Freddie Roach Says Nick Diaz Is Not A Good Boxer, Anderson Silva Is Best Boxer In MMA.
I like Freddie Roach. I do. He is the best. However he needs to understand that MMA guys are not boxers that require the same types of footwork required in boxing for running and hiding. See in MMA Freddie, if you use traditional footwork you get taken down. Its not boxing its MMA. GSP is dust if Nick gets past Condit.
One dimensional thinking is ok to focus on a single skill set. Nick is not a boxer he’s an MMA and his mojo seems to be effective.
Nick is a pure 1st class boxer, end off…
Freddie needs to keep his head in boxing and keep out of mma
I agree with the comments posted above. Roach is an AMAZING boxing coach. Nonetheless, MMA boxing its very different from its traditional counter part. If you watch A. Silva, JDS, and the Diaz Brothers which are the guys who have managed to develop a very effective MMA boxing style, you’ll realize that they break several traditional rules, but they do so for obvious reasons (TD, kicks, clinches…). In fact, I believe that it was to some degree detrimental for GSP to focus on learning boxing with Roach, since then his striking has become a very awkward (GSP vs Shields). But who knows it might just take time for him to adapt what hes learning with Freddie.
BJ Penn completely picked Diaz apart in the first round with his boxing… we don’t need any more evidence to see that Diaz is a mediocre boxer with other much more interesting strengths
“BJ Penn completely picked Diaz apart in the first round with his boxing… we don’t need any more evidence to see that Diaz is a mediocre boxer with other much more interesting strengths”
True.
Diaz is a mediocre boxer, but better than most in MMA. Nice use of reach and body shots though.
Diaz has beaten “nobody”! GSP will destroy this fake.
The first few comments are dumb. He’s not a boxer, yes, but that was his point guys, just listen to him. In terms of boxing in MMA he thinks that Silva has better footwork and timing, which he does!
I guess after Freddy has been around so many great boxers that when he sees mma fighters throwing their hands they look like amateurs..
I think the question was who is the best boxer and not who is the best MMA style boxer. So Freddy is correct Nick has good hands but as a boxer he lacks.
All good points but the you get the situations Nate Diaz against Cerrone and Nate beat him up using mostly boxing. There have been many MMA UFC fights and he guys stand up. Or one of them get hit with a good boxing punch and it changes the game completely.
I completely agree that Roach is not an MMA striking coach. I also completely agree that some of what he teaches is completely useless in MMA.
All this said is what he is saying about Diaz true?
As far as I’m concerned — Yes.
Nick has great hands regardless of boxing, kickboxing or MMA, but he also has so/so footwork FOR A TOP 5 WELTERWEIGHT MMA fighter. He isn’t particularly mobile and he pretty much only comes forward.
The problem every welterweight fighter in the world has is this — what are you going to do about it? It is one thing to point out the short comings of a particular style of fighting and a whole different thing to exploit those weaknesses and win against him.
Anyone who beats Diaz is going to do it in a way that avoids fighting him in any direct way. You can only stand and fight Diaz for so long before he wears you down. Sooner or later everybody get’s worn down and breaks fighting Diaz these days. For GSP to win he will need to go in and just take Nick down and hold him on the mat for 25 minutes. Hit him once or twice per round then double leg him and hold him down.
If GSP wins, this fight will be a snooze fest, but it is the only way on paper for him to win. Anything could happen on fight night but GSP’s game plan shouldn’t be a surprise. I’m thinking pretty easy GSP win as long as he sticks to his usual plan. Nothing but luck will save him if he strays from the usual in this case.
ppl dont talk enough about frankie edgars boxing, hes got great footwork and outboxed BJ in their fights and i always thought BJ had some of the slickest boxing in MMA, not to mention frankie has some knockout power to
Roach says that because he trains GSP…lets see how much GSP learns…but one thing is for sure GSP doesnt have the balls to “box” with Nick Diaz…
he was making the point that diaz arm punches, as apposed to punching from the ground up. theres footwork involved in every punch. and maldonado is the best boxer in mma
and if a guy in mma beats up another guy by punching him doesnt mean hes a good boxer, could just mean hes a good striker. boxing is just one form of fighting/punching style.
Nick gets away with all sorts of things most guys can’t because he has a solid chin………..for now. His boxing is top level for MMA, not so good in pro boxing.
His wins over Noons and Daly are legit.
Nick Diaz throws no power behind his punches. Gsp has good power and good boxing. If Nick Diaz beats Carlos which I doubt he will. Gsp will finish Diaz by tkoing him.
FOOTWORK: For all of you saying this is not Boxing and the footwork is not the same or it’s useless; YOU don’t know what your talking about.
Footwork is the number one thing that you MUST learn because of striking and DEFENDING. Diaz has sum footwork but compared to others (ex.Frankie Edgar) he’s an amateur.
All this MMA striking and Boxing is not the same is all BULLSHIT. You have to know how to fight from both leads, the more tools you have the better; and that’s why footwork is so important. Without footwork your jab is nothing and every other punch you throw is NOTHING. Get it right kids
Freddie Roach said ANDERSON SILVA is the best because look what he does in the ring with his footwork and hands. He makes people look like fools. Anderson got his footwork from BOXING!!! He was a pro boxer in Brazil
Also; DISTANCE!! If you don’t know how to calculate distance and how to use your footwork to maneuver around your DONE
Jesus! I’m sick of people saying Penn out-boxed Diaz in the first round of their fight. the first round is a feeling out process, in which Penn only landed 10 more punches. Diaz landed a hundred more punches in the seocnd round, and then landed hundred more punches in the third round. He broke a compustrike record against Penn, which his brother Nate later broke against Cerrone.
Don’t forget guys, Freddie Roach also was the guy that said GSP has great boxing during the GSP vs Jake Shields fight and Roach did help train GSP a bit for that fight, too.
Freddie, the more you speak about MMA the more you come off as a simple opportunist. Not an MMA fan.
Most of the pros don’t have a ‘MMA’ couch. MMA isn’t a style per se. The pros have coaches for wrestling, jui-jitsu, muay thai, boxing, and whatever other style a fighter uses and a head coach who helps the fighter put it all together.
I think Roach is right, Anderson Silva is the best, and the fighters that fight him Only servive because he lets them.
Add freddy cockroach to the list of haters that Nick will silence once he’s champ. Anderson is Apollo creed and Diaz is Rocky, finesse vs heart. War Diaz!!
Guys Roach is right, listen to the comment, Roach says ‘people tell me that he is a good boxer, I disagree he is not a good boxer but he is good wiht his hands’…therefore Roach is right !!! Diaz is not a good boxer but is a great fighter cuz boxing requires additional skills thats all….
He said Nick is not a good boxer, nothing about MMA. He knows boxing and spoke about it. He’s totally correct.
They asked him, he didn’t go around looking for an interview. Roach is what he is, an excellent boxing coach. Period.
Ask him about boxing in mma, and he’ll give you his opinion on BOXING in mma.
I’m sure anybody not agreeing with him isn’t keeping him awake at night.
