Shields won, but I won’t be watching him cling onto anyone else for an entire fight ever again. That was some boring shit! Too bad Miller didn’t connect during one of their brief exchanges standing up. I would have much rather watched Shields laying on the ground alone…and unconscious.

yeah i don’t doubt shield’s skills. it was just painfully boring to watch this fight – he was fighting not to lose instead of fighting to win. by the time miller had him in trouble in that choke i was prayin he would tap shields. oh well.

Awesome wrestling by Shields! The only reason why Miller hasn’t been grounded and pounded or submitted was the fact that he is a whole weight class larger than Shields and stupid strong. He is a true middle weight and Shields is a welter weight. He was shucking and bucking Shields all night long even though Shields continually got great position with his wrestling skill. If this was a welterweight fight with just another welterweight opponent it would have been over in the second round through submission or ground and pound. Though, I don’t think this is the weight class for Shields, he’s going to be fight a lot of guys who are going to be much bigger than him.

i agree with you guys, jake won fair n square but c’mon just relying on ur wrestling n ground game..ehhh i didnt like it, he keeps doing da same thing over n over..in every fight. yeah its kool bcuz it works for him but sooner or later ppols will catch on. i think his striking looked weak, like it didnt affect jason at all from da looks of it. mayhem was good tho, always scrambling around n avoiding most of the subs. man jake was lucky cause of that bell…i think he knew it was only a few secs till da bell so he didnt tap. he knew his ass was gonna be saved by da bell. if it wer for longer he wud have passed out

Oh if you find this fight boring you should stick to watching boxing or get some Ritalin for your A.D.D . This fight is a classic wrestling chess match which Shields is a master at. It was great watching him continually get great position on Miller. The only reason why he couldn’t finish Miller was as I said before Miller was too big and too strong and a master at avoiding submissions.

There should be some rule that you can’t win by laying on someone for 5 rounds. Shields never came close to finishing or even damaging Miller. I wish when nothing is going on that the ref would stand it up more often. Very boring fight. Miller was the only exciting thing in this fight. Five more seconds and Shields would have been taking a nap.

This was SO disappointing… nobody in their right mind would ever want to watch Shields fight again!! That was very annoying. Miller is the more all around talented ENTERTAINING fighter. Miller sells tickets… Shields makes me wanna watch boxing.

BOOORING! Come to fight – Miller tried. This really should have been declared a no contest – Disappointed Big John didn’t stand them up after 1 minute of the “I’m laying on you” strategy. It was like watching figure skating. Silly moves that basically led to nowhere. It didn’t help the sport at all – TERRIBLE fight!

Shields – YOU SUCK! If that is championship caliber fighting – I won’t watch your fights again. I understand he knew Miller would beat his ass if they stood up, but 5 rounds of this crap. At some point you need to actually fight than hug people all night. THIS FIGHT SUCKED!!!!!

Hate to say this but Jason Mayhem Miller deserved to lose the fight. His inability to stop the takedown and keep it standing is the #1 reason why he lost that fight. Also his Jits was looking kind of off compared to when he fought Jacare. Unless some how Jake is that much stronger jacare, which doesnt surprise me since hes a wrestler.

Ok…I agree with most here, but can someone please tell me(facts) how the judges score these fights?.. I know aggression, octogon control etc etc..but is a takedown worth more than a clean punch?..leg kick more than a full mount? The entire idea of MMA competition originally was have all styles competing to see who is the best fighter.. I understand that to make this possible with athletic commisions the fights need rules to make it a sport but cmon peoples.. Jake shields layed and prayed the entire fight..If it wasnt for rounds he would be sleeping and miller would have won.. Fight camps are already finding loopholes in the sport and if something doesnt change we are gonna keep seeing this over and over again..

I agree with MmaMike. Shields worked for mount and submissions again and again. Lay and pray is what Clay Guida does. This was a great fight. There were so many transitions and escapes. Miller was outclassed on the ground and should have been able to sprawl against a smaller opponent. You guys that think the fight shouldn’t go to the ground don’t seem to understand that the ground game is the only thing that makes this sport different from Muay Thai. You might as well say you don’t like MMA.

That wasn’t lay and pray it was high level grappling – but the best fights show all areas of mma at a high level – usually moving quickly throw all the aspects – this could have been a grappling contest if you take away the small amount of stand up

To the Jake haters……..So if Jake can take miller down at will and then “lay and pray” all night long Miller should win? How about Miller improves his sprawl and then takedown or two? That would have helped. That’s how you beat shields it to KEEP the fight standing. That is the fighters responsibility not the Ref’s. Jake had multipile submission attempts. To say that he layed on him and did nothing is BS. Learn the sport of grappling and MMA.

Are those that get bored with a fight that goes to the ground the same ones that get bored in a 12 round boxing fight?

its not that we are saying miller wins we are just saying that he cannot rely on this all the time. i mean who knows he could have gotten screwed by the judges. never did he convincingly get even close to finishing this fight. he seemed content with just taking him down and laying on top of him. doesnt this remind you guys of old tito ortiz? fought tomato cans layed and prayed then when he ran into chuck and randy he got foiled. jake will not last long. someones going stuff his take downs and make him stand up then hes going to get slapped around.

Shields is the Strikeforce equivalent of Clay Guida. Lays on the guy for as long as he can to win by points. Cung Le will KO him, and he would lose to many in the UFC. 1 trick pony.

lol we aint jake haters, dude, like i said its good it works for him but sooner or later they will catch on, plus this is MMA…MIXED Martial Arts…like one of the guys said..this could have just been a grappling match if u took off the lil stand up they did. if he keeps this up hes gonna get k.o’ed sooner or later. he needs to improve his striking. look he is good at what he does he just needs a lil more. i know some guys who fight exactly like him. now they train more stand up. they r getting better n better. if he trains more kickboxing + the ground game he already has, he wud be very dangerous.

Sooner or later one-dimensional styles get exposed. You can blame age with Matt Hughes, but the reality is he simply hasn’t developed a more well-rounded game like others have. If Shields was in the UFC, he’d have a much harder time going up against counter wrestlers with superior striking like Koscheck, Anthony Johnson, GSP, Trigg, etc.

I think some of you guys missed the fact that Shields wasn’t really laying a praying at all. He got to the mount position, took Millers back and flattened him out, side control numerous times and was in a great position to finish the fight via ground and pound or submission. It’s just Miller wouldn’t cooperate. If you guys are mad that this was a boring fight you should be mad at Miller. He should have just laid there like Sokajou maybe that would make you guys happy.

I think Miller won the fight. I scored the fight 1,2,3 for Miller and 4 and 5 for Shields. I guess the judges don’t count reversals/sweeps.
