@KieranMac – In a way, much of what you see in MMA today was created by Bruce Lee. His Jeet Kune Do, both the martial art and the philosophy, had all the principles that the best MMA artist today try to mimic. He mixed what really worked of each martial art, including judo and jiu-jitsu (so he did have a ground game, he just didn’t use it in his movies because the audience didn’t like it).
His main sources were Wushu, Karate, Chinese Boxing, jiu-Jitsu, English Boxing, and a few elements of Bushido, Aikido, and other Kung Fu styles.
His main idea was the fluidity and adaptability of mixed techniques applied specifically against an opponent, adapting to his strenghs and weaknesses.
You have to keep in mind that he did most of the ground work at a time nobody was thinking about it. If you compare him to today’s MMA champions, he wouldn’t fare that well just because sports technology and MMA training advanced millions of light years in the last 35 years, mostly because of his work.
But if you compare how much he accomplished in such a short life to any of today’s MMA fighters, he is unbeatable.

yeah!!! I knew Shogun had won this fight way before he got in, Lyoto knew that, he looked scared for the first time in the octagon. whoever that saw it live would agree Lyoto didn’t look comfortable. Shogun scared the shit out of him with the 1st beating. Who ever said or thinks shogun won’t retain the belt are seriously stupid. I can’t believe Chuck was listed above Shogun as the best LHW a couple years back when chuck was fighting nobodies. Some of you should find Shoguns fights against lil Nog, Rampage, Arona or Alistair Overeem to know who Shogun is. The UFC finally has a real LHW champion! Rampage, Forrest, and Rashad will never be champions in the ufc as long as any of these two fighters are here.

Also I think You also see a little bit of Bruce’s grapping in, Enter the Dragon, Its actually very mma, they used kempo gloves for sparing which actually influenced the modern day mma glove. If you watch is documentary, there is a whole section on how he was working with the Idea of MMA and sparring long before it existed.

yes, bruce lee is back in the day, and it’s just movies but give him credit for being one of the first, if not THE first, mixed martial artists. lee studied multiple martial arts, took what he thought was the best of each style and created his own martial art, jeet kune do. he was a pioneer for sure.

Man, this is such a bitter sweet finish, as much as I like Shogun, I’m a huge fan of Machida. Part of me is glad he finally got his 1st loss so people will hop off the band-wagon. It’s funny I can already see from the posts that people are calling his scared to fight and running from his opponents again, just like before he was KOing people; when in reality this fight was going blow for blow with Machida getting the better hits in until he got caught.

I was sort of hoping the old elusive Machida would return, trying to bang with Shogun is a mistake that cost him big.

@ace Are you kidding? Shogun pressed the action and hit Machida several times. Machida had 2 takedowns and a knee strike. That’s what you call dominating. Shogun kicked Machida’s ass. That 1st punch stunned Machida, but Shogun followed it up and beat the crap out of him. And as far as all of you talking about Bruce Lee, he would be almost 70 years old now, so it’s stupid to talk about how well he would’ve done in the UFC and you can’t tell how good his ground game was by watching a movie. Those scenes were set up and choreographed. It doesn’t matter how well he looked in a movie. What matters is if he was put in a rear naked choke by a modern day mma fighter in a real fight would he be able to get out. And as I said he would be turning 70 this year so it is impossible to know.

what a let down…i was expecting a long grueling fight. this fight didnt prove much, machida was winning the round before he got clipped. the factors that stuck out in my mind were machida was bulkier, i think he mustve done some power training (which i think may have not been the best strategy)…he seemed sluggish and actually a little winded before he was knocked out…but machida tends to look tired when he fights anyways. he flops his wrists and breathes with his mouth open. the other thing to think about would be if shogun wouldve been too aggressive in the opening rounds and gassed later. oh well, shogun showed once again that pride fighters were always the best, i hope a good recovery for machida and that he doesnt lose his confidence for future fights. now im excited to see some other matchups in the best division. shogun/silva, shogun/rampage, rampage/machida, ect ect.

Shogun was beating Lyoto even before the ko sequence. He was pressing the action, landing some of the kicks and rocked Machida on a hand sequence on the fence that made “The Dragon” look for the take down. Once they got there, on both times, Machida didn’t do any damage and was on the verge of giving away the top position due to a sweep. In my eyes it was a complete blow out in Rua’s favor, but that doesn’t say, all of a sudden, Machida sucks. He has some good fights under his belt also and let’s not forget he was the heavy favorite in their first encounter, but in both fights, the once reckless shogun, made up strategies that took the former champ out of his game.

Machida is a great fighter, But i think rua is a tadd better.

Rogan needs to just stop doing commentary right away. Any time he says somebody has a “good shot” they get knocked out within seconds. And a lot of times, the exact opposite of what he says will happen will happen, like “He’s rocked!” and then the guy who he says is “rocked” ends up connecting with some great shots against the other guy within seconds.

The only good or decent fight the ufc can offer to Shogun is A. Silva, most of us know what he’ll do to Rampage or Rashad. Maybe Thiago could give a better fight, they both have a similar style (aggressive, in your face, very powerful and with huge leg kicks)And it did seemed like Lyoto tried to bulk up a little but I don’t think strength was the answer here.
