Some of the best BJJ I’ve seen. If he had sunk in the figure-4 I would have flown to winnipeg and shook his hand. Really a shame that he didn’t submit MacDonald — He really could have sunk in that kimura, but like kenny florian said (and when kenny florian says anything regarding BJJ, he’s right) he should have squeezed his leg and finished that kimura.

Great win by MacDonald, and respectable loss and good show by Doerksen.

It looked more like MacDonald taking sime cheap shots after Mazagatti stepped in. Well he is “the athlete” and not “the sportsman”. Good thing he pointed out he’s got a “huge fanbase in the UFC” cuz he sure didn’t win any fans with that display. Great match up til that point.

Big John is a commentator for the Fight Network, him Randy Couture and Mauro Ranallo did a pre and post fight show.

The reason Big John isn’t reffing anymore is because it pays little to nothing. And no Dana isn’t cheap, the UFC doesn’t pay the refs the Athletic commissions are the ones in charge of that. From what I remember reading I think refs get maybe $1000 for a UFC card if that even…

WOW this was a good fight to watch. I read reports that Macdonald handled Doerkensen and I thought I was about to watch and ass kicking after Macdonald had a gulotine sunk in for the first 1:30. Hell I would be tired too if I was being choked that long, but joe really pulled through and I would argue and say he one that round. Then the second round came lol….. different story.
P.S. steve mazzagotti is wack, I don’t know where big John is but it has been brutal seeing the many mazzagotti fights of late.

those really were some good transitions in the first round. it did look like some extra cheap shots after the stoppage though.

so funny how mazagatti really is becoming the most hated man in mma. i’m now looking forward to comment threads just to see the latest mazagatti trashings. xD

I’ve never liked or disliked Mazagatti (sp?) but his performance here didn’t help. As near as I can tell he tried to stop the fight but did so by basically getting really close. MacDonald seemed to be unsure if the ref stopped the fight and just kept going (as he should have).

But there should never be any doubt in a fighter’s mind that the match has been stopped. And if that first “attempt” wasn’t a stop attempt, what the hell was it?

It’s better if a fight is stopped a bit late rather than too early like in the GSP fight. Macdonald won a tough fight decisively. Nice to see him back in the win column.

At first I thought Mac was hitting late but if you watch again you see Mazzagatti get close but then pull back before he stops it. After 3 more hits he actually stops it.
Mazzagatti is still better than Herb Dean.

There is a fine line in stopping these fights at the exact right time, and you will rarely if ever land perfectly on the line. The fact is, the ref prevented serious, permanent bodily injury… and that is what the ref is for. Great stoppage, great fight… great job ref.

If he wouldn’t have made sure he was out you would’ve complained about an early stoppage! When you step into the ring you run the risk of bones breaking or of taking a shot or two while you are out but before the ref stops it. That is the risk, that is the game… so quit whining you bunch of panzees.

Mazzagatti was clearly not decisive in his first stoppage. I don’t blame McDonald. Get in there and stop the damn fight or stay out of the way. This middle of the road half hearted bull crap can get a fighter needlessly hurt.

Big John never had these issues, and Mazzagotti just keeps screwing up.

I don’t know what some of you guys are talking about. This was an amazing fight and the ref stopped it at the perfect moment. Doerksen was completely knocked out. Ref didn’t stop it early. Great fight!!! Good canadian boys put on the best show as usual !

I sure Mazagatti reads some of the stuff that’s being said about him regarding early stoppages. I think that made him second guess himself about stopping the fight. His half ass attempt to stop the fight confused Ronald Mac Donald so he let a few more go just to make sure. If you watch the fight Mazagatti didn’t really get in between the fighters, and just knelt beside them with his arm waving in the air. To stop fights you have to get in between the fighters and or push the opposing fighter off. So Mickey Dee had no choice but keep going.

In a Sherdog interview, Jason says that Steve apologized on the bus the next day. Steve said it was his fault and took reponsibility. He was going to stop but wasn’t decisive enough because he was not sure el dirte was out. Maconald hit him a few more times to prove he was out. Steve then stopped it.
