That was a nice throw. What made him quit? The way he landed on his back?

I heard a bunch of morons who claimed that Joe “faked the injury” or “played it off too much like he was hurt more than he was” but Joe has ALWAYS had back problems and he was CLEARLY in pain. a throw like that can paralyze someone if done correctly, so people need to back off. i take judo, jujitsu, and kempo and it’s no joke man. Joe Riggs is still a great fighter and I respect him after all this kid has gone through. hope to see ya back Joe.

Joe did throw that match, I mean geez fellas ….fellas Joe riggs may have back problems, but the way he was fighting it was a lucky throw. Randy couture still fought gonzaga after I think breaking his arm (correct me if I’m wrong) also Time silvia still wanted to fight frank Mir after his arm was broken. Joe riggs just gave up so I’m giving up I hate you Joe riggs, and I hope my new pet alligator fluffy would devour your corpse……. Okay I didn’t mean that like they way I said it but Joe could of gone the distance injury or not he could of done it.

he said in the clinch he felt a tingling pain shoot from his back down to his legs and the throw just made it worse. either way he would have lost and not been able to continue due to his back. dont fight with injuries or get a better chiropracter for the fans sake because i thought this would be the best fight of the night and the whole card turned out to be BORING AS HELL.

MMA soldier, you are moron. First that old man post that I read of yours, and now this. Joe Riggs is tough as nails. The man used to be 300 lbs and is an incredibly heavy handed fighter with a massive list of injuries. He needed this win to build momentum in his career and for you to say that he threw it is preposterous. The fact of the matter is, that fight was make or break and sadly, Joe broke and it’s going to take a lot of doing to get him back in the game, if ever at all. Look at him cringe in the clinch, something is fucked, and according to richard it was his back. Learn more about MMA before you talk and disrespect these fighters. For your information that was more than 300 lbs coming down on his already injured back, so get real.

MMA Soldier, an injured back is often 100 times more painful then a broken arm. Seriously, there is almost no comparison. As much as a broken arm hurts, when you have herniated discs and that kind of stuff going on often the injury is debilitating. You can’t help it, the back just refuses to work and the pain is absolutely unbearable.
If you break the wrong bone or vertebrae in your back you *die* bro. When is the last time you heard of someone dying from a broken arm?

A bad throw (not bad for him, bad for me) was what ended my short competitive career (broken rib, torn muscle and herniated disc), and looked alot like that one. Joe, I FEEL for you; Devela, nice throw; “MMA Soldier”… come on… swim with someone who knows their shit and take a few like that. Not everyone’s Fedor.

Joe riggs beat Nick Sanchez and even Herb Dean! He’s well respected in my books , but my comments are only for humor not for bullshit….. so hmm… how does it taste?…Viking, jasond, and matt. you know the sweat off of Joe riggs balls. You got a good taste because by the way you are defending looks like you had a nice liquidy salty flavor to your comments. I love MMATKO!

MMA Soldier, you said, “correct me if I’m wrong.” So don’t take things so personally brother, it is just a fight analysis. Also, your fascination with Joe Rigg’s genitals in your lame attempt at humor is a bit queer. Not that I’m trying to judge you, but this is probably not the right forum for you to describe the taste of his balls. I can only trust that you’ve described it accurately, but I really didn’t need to know that.

Pay attention to 2 things…

(1) During the clinch, Joe’s expression shows pain. Seems like he came in fighting with some sort of bad injury already.

(2) That judo toss, Joe landed fully on his hips. All the force is on his hips, not spread out on his back. It hurts 10 times as much.

I took judo before, and being toss is no fun at all. That’s why most people quit judo because of being toss during pratice.

People GIVE ME A BREAK!! That was a great fight and a great throw on Devela’s part. All this crap about Joe was hurt before and he threw the fight and bla bla bla is just that…crap. YES he did have a back injury before, however, this was his third time back in the ring since his injury. He was cleared by the doctors and he chose to fight, and he lost. Riggs said he thinks the fight against Devela was just going to be a walk threw which is why he still had is fight coming up in a few weeks in March. Devela said, I am going to go in there get him in a clinch, take him down, and then go for the knock out, which if you were watching….he would have gotten the knock out. It was an AWESOME throw, if you can’t take it don’t fight. Joe did not go in there thinking Devela would be tough, he underestimated him and got is butt kicked, so give Devela credit after all he told Joe what he was going to do to him, and he did just that!!

