I watched this fight a couple of times to see what really happened and to form my own opinion. I came to the conclusion that Machida did win. Like he said in this interview, all Shogun did was kick him in the legs, while Machida was going for the vital points and trying to finish the fight.
Even when Shogun took him to the ground, no damage was done and Machida was never in any real danger of being finished. Like we’ve heard time and time again that you can’t leave it in the judges hands. Also, proir to this fight, Machida had never lost a single round, so he obviously knows what judges are looking for, and used that knowledge to his advantage.
I still really like Machida and I think the rematch will be explosive.

I actually had nothing against Machida before, just know Shogun would win (if the old Shogun was back – witch he prooved that he was). But by just sitting there and lieing, claiming he was superior – just shows bad sportsmanship and makes a lot of people angry – even his own fans, who admitted that Shogun was superior.

Just hope the re-fight will be soon. Really want to see Shogun get his belt.

i thought shogun won…until i watch it over again and again…

then i could really see the fight

rounds 1,2,3,4 machida, round 5 close call. (actually it was all close, but machida won by 1/2 a point or 1 point in the first 4 rounds).

Niv Says, in 10-31-2009 at 12:29:47 from 174.1.241.133

By the way judge Cecil People explained why he scored the fight the way he did, and it’s an explanation into the absurd if you guys can find it.

He basically stated he felt that Machida’s strikes did more damage and seeing that he did more damage he awarded him the fight. (That’s in a nut shell).

Now Rua was given no medical suspension, but Machida was given a 60 day no contact suspension for injuries sustained in the fight.

Even by the judges own stupid criteria he has proven himself wrong.

Idmir you r ignorant, shogun didnt just hit him with leg kicks, as anyone can see his lip still hasnt healed and he will probably have that scar the rest of his life.shogun busted him up, and lyoto wasnt being elusive he was running. they used 2 spar back in the day and I think lyoto knew that if shogun was the same guy he was then that shogun could beat him so he didnt engage him really like he has done his past few opponents, this is why sparring partners dont like 2 fight each other, if a guy roughs u up in training it can put fear in you. lyoto hasnt sure he could go toe 2 toe with shogun so he didnt.

IMO Machida did win the fight. You cant say that that was trully the shogun of old. correct me if i’m wrong but thats not the balls to the walls shogun i remember. He tried winning with leg kicks! All in all i gave rounds 2,3,4 to machida for constently trying to go in for the finish. shogun had his chances to finish and didnt try to end it as much as i feel he should have.

i know everyone is on shogun’s nuts, saying the old shogun is back, and while he did look a lot better than he did against coleman, all he did that whole fight was leg kicks and body shots. he didn’t try to finish the fight at all. when machida went after him he backed away. if this was anyone other than shogun you clowns would be tearing him apart. and you know it.

I was a Machida fan and I also like Shogun, but I actually was angry for shogun too like everybody else, MMA has to be honest sport. if anyone knows anything about MMA they would know that Shogun won that fight with out a doubt and in my opinion it wasn’t even a close fight/decision shogun Won every single round, almost every shot of Shogun were connecting and they were much more crisp and powerful, its a shame that a fighter has to work so hard and win the fight then some idiots (most likely paid judges) have to make a dumb decisions against a fighter and let him down, this stuff discourages the fighters sadly

Well said Niv and JJ.
For you Machida fans did you not see how Shogun clinched and knee the hell out of Machida’s legs. How about those flying knees(I guess you miss those too!!!). How about in the 2nd round when Shogun stopped Machidas weak flurry with a powerful right and how he grabbed on for dear life and again Shogun knee the hell out of him. Oh did I mention the million leg kicks he delivered. How about when he Elbowed Machida on several occasions!!! Should I go on??? He did more than enough to win the fight. Supposedly Machida was untouchable but Shogun when Elliot Ness on His A$$. Who suffered damage and won’t be training after the fight??? I heard Shogun was in the gym the next day!!!

michael Says, in 10-31-2009 at 15:57:23 from 70.63.159.33

Here is why Shogun lost.

If Shogun wants to learn how to win a belt, all he has to do is look at how Lyoto won it from Rashad. There is no double standard. If Lyoto had just tried to out-point Rashad with leg kicks, he would’ve lost that decision too. MMA is not *meant* to be a points competition. Even Lyoto knows this.

The goal in an MMA fight is to show how to stop the other guy, to show what it takes to clearly win a fight. If a decision *has* to happen, so be it… but a decision win should not be the fighters’ goal. It is obvious that Shogun’s strategy and goal here was to merely survive 25 minutes while out-pointing Lyoto with leg kicks. Shogun’s goal was a decision win, and *that* is why he lost. It was obvious to the judges he was trying to just squeak out a decision. He wasn’t trying to finish the fight.

It is a good thing the judging is left to professionals, because if all of the whiny Shogun nut-huggers out here were the judges then from now on title fights would all turn into boring leg-kick points competitions.

