wow….what can you say? I think koscheck underestimated his striking and was waiting too long for him to counter. I think he should have been more agressive. His wrestling is good enough to fend off paulo’s jits if it went to the ground plus it’s mma he could have hit him to escape or to pass. Impressive for paulo we’ll have to wait to see if it was a fluke. Sure felt like one. No real comments on the doctors stoppage could have gone either way really just depends on the ref you have in the cage.

Come on, he was still wobbly after the fight was over. He was clearly finished. He wouldn’t have been able to protect himself.

Seems like they stopped a lot of fights kinda quick this event. I wonder if the athletic commission is cracking down because they’re concerned about all the brutal GnP that results in guys having seizures on the canvas. Could be a sign the sport is changing.

Just watched on the big screen, the referee saved Koscheck’s brain. He was out and did NOT recover. If Paulo hit him again that would be a brain injury for sure…

I have to agree that was a good stop. Koscheck was definitely knocked out on the way down. He did recover when he hit the ground, but he is VERY lucky the other fighter didnt pounce on him, as most others wouldve. He still had some fight in him but the right thing was done.

A little early on first look, but Kos was hurt bad. Kind of too quick, they should have let Kos at least defend himself. He was hurt in the Alves fight twice and recovered. Terrible ref.

it was a good stoppage..if kos wasn’t really out, he should not have fallen that way..thiago slowly came over because he felt the fight was already over..in the way we see it,thiago might look like he didn’t seal it, but he is the one fighting and he knows best..props to thiago for making the right decision of not throwing unnecessary punches

Paulo should have straight up pounded on him just so the Koscheck lovers and Koscheck himself wouldn’t whine about early stoppage. That was perfect stoppage.

Kos is the most over-rated fighter ever.

Kos was out after the uppercut. The left hand sealed the deal. Only when his head bounced off the ground like a basketball did he wake up. Ref did his job by protecting the fighter.

Koshcheck should quit bitching. He got his ass SAVED by that ref. Paulo could have came down with the hammer and really done a number to his dome. I bet the crowd would have cheered for that one…

That was a bad stoppage. The commentator said dude didn’t pounce. . . He wasn’t going to anyway. . . It’s dudes fault for choosing not to finish and thinking Kos was done. He’s lucky the ref stopped it before he found out he made a big mistake.

Agree a hundred percent. People that boo annoy me. Meatheads should just stick to watching boxing. Japanese fans are way more respectful as a whole. I’ve never heard a boo from a japanese crowd.

The refs are turning into whimp outs(What are they being told).
I thought this was Ultimate fighting, not ultimate fast stoppage. Let it go at least to be finished on the ground. Many guys get knocked down, give them a chance to recover.
WTF! Ive been sucker punched, fell down, got up and then KTFO of the other guy.
Its never over until they cant defend and KOS was never out, just dazed and still had his hands up and was recovering.
F all the early stoppage fans here. This isnt a normal sport. If they cant handle one extra punch on the ground to finalize it then they shouldnt be there anyway.

Thiago showed some great sportsmanship by not delivering what would have been permanently damaging and unecessary bombs to the brain of Kos. Most fighters would have pounced on their foe and continued the assault. Thiago took a big risk by not jumping on a fighter with the skill and ability to recover of a Koscheck. Thiago and the ref did the right thing and it didn’t backfire on either of them. I just hope this isn’t a complete fluke and Thiago goes on to do great things in the UFC.

Biggest upset of 2009 so far hands down.Kos needs to start trying to take people down instead of trying to strike with them like he’s Roy Jones or something.Thiago beat Kos kinda like Matt Serra beat GSP,he caught him with an unexpected combonation that landed and shocked the world….the thing is Kos is beyond Thiago’s level which leads me to the Matt Serra GSP comparison….and if Kos had a rematch with Thiago Kos would win for a 100% fact.

You can’t really fault the ref here. But, the fact that Thiago did not follow up at all would’ve allowed Koscheck to recover. It’s pleasing to see Koscheck lose though.

Fair stoppage by the Ref. I think he saw that Kos was out, but it was emphisised by Thaigo’s lack of attacking. I think it would have been better for him to go in for the kill.

I think it needs to be considered though that fighters are fighters, not average people, they want to fight. Nog vs Herring is a good examplem that would have been stopped in this case. Nog went on to win, and win handily. Food for thought. I am a long time MMA fan, and certainly not bloodthirsty, but I do think fighters need to be ‘finished’ a little more than when the often too-eager-to-stop refs are in charge.

I’m not a fan of Koscheck’s but even I thought it was a premature stoppage. I understand that his eyes roll in the back of his head for like 2 seconds but he was still in a defensive position – PT should have sealed the deal instead of that overprotective ref jumping in and stopping the fight too early. This is MMA, not Boxing – Brain Damage is more likely to occur in a back and forth fight not an early TKO attempt.

Looking at it again, I think there was a chance that Kos could have recovered. Either way, it’s in the books.

Ok look, I hate saying this but Joe Rogan has a point. Kos’s eyes rolled back, and he didn’t know where he was. Thiago would have rained down 3 or 4 more power shots and then it would have been a clear stoppage. However, at that point in time, it appeared that Kos was done. The ref’s job is to protect the fighter from UNNECESSARY damage, and that’s exactly what he did. Lucky punch, good stoppage, too bad for Kos.

Kos is a puffy hair-cutted bitch. It was great seeing him get knocked out and he was out. Thiago would hit him more when he was down if the ref hadn’t stepped in.

Thats when the ref’s job is important. sure it was a flash KO, he recovered two seconds later, a second after he would have caught another blast to the suckin noggin completely unprotected. This is just one of those stoppages that can be argued either way. It wasn’t like he was shut off like Nate Quarry vs Rich Franklin. And he did start to go into a gaurd position right after he hit the canvass,so he was still conscience of the fact he was in a fight. Also there isn’t just one referee in the UFC so you are going to get different outcomes to those types of scenarios. In this sport you need to be hyper aggresive when it comes to finishing fights. Thiago should have jumped on him and left no doubt in Kos’ mind that he’d just got KTFO!

There’s something a lot of you aren’t understanding, Thiago did knock him to the ground, unfortunately, he was too slow to finish, he gave Kos plenty of time to recover, and Kos had recovered by the time the ref covered him. It was a horrible stoppage.
