Yeah, I agree totally. Even still, I thought it was a premature stoppage.. and dare I say, a bit suspicious as to how it went down.. especially after Kimbo getting away with eating all those elbows in the 2nd round.

That ear looks about as nasty as Kimbo’s body hair (head, beard, & chest)!

I would say that because the show was on CBS, the ref was told to stop the fight if it got bloody. Thompson’s corner should have known this and should have taken care of his ear. Remember, MMA today needs to distance itself from the UFC of yesteryear. Crappy fight, but just remember that John McCain was probably watching… well never mind, the fight was way past his bedtime.

Thompson didn’t seem to care that his ear “popped” so why should the ref? This fight was also on after 10 pm in most areas of the country, so why not let it continue? If you don’t want blood in MMA then make the contestants wear head gear.

Personally, I don’t think it was about the ear. It was about the fact that Thompson was winning and Kimbo was so tired he could barely stand. If Thompson had gone another minute or so, he would likely have recovered to some degree, possibly taken Kimbo to the ground for more GNP. And Shaw could not have that, it would have proved Dana White right. I think White already has proven he was anyway.

I think the ref stopped the fight cuz he thought Thompson’s inner or middle ear popped. This happens to fighters a lot when they get hit in the ear and the air pressure from the blow damages the ossicular bone or results in vertigo or hearing loss.

It happened to one of my students during recess and had to have surgery to repair it.

I’m not sure that this was the actual case with Thompson since everyone is saying that it was the cauliflower that burst.

btw, Dana White is very unprofessional and I don’t see why people are giving him props on this site.

This fight was stopped early, but there might be different rules for non-cable TV regarding blood. The ref didn’t stop the fight when Thompson got his clock rocked a few times, nor when Slice took those elbows to the ground, only when that mass of nastiness exploded (which was a beautiful thing by the way). I’m not sure why Kimbo was so out of shape coming into this match; seems like Bas would have gotten him there. I hope Slice’s training partners are not being to light on him. The fight stoppage that pissed me off was the Smith v. Lawler fight. It was gonna be a classic and some Dr. who probably never watched a MMA fight in her life got startled and called it off. Rematch for both fights please; w/o that Dr. if possible! Gina Carano is a fucking warrior.

I don’t think kimbo really gassed easier than any other heavy weight. JiuJitsu can be really exhausting when you don’t have a clue what you’re doing. All the transitions he did were brute force, vs someone who is 264lbs…

Also, female doctors shouldn’t have the right to stop fights…

Seems like EliteXC used a couple of UFC underachievers as the headliners. Why? I agree w/ Eiz in that I wish someone would investigate this fight. Kimbo is a great fighter, but he is a beginner. Big props to him for headlining a nationally televised event in only his 5th pro bout. Keep up the hard work! BTW, I think Brandon Vera could run circles around Kimbo Slice. Too bad it’ll never happen.

Ultimately the fight took on the same destructive format that has ruined boxing over the years. Kimbo was obvious the MMA product of Elite XC on display and for him to lose would have tanked Gary Shaw’s investment he made in the league and into getting the show on network TV.
What was supposed to be a bum for Kimbo to run through wound up being a fighter far more seasoned that proved to be too much on the ground for Kimbo to deal with. There was an obvious bias in the officiating of the fight.
Kimbo at one time took 23 consecutive elbows from a 264 professional fighter. This is the definition of defenseless or not being able to defend oneself intelligently which in all MMA leagues warrants a stoppage by the ref. Instead, the ref allowed for this beating to continue and Kimbo wound up absorbing about 50 uncontested punches in the span of about 70 seconds. When the round was over, the ref ran to the doctor and explained that the punches were not damaging (not very neutral).
Next round the fight was stopped after Thompson was rocked a few times similar to earlier rounds. Interestingly enough, Thompson was returning punches at the time of the stoppage.
In short, I am not surprised by the result or business tactics used in the Kimbo fight. Ultimately the new product and investment was protected by the promoter. I say not surprised because this is an obvious result given that Gary Shaw is a boxing promoter first. He is experimenting with MMA and has brought the dirty tactics of boxing business into the world of MMA. UFC would be smart to stay away and continue with their tried and true business model which accommodates the fans by providing competition from the best fighters. Lawler and Smith should have been the main event.

Dirty tactics have been involved in MMA for a long long time now davidash76. Look what happened to Pride FC. Pride was hands down the most honorable of any of the MMA circuits out there. They placed the fighters up on a pedestal and showed them respect for being warriors, not for being cash cows.

And then they got caught up with bribes and threats and Japanese Mafia and all that crap. Pride FC RIP.

I agree that the fight was stopped prematurely but I don’t necessarily agree that they should’ve stopped it when Kimbo was getting ground and pounded. There wasn’t anything behind those punches. So even though 50 punches where thrown, only the first few had anything on them. To each his own though. I respect your opinions davidash.

CBS was watching there butt! And I dont blame them this was a good fight and it was free quit complaining Kimbo looked good for a rookie actually real good!

Thompson fought SCARED (at least in the first round). He should’ve used the ol’ run-and-gun technique, sprinting at his opponent and start throwing bombs. And that ear was the grossest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Thing had it’s own orbit.

You could tell the ref was favoring Kimbo throughout the fight. However, I don’t think at any time during the fight was Thompson close to winning. His ground and pound was a good position, but his shots were slow and weak and didn’t come close to finishing; Kimbo was defending nearly the whole time, even though he couldn’t manage an easy sweep. Only if it had gone to decision could thompson win.

Sure the ref could have stopped the fight a few punches later, but he did the right thing in stopping it after the ear had popped. It’s about minimizing the amount of serious injury that could have been caused by more blows to that ear. Not to mention he had fuck eyes when those blows were landing.