Machida said he fought and beat many guys like Shogun’s style so what was his excuse for not being able to finish him??? Shogun adapted and improved his style in the fight to the point where he made Machida pay for everything he tried. Shogun’s style is better than Machida’s. There is no excuse for the Dragon if he can’t defend a leg kick. Maybe he will come out like Shogun in their next fight and go toe to toe to see who the true champ is!!!

rugbern Says, in 10-31-2009 at 16:23:34 from 67.184.144.95

BTW, it looked like in the first round Machida injured his hand trying to defend a powerful round house to his body with his hand. Cmon you dont block a kick with your hand. He should’ve learned something from the Cung Le vs Shamrock fight!!!

geto Says, in 10-31-2009 at 16:35:17 from 74.198.148.46

Rua won… It was a close fight, and the only reason he didn’t go in for the kill and continuously worked the body, is because that’s all he could do. Machida runs away and the judges should punish that. I still like Machida and respect his skill, but he needs to finish with that style or he should lose. You can’t run all fight and win on points, it’s bullshit.

IDMR well said i agree wit you and everyone else who saw Machida winning that fight.Machida won the fight clearly, yes it was close but when it comes to looking at who scored more points anyone who is unbiased will see Machida won…head shots score more than leg kicks. Whats strange about this is before the fight most people were saying Machida will KO Shogun and only a few hard core mma fans like myself of course knew that would not happen.I knew all along that the fight would be tight, Shogun is such a well conditioned and experienced fighter that you cant take him out that easily. And now after the fight these dimwits who just became mma fans a few years ago start saying shogun won, what the hell do they know? Come the rematch expect alot of fire works it will be very, very messy.

Shoguns game plan for this fight was to punish Machidas legs and body and then while Machida was week he would go for the take down and finish the fight. Shogun punished the legs and body but could do nothing grappling wise machida made shogun look like a fool every time he went for a take down. Machida landed heavy knees and counter strikes in the first round, same in the 2nd round personally i think the third round was a tie and i give rounds 4 and 5 to shogun i think shoguns lack of ability to do anything grappling gave Machida the fight. personally i think it was too close to call.

The Black Swordsman Says, in 10-31-2009 at 20:10:57 from 174.146.37.170

Shogun won the fight period. Machida landed less strikes , he suffered more visible damage to his face, legs and ribs , he also looked hurt during the course of the fight unlike Shogun, he was never the aggressor , and he’s not confident that he won. He looks like A-Rod talking to Katie Couric everytime he talks about winning the fight. 4 rounds – 1 Shogun.

mygif
Niv Says, in 10-31-2009 at 20:15:56 from 174.1.241.133

Mike I can’t agree with you at all.

Shogun looks like he’s regained his health and his conditioning obviously followed.

Did Shogun fight his balls to the walls style, no! Does that in itself mean Shogun isn’t back, of course not.

Every Machida fan and non fan for that matter knows Machida is a good fighter. Not everyone likes the way he fights, but it’s no secret that if you’re too aggressive he’ll beat you. Everyone saw his previous two fights and both fighters played Machida’s game and lost.

So if I’m correct now Shogun is obviously damned if I do, damned if I don’t here. What he did was put together a good strategy to counter Machida’s counter style. Shogun played it to perfection, he out struck Machida and out countered him and fought a very disciplined fight.

For this Machida is given credit, and yet Shogun who outdid him is being criticized for it.

Sorry, but I call that hypocritical.

Shogun proved what very few believed before this fight, he’s the best LHW fighter in the world still.

Here are the SIMPLE FACTS:

1. There were NO successful takedowns.
2. There were NO knockdowns.
3. There were No good submission attempts.
4. The pace of the fight was slow and steady. Either fighter was totally gassed out, so stamina was an major issue.
5. These TWO warriors let the Judges decide that fight.

This fight was a Chess match without the CHECKmate.

LESSON: Don’t do enough to squeak a win. You must truly dominate your opponent. And leave ever ounce of energy and aggression in the octagon.

shogun has not enough of a technical game to beat machida in a rematch, everything that happened in the first fight that went well for shogun will not happen again, and if you can call yourself a shogun fan then you should know his style is fairly simple to figure out. he fights like a barbarian when he was the “old shogun” he just goes in aggressively for the kill. if he does that with machida next time cuz he gets frustrated with not landing kicks as much hes going to get dropped like 3rd period french. end of story he let the judges decide his fate in the first fight because the truth of the matter is it was impossible for him to finish the fight and you all know that. he couldnt land but 1 significant blow for 25 minutes… give machida some credit. you guys over look things because of leg kicks. if you were a coach would you tell your fighter for the belt to just go in there and throw leg kicks then let the judges give you the belt?

You guys are killing me with some of this stuff.

Shogun isn’t technical enough, Shogun had no takedowns, no submission attempts, Shogun barely beat a 60 year old Coleman and Machida’s going to kill Shogun next fight.

You guys are all insnane!

First of all Coleman isn’t 60, he’s a natural HW (ex UFC champ) and he was Shogun’s first fight post two knee surgeries, but I’m sure keyboard warriors can over come two major knee surgeries no problem. No one seems to have any explanation for Coleman beating Bonner either we’ll just look the other way on that one.

