Retired veteran MMA referee “Big” John McCarthy and MMA broadcaster Mauro Ranallo have been chosen as the men on the mics for Affliction’s debut event.
Affliction: Banned takes place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. on July 19. The preliminary card airs live on FSN before the main card starts on pay per view.
Big John and Mauro will sit ringside for the year’s biggest fight card card. The main event will feature ex-PRIDE champ Fedor Emelianenko vs past UFC champion Tim Sylvia.

that’s gonna be a great commentary duo. Even though BJM isn’t a fighter, he has as much MMA experience as almost anyone out there. Mauro has a good voice for play by play announcing. I’m lookin forward to this.

Uh…gummo, anyone of the guys in the line-up are good enough to fight in the UFC; as a matter-of-fact, one of them left as the current heavyweight title-holder. And i agree Skinner, it is good business strat: hire some big names on your first crack as an MMA league while the market is still hot and fresh. UFC is an iconic brand, but not the only one or the best.

Big John was a ref for like 70 plus ufc events and then he quits and goes over to affliction? Was ufc dumb enough not to pick him as an annoucer after his retirement?

No offense split vision - But Couture didn’t leave the UFC to sign with Affliction and still hasn’t signed with Affliction, and maybe wont even sign. he’s still under contract with the UFC and I think should honour his remaining fights, I am a huge Couture fan, but I am sure he has his reasons.

None taken Dezigner- and mmafan82- apparently interim champion means that the person currently holding the title (Couture) did not lose it in a bout; he lost it due to undisclosed circumstances/contract dispute/what-have-you. Big Nog took it from Silvia b/c Couture was not there to accept the challenge from Nog. to guess who, i dont if your a fighter or athlete but one of the biggest challenges for a combat athlete is makeing the weight, but that’s why your paid to do it because it’s not easy and if you know that cant make it, dont fight. I dont care if you have a “sprained ankle” or not there are other ways to cut the weight that’s why you have professionals helping you with nutrition or what not especially if you come from “the best fighting camp in the world”. thiago is a great fighter but he does not deserve a title shot after not making the weight. that’s crazy 4 pounds that’s not even trying to make weight. and matt hughes could off not taken the fight but he is the toughest champion fighter this sport has ever seen. so go keep kissing thiago’s a** and the way tell him to make weight next!

winn obviously you dont know enough about cutting weight…both in wrestling and mma i cut as much as 13 pounds five days prior to a match…that means those days were lost to cut weight(running in sweatsuits, working out in full gear, etc) from alves.

that’s the stupid way to lose the weight. what are you trying to say that’s the only way to cut weight give me a break! I wrestled in highschool and college and Im a fighter as well, so don’t tell me I dont know about cutting weight i wrestled 133 my whole college career and had it down to a science. and if I got an ankle injury you think that I would sit on the side line or any wrestler would sit out? thats the difference between wrestling background fighters and other backgrounds, we dont make excuses just hard wrestler work ethic.
