Observation: He talked as much about the “door numbers” as he did the actual fight.
Do you ever hear Tom Brady or Tim Duncan talk about franchise profits? No because their job is to win championships and if they do their job, then the ticket sales will come.

This is what can potentially go wrong with MMA: it ends up just like boxing with every fighter promoting the sport in a different way and there is never a clear message.

Imagine if every political campaign staffer went on record with a different newspaper each morning and talked about the candidate’s views.

The parallels are endless but the point is the UFC model (just like NFL, NBA, etc.) is absolutely necessary for the survival of the sport. The brass runs the business and the athletes compete.

Frank has been in the sport a long time and loosing due to a broken arm and not being able to continue shouldn’t ruin his week. He is commenting on the numbers because he’s showing that at least he and Cung are being compensated fairly. Fair fighter compensation is a challenge Frank started tackling long ago, so no one should be surprised to hear him comment on it’s successes.

Are you guys out of you mind?
Do you ever own a business or run a business? Not only he’s a fighter but also own and run a mma school. What else can he talk about? he said he was trying to bang it out with Cung, how success the fight turn out to be, and squash the rumor about his wife. If you an owner and you don’t make any money that mean you lose money for overheads. Just imagine, an average worker makes about $50k/yr. If you an owner you might lose $50k/yr, and work for FREE for a whole year.
If there is no money, we would never see the re-spawn of UFC. Cause the success of UFC, that’s why you have investor investing in EliteXC. We would miss a lot of great fights, if they don’t exist.
I love my job but I don’t do it for free; I have bills just like everyone on earth.
Shamrock… what a great guy!!!

I tend to agree, taylor fightmento. Shamrock seems to utilize his smack talk to cover his own ass. If he wins, he’ll say he did to the other guy exactly what he said he was gonna do. If he loses, he’ll say he was just trying to promote the fight. But, we want to see more than numbers and ticket sales. We want to see guys fighting intelligent fights that will maximize their chances of winning.

Yeah, he brings all the theatrics in the cage, but when your arm gets shattered, maybe another strategy is wise.

And you’re right, the UFC model is best. Let the UFC brand and market the fighters and let them worry about the numbers because you work for THEM, not yourself.

UFC fighters aren’t paid adequately. I think that Shamrock and Le got paid well from their organizations. Perhaps, it’ll encourage UFC to do the same.

He seemed in good spirits. Hopefully he’ll keep the positivity up and keep on rolling. Imagine how bad a forearm to the grill would hurt with a freakin steel plate in it. I thought he had built up some bad kharma coming into that fight, if he keeps the good vibes goin he’ll be right back in the mix. Doesn’t really bother me that he spoke of the numbers, when he retired back in the day (shortyl after beating Titos big ass head in) he did so because he wasn’t being paid like he should. Now he can at least cover his medical bills and still provide a damn good life for his family. Good for him. If we could only all be so lucky.

I’m not saying the fighters should be concerned with the success of the business. I am just saying that their primary focus should be to fight and the organization should be responsible for promoting the brand.

Of course UFC fighters are underpaid in comparison to some other orgs, but what you don’t see if the unchallenged value of their endorsements contracts.

Their endorsement contracts are worth so much more than Elite XC’s because Dana and the UFC has done a great job marketing a brand with a clear and consistent message.

As for questioning me about my business savy, maybe you should ask Gary Shaw why Elite XC lost $20 million last year alone and had to get a loan from Viacom (on top of the existing contract) to stay afloat.

Fight to win Shamrock. Not to sell tickets. Otherwise you might as well be working for De La Hoya.

To Taylor Fightmento, you’re a silly couch critic scrub and you know damn well, sink or float, you dont have the nads to even TRY anything Frank Shamrock does that being run a huge business in a growing sport, fight on a pro level or teach MMA with real confiction, honor or dedication. Frank is doing frank and he did damn well commenting about all that happened that night – what? you’re sittin there with a timer to see how many seconds he spends updating fans on precise details – and to “Drew” exactly how many times have you seen Frank lose?? yea i thought so – and to BIGX Let me see you sign you’re name correctly after a shattered forearm talking about quitting and WEAK, it’s called considering the future and being capable beyond right now! And to FRANK, YOU SAY WHAT EVER THE HELL YOU WANT TO WHOEVER THE HELL YOU WANT WHEN EVER THE HELL YOU WANT – YOU’RE FRANK “THE LEGEND” SHAMROCK -

I think it is great that we have people like Frank promoting for MMA, it gives an alternative to the UFC which pockets most of its profits leaving the actual fighters with very little. Another post said that other athletes don’t ever talk about what amount of money they make, well that’s because they are fairly compensated for their jobs as athletes and it is time that MMA fighters begin to make a proper amount as well.
Frank is a true class act. Great Fight!

It’s really hard to tell if these fighters are getting paid as much as they should. Personally I have no Idea how much money goes into promoting these kinds of events or the overhead it takes to turn the lights on in a place like that. To payout half of the monies of the fight to two fighters doesn’t seem like a smart business decision to me. Pacman got 5million last week for his fight with Marquez with Shamrock making 300k can you really compare Boxing to MMA?????

mygif
Taylor Fightmento Says, in 4-7-2008 at 12:59:28 from 134.186.104.254

For the record: 1) Shamrock is a hell of a promoter and a good businessman. He’s also a great fighter and a great performer.

But he doesn’t own Elite XC. He is employed by them. David Steele, if you went on-line and posted a video diary talking as if you were the owner of Burger King, you’d probably get fired and then I would have to bus my own tray.

MMA is not blowing up. It’s a fully functional, legitimate sport and it’s time for some organization and some management more akin to NFL and less like “Backyard Brawlers 4.”

I’m not saying UFC has it all figured out, but they are the reason the sport is where it is today and that has to be respected.

So I say again: Frank, you fight your heart out, win matches and the fans will pay to watch, you will get paid and you get the respect you deserve. You keep fighting just to sell tickets and bending to the will of the crowd, and you and Tito can have Celebrity Apprentice.

dagreek Says, in 4-11-2008 at 20:19:59 from 99.246.67.55

speaking of his comments on the door sales…he definately cares about the money because he’s in a career that will last MAYBE another 5 years and then he’s done so making money now IS important. The other reason he wants to see the tickets so high is because he and eliteXC is in direct competition with the UFC which is a giant compared to them. So he wants to see them actually grow and succeed.

otherwise, i was really impressed with his out of ring attitude, not such a cocky ass who thinks he’s gonna put everybody to sleep. good little interview he did and he is fairly well spoken.

But, great fight for a guy i really don’t like. He had cung hurting for a while and if not for a broken (and mangled) right arm, it might have been different. can’t wait to see what he does after healing up
