cspred, it’s not that gonzaga is a bad fighter. Werdum is just not well known. if you’ve seen any of his fights in pride then it would probably be easier to imagine him winning from the start.

gonzaga gave up his plan of attack too soon…..the leg kicks were vicious on the bottom and after a while you knew he was setting up for the cro cop head kick…he should have gone to a plan B

Markus – agreed. Bring in the pride Knees from all fours – or any position.

I wouldn’t like stomps/soccer kicks though against the cage though, that could be deadly. Stomps/Soccer kicks if they are away from the edge of the cage would be good though.

The should change the rules IMO.

Gonzaga does have so much promise in the UFC, unfortunately no one seems to know much about Wardum. Wardum already beat Gonzaga once before. That’s why I was saying that Gonzaga should have had an easier fight after loosing to Couture.

Do you guys think Gonzaga was waiting for the round to end?… it appears that all those punches in the end weren’t really rocking him.

I think that either the UFC wants Gonzaga to have a short career, look at his last three matches…all skilled fighters… Cro-cop, Couture, and Wardum. I mean give the dog a bone, a lighter contender… the UFC likes to pad fighters such as Sylva’s record, why not Gonzaga, why didn’t they put Sylva against Cro-cop or Wardum? Do they want to embarrass the Brazilian fighter?

Is this Joe Silva’s match making skills at work?… He sucks if you ask me… borderline swallowing.

I thought Gonzaga would win this time. In my opinion, it looks more like he ran out of gas rather than he got rocked by the knees.

My point of view on this is:

He didn’t want to make this fight a jiu-jitsu fight and loose again to Werdun on the ground. Same thing as Heath Herring (he didn’t want Nog to sub him on the ground).

Werdum’s training at chute box seems to be paying off.
good fight, just has to work on the leg checks.
strange that gonzaga was scared to grapple with him?

GG did need more cardio and a plan B beyond the leg kicks.
it would have been awesome to see some BJJ chess. it kind of sucks that UFC caters to booing fans who just wanna see dripping blood.

werdum seemed to really adjust well in the 2nd rnd. by staying back away from the leg and than blasting in when HE wanted (as Rogan pointed out)

cspred, it’s not that gonzaga is a bad fighter. Werdum is just not well known. if you’ve seen any of his fights in pride then it would probably be easier to imagine him winning from the start.

here’s the thing (and to Zach, thanks for your input)
true i haven’t seen Werdum in Pride, but this is not Pride, and i have seen him in the cage, but only against Arlovski, and even thought Werdum looked scared to engage with AA, he did land a few nice combos, but appeared “scared to engage”
Gonzaga, on the other hand, DESTOYED Cro-Cop, and i’m not talking about the head kick, (which was AWESOME) .. but the ENTIRE FIRST ROUND he DOMINATED Cro-Cop.
Gonzage was also holding his own with the best HW out there, Couture, until “unfortunately” he was cut, and even though cuts are part of MMA, they do alter a fight and a fighter, just like JoeDaddy the other night (whom i admit was overmatched)
Thanks to all for sharing their thoughts and ESPECIALLY to this website for posting these fight videos.
fyi, imho, it would be nice to see the entrances and post fight comments, but like the man said “beggars can’t be chosers”

how many guys could have taken that 1 hard kick from crocop – let alone grab the leg.
I’ve watch both fights 1 & 2 against werdum and you’ll see GG can catch a kick. lucky – he’d have to be really lucky – like all the time.

I have to agree that Gonzaga seemed to gas once he started really trading punches. Further, he needs to work on the stand-up more in the boxing dept. He should have learned from his fight with Randy Couture to push his opponent against the fence and “dirty box” as well as deliver foot stomps. Gonzaga had the edge in sheer power and should have used it to press the action more to incapacitate his opponent. If the fight was all about kicks, Gonzaga won hands down…

gonzaga was defeated midway in rnd 2, that’s why he looked crappy for the last couple of minutes – he was toast. his cardio cant be so bad cause he still broke couture’s arm after drinking a gallon of noseblood. i agree about werdums knees – there was a moment where werdum reminded me of a very heavyweight anderson silva. eegad!

Best fight of the night. I really like Werdum. Apparently he’s gonna get a title shot after this win. I don’t think he deserves this yet. Give him Brandon Vera next, that’d be a good one.

I think GG knew his cardio sucked, and if he went on the ground with Wardum he would burn out quicker, also very well knowing that he couldn’t out JJ Wardum he decided to keep it standing.

I’m sure Wardum’s corner saw GG tanking… that’s why he went for it on round two, he knew if GG was tired he would have a hard time getting out of the clinch…. It was a good catch by Wardum’s corner.

Vera Vs Wardum… seems like a good match… I’m not sure if very will have a shot at winning that fight.

Vera, Sylva, Eddie Sanchez are kind of boring to watch in many ways, I mean if they were skilled and methodical I wouldn’t my watching, but every time they fight it’s a snooze fest. One HW I’d like the UFC to get is Mark hunt… He’s more of a striker, has a good sprawl to avoid take downs, and is exciting to watch.

But It’d be more exciting if they kinda mix the rules with the Pride FC ones.
You can’t kick or throw knees when he goes down??
That’s easier for wrestlers but what about the guys that mastered this game like Chute Box?
That will make the matches more exciting.

I train with Gonzaga in Ludlow Mass & he didn’t train hard at all for this fight. He is lazy as hell for a guy that just trains for a living. Sometimes the trainers have to wait for him to show up. When UFC was there before this fight to do a “countdown” episode he trained for less than an hour, closer to 30 minutes. And he showed up late for that. He has lost alot of respect from the other fighters in our school (i’m not a fighter myself, maybe soon)
