight and one more and he would of had a tittle fight .

You can always tell when someone is a completely clueless, uneducated meathead versus a knowledgeable fan and/or fighter. The meatheads complain of a “boring” fight unless someone’s head is split open. Melvin displayed hugely improved takedown defense and some great ground escapes against a skilled BJJ master. That in itself is both exciting and impressive. That said, I agree that the split should have gone slightly in favor of Tibau for aggression and control. Close fight for sure. PS: Anyone who screams racism when none exists is enabling actual racism to persist, and should really learn to connect brain to mouth (or pen) before activating it.
