Awesome fight, although it seemed a little more favortism towards Kimbo by the ref was very clear. I think he stopped the fight 3 or 4 punches to early. Looked as if the ref gave Kimbo more chances to recover. It will make one hell of a rematch. Congratulations to both fighters, awesome fight!

Jamie O Says, in 6-1-2008 at 05:12:39 from

Yeah, I agree totally. Even still, I thought it was a premature stoppage.. and dare I say, a bit suspicious as to how it went down.. especially after Kimbo getting away with eating all those elbows in the 2nd round.

Weez Says, in 6-1-2008 at 05:30:30 from

It definitely played a part I think. That thing was about to burst from the start. LOL.

During the slow-mo replies, that cauliflower was bouncing around like crazy. LOL. Very disgusting.

I was utterly disgusted when I saw that thing. And that s*** was flopping around and stuff during the fight.. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww GROSS. I think the best fight of the night was the two females.

I would say that because the show was on CBS, the ref was told to stop the fight if it got bloody. Thompson’s corner should have known this and should have taken care of his ear. Remember, MMA today needs to distance itself from the UFC of yesteryear. Crappy fight, but just remember that John McCain was probably watching… well never mind, the fight was way past his bedtime.

Thompson didn’t seem to care that his ear “popped” so why should the ref? This fight was also on after 10 pm in most areas of the country, so why not let it continue? If you don’t want blood in MMA then make the contestants wear head gear.

Personally, I don’t think it was about the ear. It was about the fact that Thompson was winning and Kimbo was so tired he could barely stand. If Thompson had gone another minute or so, he would likely have recovered to some degree, possibly taken Kimbo to the ground for more GNP. And Shaw could not have that, it would have proved Dana White right. I think White already has proven he was anyway.

denox Says, in 6-1-2008 at 10:44:07 from

If only Thompson knows about arm lock, he would be out in the first side control.
Kimbo is a rookie and he was right, he needs to learn a lot.
He will never fight in UFC with that quality.

Principal Skinner Says, in 6-1-2008 at 10:47:16 from

I think the ref stopped the fight cuz he thought Thompson’s inner or middle ear popped. This happens to fighters a lot when they get hit in the ear and the air pressure from the blow damages the ossicular bone or results in vertigo or hearing loss.

It happened to one of my students during recess and had to have surgery to repair it.

I’m not sure that this was the actual case with Thompson since everyone is saying that it was the cauliflower that burst.

btw, Dana White is very unprofessional and I don’t see why people are giving him props on this site.

timmmy Says, in 6-1-2008 at 11:35:02 from

I’m not saying that the fight was fixed, but it looked bad for the sport when the ref jumped in as soon as Kimbo got any advantage.
Thompson’s ear was so obviously engorged that it’s hard to believe that someone or everyone didn’t point out that it needed to be drained.
The fight wasn’t stopped because of the blood it was stopped because the ref thought that Thompson was out on his feet. One of the only ways a fight can be stopped over blood is if the blood is interfering with the vision of the fighter. The ear blood looked bad but would not have interfered with vision.
The fight looked bad for MMA’s first chance on the national stage.

EM Says, in 6-1-2008 at 11:41:11 from

This fight was stopped early, but there might be different rules for non-cable TV regarding blood. The ref didn’t stop the fight when Thompson got his clock rocked a few times, nor when Slice took those elbows to the ground, only when that mass of nastiness exploded (which was a beautiful thing by the way). I’m not sure why Kimbo was so out of shape coming into this match; seems like Bas would have gotten him there. I hope Slice’s training partners are not being to light on him. The fight stoppage that pissed me off was the Smith v. Lawler fight. It was gonna be a classic and some Dr. who probably never watched a MMA fight in her life got startled and called it off. Rematch for both fights please; w/o that Dr. if possible! Gina Carano is a f****** warrior.

bermuda triangle choke Says, in 6-1-2008 at 12:38:11 from

Both fighters suck. Kimbo took 3 rounds to beat an ear up and thompson couldn’t even knock out the ref.

worst still elite xc proved dana white right and set mma back light years.

