Jon Jones vs Chael Sonnen Coaching ‘The Ultimate Fighter 17,’ Fighting On April 27

The UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones (16-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) and occasional middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen (28-12-1 MMA, 6-5 UFC) will be the coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter 17″ on FX.

The coach name releases, as well as an April 27 fight date, today were confirmed by the Los Angeles Times.

With his new coaching duties, Sonnen will no longer fight Forrest Griffin (19-7 MMA, 10-5 UFC) at UFC 155 in December.

“TUF 17″ filming begins Oct. 29, and the show then debuts on FX in January. The 17th edition of the UFC’s long-running reality series is expected to feature middleweight and light-heavyweight fighters. Open tryouts for the tournament-based competition and show recently drew more than 120 UFC hopefuls.

Jones and Sonnen will serve as head coaches of opposing teams. As with past seasons of “TUF,” their coach-vs.-coach fight will headline a pay-per-view event soon after the series’ 12-week run on FX.

Now, that is an interesting fight. I mean, I know who I’m betting on, but it will be fun to watch. That should also be interesting to look at their coaching strategies and watch them interact personally on the show. I’m sure trash-talking wil abound.

Sonnen doesn’t deserve this. Hasn’t had a fight at 205 in YEARS. Do rankings mean nothing, now? Just “fun fights” to look forward to.

Call me old fashioned, but I like watching #1 contenders fight champions, and by that I also mean in the same weight class. What a slap in the face to the UFC’s top 20 LHWs.

As much as I denied the comparisons to WWE this is exactly what they are doing and it is just for ratings. Good choice for TUF to make the celebrity “coaches” Chael and JJ though. I’m sure that will bring in a higher viewership for TUF PPV buys to their 1 sided fight.

who actually deserves a shot? hendo didn’t even really deserve it to begin with.. he is just a big name who gets rag dolled by mediocre wrestlers.
glover is kind of a threat to jones but glover wants rampage.
gustoffson and shogun are fighting… if shogun wins, he’ll probably turn down a shot. if gustoffson wins and gets a shot, he’d get killed. he’s way too sloppy for jones and has no wrestling or ground game that we’re aware of.
chael atleast has somewhat of a chance of getting jones down.
you guys are all rediculous. jones is going to own every the ufc puts in front of him in an embarrassing way… when someone has cleaned out a mediocre division the way jones has, rankings aren’t really considered.

This wasn’t even worth a comment, but Zuffa announcing this right after they reported the lowest ratings for TUF ever? Smells really bad. Also, using 2 of the 5 top selling fighters to “save” TUF send even a worse message.

Based on the reaction I’ve seen in other sites, either this will bomb even worse than this season or it will save TUF ratings on the cost of UFC’s credibility. I am not sure if Zuffa realizes that they are sending the message that their little reality show that is more of a companion to the brand is actually more important than the brand. Anyway, who cares?

not saying i agree with this match up but i think it all came down to how quickly chael jumped on the chance to fight Jones to save ufc 153. Dana was probably impressed so he thought he deserves a shot. personally, considering Chael was such a sloppy middle weight I think he should have to make the ranks first. but it is what it is. but Chael being such an aggressive fighter he will definitely bring a fight to Jones!

It’s good for business and ratings, but lame for the serious fight fan. I think the TUF series is mainly a way to stall for time while trying to find a real contender for Jones to fight. Perhaps the UFC is hoping to make Jones-Silva happen afterwards, which would then give the LHW division a couple of solid years to develop some new talent.

Just like Showtime with Strikeforce, Fox has a lot of input as to the whole TUF franchise. If they wanted this match up then Zuffa was going to obliged them. That is how the damn business works. Its about PPV buys and viewer counts so quit whining about it wrong they are fighting and Chael doesn’t deserve the fight. More visibility UFC gets more all fighters under the banner gets paid. Personally I prefer fights where I cant easily predict the outcome. However everyone will watch this including me and to be honest it should be very entertaining with Chael involved. Just wish Zuffa would keep the focus on actual sport as it seems to be shifting to Entertainment.

“I think with the move off Friday and the casting, we have very, very big expectations for ratings.”

And with that being said once again–no use bitches bout how wrong it is…Fox is Zuffa’s silent partner. That is why Jones vs. Sonnen will be happening (unless one of them ends up injured. Sidenote: Chael DO NOT work out with Hendo–not a good look right now son.)
