How can you say the ref stopped this fight early? Houston was clearly knocked the **** out and was stiff and didn’t even have his hands up to defend himself.
The ref made the correct decision and IMO perhaps should of called it off a bit earlier then what he did. Houston was clearly seeing stars after the superman punch.
As for the Karo fight it was also the right call, Karo was dazed and wasn’t defending himself.
To those who disagree they should watch the Lauzon fight to see a fighter who was defending himself (for the most part).
I can understand why the ref stopped the fight, he did go limp for a second there, but in my opinion he should have allowed it to go for a few more seconds. Many times fighters are KO’d momentarily – Houston wasn’t given enough time to recover. He almost started going after the ref he was on him so fast. I’m disappointed, but whatever – shit happens.

The announcer Joe Rogan summed it all up pretty well. It doesn’t matter how quick a fighter is to regain composure, the most important thing for a ref to do is to call the fight as soon as they notice that the fighter is no longer consiously able to defend themselves. Watch the fight over and try to invision it continuing without the ref intervening, houston’s hands are flaled out above his head no longer blocking punches, James would of had free reign on Houston’s skull which would most likely cause permanent brain damage. It’s a risk they most certainly can’t take with peoples lives.
I think it was definitely stopped a little early, we need some Japanese refs in there.

He went limp yet his back and/or nexk were up off the ground the whole time? Gimme a f*ckin break! If you take a look at the initial punch when they were standing, it looked like it didn’t even land at all! Houston went to throw a huge right hand at the same time Irvin did, they both missed and Irvin ended up in close while Houston overthrew and was off balance. Irvin took advantage and pushed him to the ground, that’s where he falls, not from a punch! He then keeps his shoulders off the ground at first and then when the second ground punch came from Irvin he still kept his head off the ground! He may have been dazed but SO THE F*CK WHAT? He still gets a chance to keep going! He wasn’t knocked out, he didn’t tap out and he was still aware of what was going on whether he was guarding his face or not. The ref’s call was complete garbage, not even a standard boxing match would’ve ended with that kind of fall because IT WASN’T A KNOCKOUT!
I thought it was the right call, maybe could have let one more punch go, but Houston was limp and could not defend himself. However, I thought that Parisyan fight shouldn’t have been stopped, he got rocked but he was defending himself.

Fair stoppage, Irvin landed another punch on the button right before Steve pulled him off. If he would have been allowed to keep punching him it would have been just like Thiago Silva and Houston all over again. Silva hit him like 6 times while he was KO’d. And of course Houston complained, he’s a douche bag. He probably doesn’t even remembered getting knocked to his ass, most people who get KTFO like that don’t even realize it happened until they see the replay.

houston alexander sucks. sure , he has punching power,but see why he won the previous matches. when he fought against jardine ,he beat him because jardine didnt know about his punching power , he got caught. next fight , he fought against a can like alessio sakara ,who is negative? in his UFC record and also got knocked out against leben which isnt a top fighter too.

Thats not how it works. You need to be well rounded to be in the ufc ,if you put tyson in the ufc, he can knock some guys out with punching power ,but not for so long , because even the punching strategy in mma is different as in boxing.
And no to mention the ground game ,which houston knows nothing about .he even doesnt know how to put the butterfly guard in the fight vs thiago silva.
Plus , and finally ,he is too old to get well rounder , that would take at least one year and a half or more , in the mantime he will be 40 years old.

That was a good stoppage. It’s completely clear in the replay that Alexander’s hands were sticking straight out into nowhere, he was NOT in control of them. Good recovery for him, but if Mazzagatti hadn’t stopped it, he wouldn’t have recovered at all.
Normally I wouldn’t side with Mazzagatti since he’s pretty much the worst I’ve ever seen in the professional arena, but I think he saved Alexander from a more serious head pounding.

As for the stoppage, great stoppage. The guy went limp, much like shamrock did against tito. They can act like they are fine all they want, but their bodies told a different story.

Good call, no one wants to see a fight end in 8 seconds, but if you are an Alexander fan, you should be happy with this stoppage, otherwise your boy could have been eating the rest of his meals through a straw.
I for one would rather see a fight ended early due to a ref call than the other option of a career ending because a ref let it go too long. That would be horrible for the sport of MMA that is now garnering respect as a “true” mainstream sport.
This IS a proffesional sport and like all pro sports rules are in place, and these rules are enforced by a ref, these refs do not have the benifit of replay( like football and Hockey refs have) so yes the ocassional mistake will be made, this is not one of those mistakes.