Reply- To SMACK

It’s not even a good way to win? should be illegal? Are you kidding me? Go watch bowling or something. The FIRST thing you learn in Judo/JJ is how to fall correctly. Which Joe didn’t. Unless Diesel had an injury, the throw didn’t hurt that bad. Devala landing on top of him that broke a rib or two. During training, you go slow. That was full speed, and Diesel got caught. Just like an overhand right. Beautiful, clean, legal, an MMA-TKO by definition.

J-P Says, in 2-28-2008 at 10:35:57 from 198.103.53.5

These are words straight from Joe’s manager, Ken Pavia. “analogous to the breaking of a hip “… ouch.

“In Saturday’s Strikeforce fight, everything was perfect in preparation: his team, his health, and most important, his mind. He entered nearly a 4-to-1 betting favorite. Well, about 20 seconds into the fight, his opponent, Cory Devela, threw a kick. Joe reached to grab his leg, and I saw him wince in pain. My initial reaction was that it caught his liver — a la De la Hoya vs. Hopkins. He continued to grimace as they clinched on the fence. His opponent moved for a judo throw, and I saw what I thought was Joe tapping as he was being thrown. Once on the ground, he was completely done. A disc in his back had dislodged and impinged on a nerve that ran down his leg.

Joe was carried from the ring on a stretcher. The doctors said the pain was analogous to the breaking of a hip as he pumped him full of morphine. They had to call a special ambulance because of the type of painkillers they administered. Everyone was teary as we waited for the ambulance to get there. Joe turned to the doctor in all seriousness and said, “Doc, when they change me, just know that things are the way they are down there because my metal cup is really cold.“

Needless to say, it broke the tension.

Joe had a scope procedure done Tuesday to deaden the nerve, and his time table for a return is up in the air. As soon as it was completed, he called me from the doctor’s office and demanded the rematch.

“Do not let that kid fight anyone else before me and get exposed,” he said. “I am going to smash him.“

If you bump into Diesel at an event, show him some support. While many fighters are immune to the compliments because they come so frequently, others will acknowledge with appreciation. Whether or not Joe manifests with a reaction, he is really affected by it and takes it to heart. It means a lot to this kid, and he is due for a break.”

Fightgirl… you must be from Bonney Lake. I have hung out with Corey a few times. He is friends with a lot of my friends in Puyallup though I live in CA now. All the props to Corey, but coming from me (someone who has back problems)cleared by doctors or not, it is extremely easy to hurt it again. In Joe’s contract he has the option of having an immediate rematch, which he’ll take. I really hope Cory rips through him, another slam w/no back injury and then some GnP from Cory. But until then you have to respect peoples opinion. (On the other not, Joe shouldn’t ever think any fight is going to be a walk in the park… IT’S FIGHTING)

SmashedYoFace….I am from Bonney Lake, and I know Cory very very very well…I am not disrespecting people’s opinions, I am just saying, every forum I have read, Cory is not getting the credit he deserves and should get. It is all poor Joe. I also have meet Riggs a few times, since I lived in AZ for four years. I am not doubting Riggs was hurt all I am saying he underestimated Cory and thought he would just “walk right through him” which Riggs himself said at weigh ins. We are fully aware Riggs wants a rematch and believe me, Cory will take it cause he will love to prove to Riggs once again that he is not an easy opponent and didn’t win the first time by luck!

He has fought big names but lost each time? I’m tired of watching the guy but if he beats Baroni I will be happy. Not because its a big deal but because Phil Baroni is a Douche…

Thank for all the educated posts. I can’t stress that enough. You don’t see that often. Diesel suffered a hard loss here, and though according to J-P it sounds like a hip, even if it was his back, either way, that’s gotta hurt like hell. But, in accordance with those close to him, props to Cory. First thing I thought was, “Damn, this guy looks huge for 184″. Nice win.

I really think refs should be given whistles… sometimes they can’t get in the middle of the fighters fast enough.

This is not boxing… refs in MMA stand farther away from fighters than in boxing, so whistles would be a huge tools to get the action stopped in time before someone gets really hurt.

I thought of that last night as I watch strikeforce.
