I have never seen Shogun get worked like that before. He was totally gased by the 2nd round. There was no agression in his stand up game and when the fight when to the ground, he was worse.
I was dissapointed to say the least, Shogun is one of the best. He just wasn’t himself.

shogun’s cardio was awful. but the fight itself wasn’t too bad. it’s always funny watching a guy gas out :) shogun never retreated either even as he become ultra-sloppy!

i’m also pretty tired of hearing all this pride vs ufc nonsense. these guys are fighters. they just fought for different organizations. shogun had a shitty night. it happens.

pride, as an entertainment product, was very well put together. the point is that no fighter is “Pride” or the “UFC”. this is all promoter junk that feeds the pockets of the corporates that would never dare step in the ring or cage.

hehehe, too bad for chuck ;)

I dont think anyone realizes how hard it is for the pride guys to perform in a new atmosphere and fight well with new rules. Shoguns nerves probably got the best of him. if you cant control your adrenaline before and during a fight, and you stay nervous. It eats away at your attrition.

In response to Frayner, Shogun certainly is not all hype. Shogun has totally earned his respect, he absolutely destroyed rampage Jackson (current UFC LH champ). In my opinion he was the best middle weight in pride, better than Vanderlei (cos Vanderlei is old now). These new rules are hurting certain pride fighters, Vanderlei will lose too. The UFC has much more wrestling and elbows, Pride was all like ‘wambam’ kick you in the face, stomp on your head (more diffs than that).

i think that shogun gassed because of forrests size, and he doesnt stop, that combo makes the fittest guys wear out pretty quick. props to forrest, he definately isnt a step stone fighter which i thought he was, i just hope he gets the rematch with jardine, i hate that guy. even though he beat chuck i still think he is the most over rated fighter in the game today, with his bloody monkey stance, argh damn him, i mean rashad evans beat him for christ sake!

I don’t agree that Pride is inferior based on the recent string of upsets. In a lot of cases, the Pride fighters just seemed out of sync. It will be interesting to see what happens with these fighters’ long term UFC careers. Strict UFC fans haven’t seen the real Rua, Crocop or Heath Herring. There are also some Pride fighters that are doing fairly well in UFC so far like Nogierra (sp?) and Quinten Jackson. And, of course we haven’t seen the real king of Pride, Fedor. Let’s not discount Pride until it’s all said and done.

Two very equal fighters. Shogun is just awesome and think that this win for Grif is a BIG one. Shogun is definitely all the hype; he just gassed. Shogun should have watched UFC Unleashed, observed Forrest’s training, and copied it.

I feel terrible for griffin, as he will now face all the top competition now based off the win here. But this wasn’t shogun and avid mma fans will testify to this, he stupidly went into this bout with a knee injury so proper cardio training and training in general kinda fell along the wayside and now he has to (thanx to this fight) get surgery. This was not shogun I’m not speaking out my ass watch him simply destroy rampage as well as arona and furthermore size was not a factor here, just watch shogun vs. overeem, overeem is far more talented than griffin as well as being taller and larger.

I rented ppv for pride not ufc too many bullshit fights. They stop way to early. Wanderlei Silva will run thru the light heavyweights in the UFC. I WANT PRIDE BACK. Much more excited. Dana White is smart, Pride wouldve took over mma. There events were always over 100,000 people. UFC Like 15,000 c’mon

Griffin is a gatekeeper for the 205Lber’s with heart, and that’s cool and all but he will never hold the belt for the division. When shogun heals and makes his comeback, Griffin will face(that’s if he’s still in the mix even) the undeniable truth, as well as the rest of america. This fight here was simply Shogun’s ego getting the best of him and underestimating the amount of physical endurance needed to finish a fight. My bet is now that Griffin will more than surely be thrust into matches with the top tier fighters, will experience a devistating reality, as will Dana White, the top contender for the belt is nothing more than “THE GUY WHO BEAT SHOGUN!”

I’m no nutthugger, I don’t give a shit about the whole pride vs. ufc marketing tactics. Just evaluate the facts and come to your own conclusion. I’m positive after watching enough of both Griffin’s and Rua’s previous battles and factor in Rua’s injury that resulted in a lack of training (not to say he wasn’t stupid for not allowing time for thorough training) you’ll have a different perspective of what transpired on the 22nd of september. Shogun is known for above all ENERGY! He doesn’t gas at the end of the 1st round, but even more so he doesn’t gas as bad as he did here, EVER. MARK MY WORDS, AND EVERY TRUE MMA FOLLOWER KNOWS, SHOGUN WILL HOLD THE BELT BY THE END OF 08.

Fighters that have only fought in the UFC should start to migrate to Pride to see if they can compete in that format. It could be just the different ring and slightly different rules that make the difference?

Look, some Pride fighters are doing well in the UFC. But most of them are getting their asses handed to them.