Let me make this clear:
The rule isn’t “Does he look like he’s asleep”. The rule is “Is he intelligently defending himself?” and it’s clear that he wasn’t.
In a fight against someone this dangerous if you aren’t defending yourself, you will receive serious injury or worse.
For those of you who haven’t fought, knockouts are a complex thing… Sometimes you get hit and your body keeps going due to reflexes, even though your brain is disconnected. So that’s why the rule says that if you aren’t defending yourself, the fight is over.
Anybody who says that putting your arms to the side with your face exposed is defense…

Whoever said that Mazzagatti messes up the Lesner and Mir fight clearly was passed out for the final two fight of that card. Mir took all that ground and pound Lesner had, and used his small man Jitsu to tap him out with an Achillies leg lock,not a heel hook. Lesner tapped faster than shit. Watch it on this site. The truth does hurt.

Whoever said Mazzagatti messed up the Lesner Mir fight, simply did not watch it. Mir survived the ground and pound, Lesner made a fatal mistake by standing up(Mir already secured his left ankle), then wrapped his legs perfectly using his Lightweight Jitsu skills and secured a Achillies leg Lock. Lesner tapped as soon as he hit the mat. How can a ref mess up a fight when you TAP OUT???? Watch it on this site.

First off, I want to say that I think all fighters should be in agreement to take a little more punishemnt in fights.
In my eyes, I see Alexander getting hit with a nicely angled superman punch that caught him off gaurd, and messed up his equilibrium and subsequently he went down.
As Iriving comes down, Alexander is regainging composure and IMO didn’t really have time to adjust his position. Irving was smothering him, but check this scenario. Say Alexander pulled gaurd, and Irving escaped to attack. Now you have the two men in the same position. If what followed in the fight was to happen in that situation, the fight would not be stoppped. The ref would wait to see if Alexander would defend himself. Same difference. Give people a chance to recover. Just because he wasn;t in the right position to shoot up, and grab a single leg and hold on for dear life to have the chance to recover, doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be given the chance. He’s a fighter, in a fight, taking punches. What’s 2 or 3 more? Sure they may cut or bruise him, but at least there will be no questions.
Also I think 3 5 minute rounds should be re-evaluated. Too many B.S. Judges . I think UFC should instill 3 min rounds, and either go to 5 or 6 rounds. 8 or 10 for championship. That way they only work for 3 min, they getmore chances to rest, and more rounds to finish the fight instead of going to decision. What do you all think about that?

RoyalBeatz07, I believe every fighter who enters the ring or cage has accepted the fact that they are going to take punishment. The fact you might be missing here is that rules and sporting commissions exist to ensure no one gets killed.
When a guy gets hit with a hard shot, falls flat on his back and has both arms straight out to the side as if he’s being crucified he’s in serious need of being saved. It doesn’t matter if he appears to be coming out of it, the fight was rightfully stopped as Alexander could have been seriously hurt.
There is one more factor for a ref in a situation like this to see if he will give a fighter a little extra wiggle room, and that is past performance. Alexander showed absolutely zero ground defence against Thiago Silva when he was knocked out last time. Consider that against a Big Nog fight where he is legendary for being able to be beaten to a pulp and submit someone out of nowhere. These things must factor into a refs mind when calling a fight and I think Mazagatti made the right call.
As for your suggestion on changing rounds to 3 from 5 minutes and having more rounds, I think that’s a great idea, that in itself would ensure higher action fights as there is more rest and less fatigue during each round.
That rule about stopping a fight if a fighter is not intelligently defending himself needs to be re-worded because anybody who throws punches like a boxer and stands toe to toe in the pocket eating one to give one isn’t intelligently defending himself,lol! People who think that it was stopped early are used to boxing were a guy gets knocked down with a concussion and as long as he can get back up before the count of ten, he can get a second concussion and end up dying later that night. That doesn’t happen in mma. And btw that wasn’t technically a superman punch because Irvin didn’t jump through the air, he just faked a kick then threw the KO punch.
