I’m impressed how Varner wouldn’t let Hicks keep him down on about 3 occasions of good take downs. I have to start giving Varner more respect now.

Varner neutralize Hicks, Hicks was fighting like a bull, doesnt use his brain, he had a good chin, but useless, he should step back when being cherry picked by Varner punches, Varner define a champ performance.

That’s what happens when a great wrestler with average stand-up goes up against a great wrestler with a great stand-up. Varner neutralized ever ground trick Hicks has used in the past by preventing him from taking it to the ground. Varner kept the fight where he wanted it and just had to take out a titanium chin.

Hicks is either a smaller version of Marvin Eastman or Gary Coleman on roids. He reminded me of all the times Eastman got rocked while Varner was pummeling him.

People need to remember that Varner wasn’t some chump who got run out of the UFC, he made a conscious decision to got to the WEC as he could be a much bigger fish in that pond and gets a lot more exposure than most UFC lightweights.
In his UFC debut, Varner was well on his way to a UD over Hermes Franca, but he gassed out a little and got caught. He walked right through his next UFC fight in about 90 seconds before going to the WEC.
And Varner is only 23 years old, so if he continues to evolve and keeps delivering big KOs he will definitely be a UFC contender someday.