Shogun, in the same night fought two unbelievable fights vs Alistair Overeem (7min), then for the title fought Ricardo Arona (3min) without getting gas’d.

I dont even recognize the Shogun that fought this match.

UFC lacks the STOMP, an awesome vicious attack that only Shogun seemed to leverage, and the balls to stand the fighters up when it gets slow, instead of stopping the fight.

UFC is doing very well getting American viewers to finally join the rest of the world to watch the greatest sport that exists: MMA. That said…

I too wish Pride FC was still around, they had fewer fights, but when they had a lineup, you HAD to see it. The finest fighters in the world were all there, in one night. Fedor, Nog, Hunt, Wandy, Shogun, Arona, Herring, Quinton, Henderson, Gomi, Coleman… I would count the days until the next fight.

I loved the Yellow/Red cards for inaction, standing up the fighters, possible kicks/knees on 4 points, the ring (cant push against the fence), and stomps. UFC has the dumb ring, elbows (create too many cuts), and few good lineups. Only 1 fight in a card is really worth watching most times, that is only like 6 good fights a year. come on! 80% of Pride’s card was awesome, so if they had 4 events .. that is like 30 mind blowingly awesome fights a year.

For everyone who really thinks that the fight between Griffin and Rua was legitimate, I would advise you to go and watch every one of Rua’s fights. Watch out for his footwork, and more importantly, watch out for his technical tactics on the ground….watch out for the patterns in his standup too, like his charge and his kicks to the head. He was not himself with Griffin, and was holding back, and very obviously forfeighted a ton of excellent opportunities to kick Griffin in the head, his foot work was different, his ground game was held back…this is not the Rua I’ve been watching. They are completely different classes of fighters….even with him out of shape, there is no way griffin would have beaten him (or lasted that long) if he was not the TV darling that he is. Please go dig up all of Rua’s fight videos and you will know what i am talking about. Everyone here who understands the technical side of the game can attest to this…

Why would UFC fix the fight? Think about it. Wouldn’t it be great for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter if a past participant won the UFC? I wonder what that will do for the ratings. Why would a primarily middle-american audience care for a foreigner who cannot speak english, and not many people know?

Something is seriously amiss here, very very seriously amiss. Why am i getting the feeling that the UFC is beginning to act like the WWE?

roark silva, you’re fool, plain and simple. The reasons have been given for Shoguns performance, his leg was out. Giffins arm was out. Griffin pushed through it, Shogun didn’t. He lost.

And Matt….PRIDE was purchased by ZUFFA because they were bankrupt and couldn’t pay their fighters anymore. They were about two miracles and an alien invasion away from staying the leader of MMA (which they were at one point).

Both great fighters. They really need to make this a rematch. Shogun and Forrest had a very entertaining fight, even though one guy (Forrest) clearly controlled most of it. I have a feeling Shogun took Forrest too lightly (not to take away from Forrest’s win) and that typically he could’ve gotten the win. Either way, they should make a rematch. Or at least let’s see Shogun vs Henderson while Forrest takes on Jackson.

I don’t care if shogun is better every other time, you fight forrest griffin, and you better bring your A game. If you don’t he will just keep coming at you and try to kill you. Forrest likes to fight, infact he loves to fight, and will probably hold a title in the light heavyweight division. Probably in a year or two, after he trains even more with couture but still he is quality. I suspect that if shogun is as good as everyone says, he will be back for more forrest too. Shogun didn’t have a terrible night, he just didn’t have a fixed fight or have any steroid in him because UFC actually does do drug testing.

ShantdNo Gravatar Says, in 8-3-2008 at 22:50:03 from 76.95.65.76

I can’t believe you people who actually think these fights are fixed or that they win cause they’re on steroids. What drugs are YOU guys on?? Steroid use among non-HWs is virtually unheard of. Non HW fighters can’t afford to do steroids because they have to make weight.

mygif_alt
ShantdNo Gravatar Says, in 8-3-2008 at 22:51:03 from 76.95.65.76

Anyway, I’m with everyone whose actually seen Shogun fight before this bout. The guy is a phenom. He utterly destroyed Rampage and made it look like a sparring session. Just think about that for a second. I’ve seen him destroy a guy Crocop, a big HW, couldn’t KO despite hitting him with everything he had. I think it’s bloody obvious what happened: he showed up in lousy condition. Probably had a very swollen head coming in, something Griffin has no issues with. I don’t buy Shogun’s knee injury claim, there are many ways to train cardio besides running. All that said, it’s remarkable how utterly ineffective Shogun looked even in the 1st round when conditioning had not yet become a factor. Whatever the reason, that wasn’t Shogun in there. A real head scratcher, we’ll probably never know the full story. All that said, full credit must go to Forrest. He heard all the stories and hype about Shogun and didn’t even blink. Amazing set of stones on him, and he always comes PREPARED. Shogun could learn much from him.
