May be a stupid rule, but you still have to feel sorry for the guy that got smashed. That could affect his ability to fight and earn a living for the rest of his life. The fighters agree to obey the rules when they fight. That kick was the equivalent of hitting him with a bat in the head after the match. If you agree to the rules, then the other fighter depends on that agreement for his game plan. The kicker should seriously go to jail and get beat with a rod.

I don’t think anyone can say from that footage that his hand was off the mat. If that guy was to suffer serious injury from the kick, the kicker could be in serious trouble with the law, and it’d be further bad publicity for MMA. The kicker should serve a ban.

The rule needs to be changed to 1 knee equals a downed opponent, not a hand. Everybody needs to follow the rules no matter how bad the rule is, but I don’t have sympathy for the guy trying to find a loophole.

Good disqualification, that being said, the rules most definitely have to change for a couple of reasons:
(1) Having a hand down is an obvious loophole that does nothing for the safety of the fighters, especially when you consider;
(2) When fighters try to use this rule and leave themselves undefended, they are much more likely to suffer devastating blows to the head if they accidentally lift their hand off of the mat, the opponent mis-times their strike (when the hand is still on the mat), or the opponent deliberately strikes the fighter – as in this instance.
(3) The rule was deliberately designed to favor grappling as compared to striking (yes, there is legislative history behind this- the UFC lobbied the athletic commission with regards to the drafting of the unified rules)
That said, it sucks for the guy who was illegally kicked… definitely in agony. But hopefully he learns a lesson and rethinks his game plan.

First of all getting kicked in the head with your hand on the ground is the same as getting kicked in the head standing up. Second, the technicality he’s taking advantage of should be negated by the technicality that his hand came off the mat when the kick landed. Both fighters agreed to stay within the rules,and both fighters fought on the context that the other would abide by these rules.
