The fight was one of the most awaited MMA fights of all time. Most wanted to know if the old school style of Royce Gracie would hold up to the vicious ground and pound style of Matt hughes.
With a crowd that was overly rooting for Gracie, Hughes actually got booed as he entered the Octagon. Royce however, was showered with a hero’s welcome from fans in the Staples Center.
If Royce was at is prime Hughes would never won.
This was devastating to watch. I really wanted to see Royce pull it out. I don’t think he would beat Hughes now, but I also don’t think that was the best of Royce there. It would’ve been interesting to see what he could’ve pulled off had he been able to claim full guard.
in with the new, out with the old……and the same can be say about this coming fight on Saturday….
Know GSP is going to take out Matt Hughes, again.
Matt Hughes is a beast on the ground. Too bad though, cause GSP is going to absolutely destroy him in wrestling.
Nice… I like the way he chose to pound in stead of submitting Royce. I bet this is Royce’s second most embarrassing loss, and well deserved too. I have never been a Gracie fan, Yes BJJ is effective but not entertaining. That’s why I like Royce’s most embarrassing loss… to Sakuraba. A beating that lasted over an hour and 15 minutes.
Good for Matt….but he would have never done it when Royce was at his prime time….
Royce was great when no one knew about BJJ but now he just doesn’t have the strength and skills of other fighters. A shame, though. He was humiliated.
wow!!! what a way to destroy a legend.. truly a brilliant performance from hughes but i beliv GSP is best in their division
Royce was way too old to be fighting at that point. A young Royce Gracie from UFC 1-3 vs. Matt Hughes might have been interesting.
I don’t care what anyone says, Matt is one tough s.o.b. and I like him as a fighter.
The only way to know if Matt is better than Royce is to do it old school style — NO RULES!
Matt beat Royce under the new UFC rules but I think it would have been a different outcome if this was done using no rules.
UFC Champion fighters are not the best fighers in the world but rather the best UFC fighers.
Hughes, Gracie, GSP…..come on….Hightower, War Machine, Saunders, Randy Savage, those are the most dangerous individuals in the sport.
“I KNOW MMA”, I disagree with the Randy Savage but, I think Ross Ponting is a way better hitter then Hughes or GSP

Great fight for Hughes. I think he’ll give GSP a fight, I’d have to agree GSP has a distinct odds-favourite but.
Gracie should have fought a few times in the ufc before fighting a champ like hughes. Not a smart business choice for gracie.
One of the hardest things for these fighters to do is retire, even when they are past their prime, like Gracie. The best thing to do is to quit when it’s time, and go out when are on top. Now that is class. Rocky Marciano was a good example.

Look at Hughes now at like 34 years old he already is going downhill.

Gracie is so overrated. His wins in the past were against fighers that didnt have any submission skills at all. Nowadays you need to be a complete fighter to make the top. Royce´s stand-up fighting kind of looks like my grandma´s

remember that royce fighter with time limited,and a bet that if the fight be free time ,royce win!!!!remember that in ufc 4 he stay in octogono for 15min to a lot of time,who today in ufc can stay for a big time???nobory so for me and my friends he is the best and the champion.
Uh, let me put it this way; if you were a fighter and you were to choose whom to fight between a prime gracie or a prime hughes, who would you choose to fight hoping that you would win, whether it be under the no-rules and the new fight format with rules?
Ppl seem to overlook that in the early UFC Gracie used his fighting gear much to his advantage. For example he would use it for protecion as well as to choke opponents. And he hits like a girl.
It is not his fault that when it all started other competitors didn’t have enough skills te beat him, but he did use his gear as an advantage several times and I don’t think he’d be as dominant in todyas MMA competition.
Yeah in teh old UFC Gracie would use finger bends to tap people out. use part of there clothing to choke em out. When using the rules they use now days in UFC its a lot harder for him to tap people out, so when a better fighter comes along he jsut gets owned.

Yeah replying to the guys earlier, Royce certainly didn’t bloody up Kimo in UFC 3. His punches are fantastic.
