This was the first fight that the UFC ever put on. It was so exciting to watch it live because nobody really knew what to expect. |
The fight was a total mismatch. Gerard Gordeau was a very highly regarded Savate fighter out of Amsterdam with many years of combat fighting experience. Teila Tuli on the other hand was a Sumo guy out of Honolulu with no real striking background.
my only wish would be that Ross Pointon was born 10 years eariler so he could of competed in the first UFC, because then the sport of MMA would of been 10 years ahead of what it is now.

Heard about this fight for years. Got a version of UFC 1 on DVD but this and some other fights are’nt on it. Not bad from Gordeau under the old school rules… Nothing special though.
I remember that one. No gloves, not even mouthpieces. Maybe this is why no more Sumo guys even try at MMA.
Thanks for hosting all the videos. Too greedy to do a co-promotion fight and give us the Fedor vs. Couture fight.
“Gordeau was also the world Savate champion and trainer for UFC fighter Remco Pardoel. He is remembered for his illegal eye-gouge of Yuki Nakai in the 1995 Japan Vale Tudo. Nakai went on to beat Gordeau by submission, but lost sight in his right eye from the gouge.”
Gerard Gordeau also bit Royce Gracie’s ear as they were in the clench… Gerard Gordeau is a disgrace to the sport in my opinion.

actually i believe contrary to what was billed that he is a karate fighter, but had competed in a savate tournament and they already had a krotty guy so the billed him as savate.

really interesting. mis-match – hard to say from just this short duration.
if the sumo dude got the takedown it might have been different.
remember that this was early days – there weren’t a lot of precedents.
there was no standard GnP for MMA even
James’ scoop of Gordeau is shocking – what a disgrace. IF eye gouging WAS legal one could say we’ll they knew the risk…
