excellent display of the most under utilized kick in MMA. Thompson used his front kick like a jab, kept a dangerous striker at bay, and set up a perfect distance for that spinning back kick.

If you aren’t a UFC champion, you’re not a world champion.

Josh Thompson was very game in this fight though. Against any top 5 UFC lightweight, he’d get smoked.

And Bas, man, he’s comedy on the mic.

TABASCOsauce,
i don’t know if you know this or not.. but, a few years ago.. Josh Thomson WAS A TOP 5 LW.

and i’d say that with the exception of BJ Penn, he’d do just fine in the UFC’s LW division.

man, gilbert beat clay guida and he and he climbed the ranks of the ufc. gilbert and josh both were great in pride. i love ufc as well but it’s not the only organization out there with top fighters.

Well, the first comment that comes to my mind is “now people will finally stop calling Gilbert a top-ten lightweight”, but obviously, that’s not true considering that the first damn post (by “Shawn Kemp Jr. #104″) calls him top-ten and not at 155, but rather a pound for pound top-ten fighter (even after two back to back losses to two opponents that I don’t consider top-ten either). Anyone else see what’s wrong with this picture?

Look, Gilbert has great cardio/pace, really good (not quite great) wrestling, and decent striking, but it’s a delusional thought to consider him a top-ten fighter of anything except for Strikeforce. Do people consider guys like Guida, Griffen, Edgar, Maynard, Diaz, etc. to be top-ten at 155 or pound for pound? Absolutely not and that’s because they (like Gilbert) aren’t quite there. I actually think that the above five fighters (except Guida) are more deserving of that status than Gilbert. Either way, I hope the talk of Gilbert being a legitimate top-ten fighter ends, as it’s just unwarranted.

Great fight.

Outside of Penn, Sherk, and perhaps Florian both Gilbert and Josh would do quite well against all the other UFC 155lb fighters.

are you kidding me? that kind of fighter defeated clay guida? melendez is not MMA fighter, no kicks, no takedowns, he only box…. congratulations to the real champion, i want you to see in the UFC..

I’ve watched my share of Pride, UFC, Strikeforce, CageRage, IFL, and the rest - If I were training in MMA, I wouldn’t consider myself a world champ unless I was a UFC champ. Period. I’m not a UFC n*thugger or newbie to MMA. But I’d say maybe 90% of MMA fighters dream to become UFC champions.

Thomson and Melendez are middle road UFC caliber fighters. I didn’t say they weren’t good, but, Penn would rape them. They would be underdogs to Sherk, Florian, Huerta, and Joe Stevenson. I see both losing to Nick Diaz as well. Its like a minor league baseball team beating a major league team. Could it happen? Sure. Could it be entertaining? Sure. Would you bet your house on it? Nope.

I know there’s talent all over the world outside the UFC. I’d love to see my favorite fighter Kid Yamamoto in the UFC/WEC too. But, it ain’t gonna happen.

Watch Roger Huerta take Florian out in their up-coming fight
BJ PENN is the best 55er at the moment. Sherk will have to show that he can get back to his pre-ban level. Was’nt impressed with his tactics against BJ. Thompson is a pretty good fighter, I get the feeling he’d be pushing the top 5 lightweights if he went back in to UFC, but I don’t see him beating Huerta or Penn

jujimanNo Gravatar Says, in 6-29-2008 at 14:31:13 from 70.232.52.185

^^^Stevenson would have to have his act together to get past Thompson or Gilbert. I dont know if he could maintain the pace that those two guys set.

Huerta would have a 50/50 shot against either of them. Look at how Guida was tooling him until he gassed.

Guys Gilbert of Thompson beat in the UFC are

Maynard, Edgar, Pelligrino, and Diaz.

50/50 shot are Stevenson, Huerta, Lauzon, and Griffin.

100% lose to Penn, Florian, and Sherk IMHO.

I think the only weight class dominated by other organizations is the 155lb division. All the rest I have to admit that the UFC dominates.

TOBASCO, sorry dude but I don’t agree with you at all. There are other great fighters fighting elsewhere, and Pride in its heyday was better than the UFC.

Look at your UFC Champs today, Noguiera ex-Pride Heavyweight Champ and also current heavyweight Champ. Quinton Jackson Light heavyweight Champ (ex Pride fighter), Anderson Silva Middleweight Champ (ex Pride fighter).

Top guy in the world today that everyone wants to beat, Fedor Emelianenko doesn’t fight for UFC. Randy Couture is trying desperately to get a chance at him, ask yourself why if he isn’t considered the best?

Was Thomson training with Lyoto Machida? If not, he certainly took some tips from the fighter. He unleashed an arsenal of kicks, punches, and ground skills in this match. It seemed as if he was 100% on while Gilbert was unable to even get footing.

Pretty impressive…

verynicehowmuchNo Gravatar Says, in 7-24-2008 at 21:07:27 from 68.225.150.125

to Niv, yeah… back when pride was around, the UFC did have some pretty stiff competition, but now pride is gone and most of the good ones are now in the UFC… UFC has the best fighter in 155, 170, and 185 pound weight classes. The probably also have the best fighter in the 205 pd weight class, but it’s anyones guess as to who it actually is. UFC has only show difficulty in obtaining and retaining the best HW fighters. It seams that Affliction and the UFC will have to share that weight class.