Rick Says, in 6-1-2008 at 12:54:07 from

I don’t think kimbo really gassed easier than any other heavy weight. JiuJitsu can be really exhausting when you don’t have a clue what you’re doing. All the transitions he did were brute force, vs someone who is 264lbs…

Also, female doctors shouldn’t have the right to stop fights…

eiz Says, in 6-1-2008 at 13:49:07 from

The ref. definitely cannot detect whether someone’s inner ear “popped”. You would need a CT temporal bone to diagnose !

It is common for someone’s tympanic membrane to be ruptured after a blow though. However, with his auriular haematoma (= cauliflower ear), if anything, it would likely have an protective effect as the swelling perhaps have all but closed the ear canal.

His so called “vertigo” and “dizziness” is most probably due to trauma / mild concussion rather than inner ear derangement.

Having said all that… despite I am a Kimbo and Baas fan… I think this fight was UNFAIR and not what MMA should be about.

Pity that it was shown like this to the general public which can be very misleading….

I hope there will be some enquiry into this fight…… wishful thinking though.

RMX SPORTS Says, in 6-1-2008 at 14:28:18 from

Seems like EliteXC used a couple of UFC underachievers as the headliners. Why? I agree w/ Eiz in that I wish someone would investigate this fight. Kimbo is a great fighter, but he is a beginner. Big props to him for headlining a nationally televised event in only his 5th pro bout. Keep up the hard work! BTW, I think Brandon Vera could run circles around Kimbo Slice. Too bad it’ll never happen.

davidash76 Says, in 6-1-2008 at 14:45:46 from

Ultimately the fight took on the same destructive format that has ruined boxing over the years. Kimbo was obvious the MMA product of Elite XC on display and for him to lose would have tanked Gary Shaw’s investment he made in the league and into getting the show on network TV.
What was supposed to be a bum for Kimbo to run through wound up being a fighter far more seasoned that proved to be too much on the ground for Kimbo to deal with. There was an obvious bias in the officiating of the fight.
Kimbo at one time took 23 consecutive elbows from a 264 professional fighter. This is the definition of defenseless or not being able to defend oneself intelligently which in all MMA leagues warrants a stoppage by the ref. Instead, the ref allowed for this beating to continue and Kimbo wound up absorbing about 50 uncontested punches in the span of about 70 seconds. When the round was over, the ref ran to the doctor and explained that the punches were not damaging (not very neutral).
Next round the fight was stopped after Thompson was rocked a few times similar to earlier rounds. Interestingly enough, Thompson was returning punches at the time of the stoppage.
In short, I am not surprised by the result or business tactics used in the Kimbo fight. Ultimately the new product and investment was protected by the promoter. I say not surprised because this is an obvious result given that Gary Shaw is a boxing promoter first. He is experimenting with MMA and has brought the dirty tactics of boxing business into the world of MMA. UFC would be smart to stay away and continue with their tried and true business model which accommodates the fans by providing competition from the best fighters. Lawler and Smith should have been the main event.

Oh well, what was I expecting from a bunch of idiots like Elite XC anyway? Thank God for this site so I can stay current with what is going on with real MMA.

Remember PRIDE FC david Says, in 6-1-2008 at 15:54:04 from

Dirty tactics have been involved in MMA for a long long time now davidash76. Look what happened to Pride FC. Pride was hands down the most honorable of any of the MMA circuits out there. They placed the fighters up on a pedestal and showed them respect for being warriors, not for being cash cows.

And then they got caught up with bribes and threats and Japanese Mafia and all that crap. Pride FC RIP.