Secondly, no takedowns and submissions, well if I’m correct Machida never went for one single take down and made no submission attempts the entire fight. All he did was defend takedowns as he was completely taken out of his game and never came close once to actually going for the kill. Doesn’t the champ actually have an obligation to engage as well to keep his title?

Why would you give credit to someone for simply back pedaling and eating shots while doing it all fight long?

Shogun quite simply beat Machida handily and if Machida makes the mistake of changing his style and is more aggressive next fight, he’ll get ko’d because he can’t stand and bang with Shogun and he knows that.

Last night I watched the mma show and Big John MaCarthy thought Shogun clearly won that fight, Randy Couture gave it 4-1 in rounds and basically every news outlet and mma magazine that had someone in attendance covering the fight saw it that way without exception. Obviously there’s something wrong here when three idiot judges don’t get it right and that’s why people are pissed.

As Couture, MaCarthy, Wanderlei Silva and others have stated, the crime here is that two men trained for months for this moment and the winner was robbed of all his hard work.

Personally I can’t wait for the re-match so all you deluded Machida fans can watch the running man get ko’d, and we’ll listen to how he actually wins when the audio is off again.

Thanks niv for your last posting, so true!

I mean, like he said a lot of fighters (if they are not A. Silva, who is Lyoto’s buddy) think that Shogun won, 99% of the media think Shogun won and on MMATKO 75% think that Shogun won. So you can either go with Cecil Peoples and claim that everyone thinking Rua won is absolutely uneducated when it comes to MMA and how fights are scored, or you could consider the possibility that something with that decision went horribly wrong.

Yes, we have to accept the technical fact that Lyoto was declared the winner. On the other hand – sound or no sound for that matter – it’s a clear fact that Shogun had control of the octagon and landed more and cleaner shots than Lyoto. Well, the retards called “judges” can call the fight any way they want and there’s nothing we can do about it.

But PLEASE! How can you claim that getting a decision is not what MMA was all about? You go ahead and tell me it should be a knockout everytime? Who’s the ‘uneducated’ fan here? MMA is a regulated sport. There are frickin rules, and if you win a fight within the rules you win a f****** belt! There is NO rule saying “You have to beat the champ to be the camp (yadayadayada). Poor excuse for a bad call! You guys can enjoy whatever the f you want (I personally can enjoy a tactical fight going to decision any day) but that doesn’t make it a rule!

In Europe soccer’s a big thing. I’m not gonna compare MMA and soccer, but just to make my point clear: Italians are known for playing “Catenaccio” = scoring a lousy goal and then just trying to hold possession of the ball and defend by all means. F***** boring shit, every soccer fan hates that kind of stuff. But it’s within the rules. If they win it might not be the most glorious thing, but it’s a win. Same goes to beating a champ in MMA, even through a ‘close’ decision.

I’m not going to whine about the misjudgement that happend on October 24. It is what it is. I just think you Machida supporters argue on VERY thin ground.

Looking forward to the rematch. Hope there will be justice and Shogun tears Lyoto apart.
(How anyone can call Lyoto a “classy guy” by now puzzles me the most. If he had the heart and mindset of a champion (Randy Couture Style) he wouldn’t be sitting there and talking sh*t he doesn’t even believe himself. He should have handed the belt to Rua right after his undeserving hand went up that night…”

It’s amazing the people who out themselves in showing their lack of MMA knowledge in saying Machida won that fight. Anyone, and I mean ANYONE worth their MMA salt KNOWS Shogun won that fight. Even with the utter garbage that is the UFC scoring system, Shogun STILL won the fight. If you honestly, seriously think Machida won that fight you are either an MMA noob, or a blind Machida hugger. It was a close fight, not doubt, but not nearly close enough to not know who won. Shogun won regardless of the “judges” decisions.

And just let me add: You are right, Shogun could not finish the fight. Which is not a shame, since Machida is one of the best out there. But he made him his bitch. That should suffice for becoming champion :)

What is all the discussion about Machida clearly won. I can even prove it, go to the end of the fight where they announce the winner.

Shogun didn’t loose, but he wasn’t able to win.

All those kicks for nothing. If it was an ordinary fight he could be the winner, but that belt needs more effort to get.

Machida shouldn’t be the belt’s holder anymore and now he must grant that back. Doesn’t matter what the judges said, but all the public opinion.

Every champion needs the audience recognition… til then Machida will always have a doubt as a last name.

I think a lot of people see Shogun as the winner because Machida didn’t look so dominate as he usually does. Instead, Shogun was just as good as Machida, making his [Machida] mystique gone.

I didn’t see Shogun winning the fight, but I don’t see Machida winning all rounds. I’d say it was pretty close to a draw, but in any case the edge always goes to the champion, regardless who it is. (rampage being the exception)

Shogun definitely showed what works against Machida, but needed to follow that up with trying to finish the fight. I think that is what made him lose the fight. It didn’t seem like he had any killer instinct, despite figuring out Machida.
