Great fight. Alves is a tough dude, but Koscheck really showed that he is also very tough. He took a lot of shots and kept coming.

Alves deserves a title shot a lot more than bj in my opinion. the only peope BJ has beat since coming back to lightweight is joe stevenson and sean sherk. although those were impressive victories i do not think that BJ is that superior of a fighter to move up in a weight class and just get a title shot because he is a lightweight champ that has only successfully defended his title against one person (sean sherk)
thiago alves on the other hand has knocked out a lot of people and i think he has a really good chance in beating GSP.
dont get me wrong, i like BJ penn, he is a god on the ground and his stand up is just as good as his jiu jitsu. but i think the ufc needs to build him up more in the welterweight division before he gets a shot at GSP.

Koscheck might not have been able to take Thiago down, but you can bet GSP will…the only question is will GSP eat a knee during one of the attempts….as athletic as Koscheck is, and as talented, GSP is still on another level…should be a great fight, and I’d much rather see GSP vs. Thiago than GSP vs. BJ Penn..

Great fight. I feel that BJ shouldnt be able to jump into a title fight with GSP. I know it will be a big money maker for UFC yet I feel GSP should defend his title with guys in his own weight class. Silva hasnt gone straight to 205 and took on the champ. I don’t thinks it right and Alves should get his shot before BJ.

I was shocked at how dominate Alves looked. Even though his TD defense has been excellent since the Karo fight (and maybe earlier), I thought Kos’ would put him down and control him for most of the fight. He definitely deserves to fight GSP, but I guess he’ll wait in line as Penn satisfies his giant ego by moving up after ONE 155 title defense. Anderson defends his title against seemingly outclassed opponents, but not “the immortal” Baby J. I hope he gets humbled by GSP!

I’m not a fan of Diego the spiritual nut, but Diego the fighter is possibly of the most exciting and aggressive fighters in the UFC. Just check out his fights against Nick Diaz and Karo and his knockouts of Luigi and Riggs and revisit your “Diego is a pussy” comment.
Remember that he was fighting a brutal staff infection when he fought Kos and was the much busier fighter in his loss to Fitch- constantly looking for submissions. I know I’ll be flamed for this, but I truly believe that with his mental toughness and aggressiveness, Diego could hold his own against GSP in an epic match.

WHAT! First of all GSP will get KO’d by Alves.
Second, BJ is the man but he is so hyped it’s insane. I love BJ Penn but damn man. He totally gassed against Hughes and he fought to the death with GSP. He may finally be as good as he’s supposed to be. That being said, we’ll see what he does against GSP if that happens. If he doesn’t dominate GSP then it’s just the same old BJ. I don’t understand how BJ gets to have a title shot moving up and Anderson Silva doesn’t. Makes no sense. I think if you move up, you should start from scratch just like anyone else; it’s a different kind of game.
GSP is much better than BJ and Koscheck, but he tends to be careless (remember Serra). Alves is not as good as GSP, but he could win the fight if he takes advantage of that.
Someone mentioned that Thiago is getting too big for this class, but have you seen GSP in the last fight? He is becoming a monster! If he can keep his speed and flexibility with that amount of muscle mass, he can definitely start to look for an upper class title…

I agree. Alves deserves the title shot more than BJ, But BJ is a better opponent than Alves. Kos could have won that fight if he transitioned. There were several times in the pocket where KOS did very well and then stayed standing instead of using Alves clam defense as a way to take him down. GSP won’t be so kind. That’s what makes him such a bad opponent. GSP will engage on the feet and the second you are ready to counter his strikes he is at your knee taking you to the ground…

I cant wait for GSP and Thiago to fight. Thiago earned a lot of respect from me after this fight. I hoestly do not like either koscheck or alves, but alves simply destroyed kos. I do not care what anybody ses, what any fight analyst, or any nuthugger ses; GSP is going destroy Alves. GSP is better at every aspect. His striking is crisp, takedowns crisp, take down deffense crisp, and stanima crisp. GSP beat BJ already so I do not have to hear about Alves any more.