I agree that the fight was stopped prematurely but I don’t necessarily agree that they should’ve stopped it when Kimbo was getting ground and pounded. There wasn’t anything behind those punches. So even though 50 punches where thrown, only the first few had anything on them. To each his own though. I respect your opinions davidash.

Tyrone Says, in 6-2-2008 at 03:56:13 from

Isnt there some medical clearance you need to start a fight?

How was that ear NOT going to burst when you see how it looks at the beginning?

HISPANIC PANIC Says, in 6-2-2008 at 13:38:41 from

What is all this crap about the tapout? There was no tapout. Kimbo is not gonna do that, he is gonna break something or be carried out on a strecher before he taps. He proved it. I saw the fight, there were no taps. He looked like he was doin the OK signal, but that’s it.

Thompson’s punches: An above poster was right, the first few were good ones, but he gassed and those punches were like hard slaps. Kimbo can take that punishment. Thompson did have him though, that reminded me of the IFL’s Horodecki and some other fighter who whooped his ass the same way. The difference, Kimbo is alot tougher than ya’ll credit him for.

The stoppage: You all know damn well Thompson was about to croak, Kimbo has his energy back bc he was standing up to fight – that’s Kimbo’s style. It was finally the fight everyone wanted to see, but it was stopped at the wrong moment…that’s like bustin a nut and pulling out at the same time! Sucks!

CBS: OK, ya’ll can say what you want to about it being on TV, but hey it was free and you don’t get that kind of action ANYWHERE for free!
There was just alot of suspense, that’s all. I don’t get why peoples are talkin about they failed. I think the viewers want more!

Ai Guy Says, in 6-2-2008 at 14:06:21 from

Thompson fought SCARED (at least in the first round). He should’ve used the ol’ run-and-gun technique, sprinting at his opponent and start throwing bombs. And that ear was the grossest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Thing had it’s own orbit.

Comparing Kimbo and Fedor . . . . what a moron. You have a brawler rookie with nothing but mad skill and endless potential and then you have the baddest ass MMA fighter that ever was. That’s like saying steak tastes better than milk. Anybody who goes by the name gummo is has obviously seen the movie and conciously chose to call themselves this. My point being there has got to be a couple screws loose somewhere in that white trash head of his. Besides, THE UFC HAS NO HONOR and will eventually putter out due to them treating their fighters like crap and assuming that the fans will continue to put up with inflated BS pricing that doesn’t include a lot of good fights on the card. F-UFC

smarter than you Says, in 6-3-2008 at 14:24:07 from

You could tell the ref was favoring Kimbo throughout the fight. However, I don’t think at any time during the fight was Thompson close to winning. His ground and pound was a good position, but his shots were slow and weak and didn’t come close to finishing; Kimbo was defending nearly the whole time, even though he couldn’t manage an easy sweep. Only if it had gone to decision could thompson win.

Sure the ref could have stopped the fight a few punches later, but he did the right thing in stopping it after the ear had popped. It’s about minimizing the amount of serious injury that could have been caused by more blows to that ear. Not to mention he had F*** eyes when those blows were landing.

Gene Says, in 6-4-2008 at 00:59:43 from

72 unanswered elbows to Kimbo’s head. No changing of position, not intelligently defending himself, any competent ref would have stopped it in the second round…… Oh one more thing, one of the judges actually gave the second round to Kimbo… There is no question that this fight was fixed. I really hope the real fans turn their backs on Elite XC, this “promotion” is a damn joke and lost the little credibility they had in the first place.

Someone complained that the ufc is corrupt and treats their fighters like s***. If the ufc was to fold (it won’t) I would probably stick to training bjj and stop watching mma, pride, and ufc are the only good promotions and the cards are generally good. If you bitch about ufc cards but watch the s*** that elite xc calls a card then you don’t know what your seeing. Kimbo is a can opener….he barely edged out jt with the refs help….jt has lost his last 7 out of 9 against no names and never will be’s. Its free so i watch the carano fights, the rest of the cards are horrible.
