Nogueira beat himself.
He actually looked very good, dominated Mir from the very beginning, was a few seconds away from an eventual win. Then Herb Dean said “watch the shots to the back of the head”, so Nogueira decided to go for a guillotine when in fact he could have just finished it right there with a few more shots.
Props to Mir for the finish though, great finish. Nogueira still impressed me and almost made my night.

I blame it on Herb Dean, for the shots were not as bad as he made them sound, Mir actually just turned his head into them.

Jayce Says, in 12-10-2011 at 23:41:34 from

To be honest though Mir was in a lot of trouble just before that, he seems to be at the same place he was when he fought Carwin, he allows himself to stay in weak positions for too long.

jdogg Says, in 12-10-2011 at 23:44:13 from

As much as Mir hates Brock, If Frank had Brock’s arm in that position, he would have literally snatched it off Brock’s body. I’m pretty sure he would ignore Brock’s taps if they ever fight again.

Muay Thai #1 Says, in 12-10-2011 at 23:46:42 from

Nog should have never dove into a rocked Mir and rolled. Mir is the best BJJ artist on the Heavyweight division. I know Nog has nice BJJ, but Mir is the man with the subs.

Nog should have made him stand back up or GnP. Once Nog locked him up with the triangle choke attempt, I thought this fight would turn.

Kudo to Mir… I love him as a fighter. If he just could not get caught so often with the big punch.

PitfighterZ Says, in 12-10-2011 at 23:58:09 from

Big Nog got too excited and careless. Amazing recover from Mir!
I do think that the strength difference was key here. Minotauro was destroying Mir until Mir had an opportunity to muscle him up and get that arm.
And a break like that might mean the end of his career.

Man I think we all see that Mir is done but damn is he still dangerous. I mean a guy that knocks nobody out nearly KOed Frank in the first minute but that was just an unbelievable transition. Nogueira did not want to tap and didn’t actually tap until his arm snapped. Damn. It is over for Minotauro and unfortunately this is going to give Frank a couple more fights in the UFC that he’ll be KOed in.

julian moran Says, in 12-11-2011 at 00:54:12 from

Nogueira dominated Mir until Herb Dean stated for him to “stop striking the back of the head” (which was not really the case), So under pressure Nogueira decided to rather go for the guillotine, missed it and lost.
If it was not for Herb Dean’s words, A few more strikes from Nogueira and he would have won the fight by tko.

reminds me of MIRvLesnar1. Mir getting beat up pretty good then throws down the sub. @julian moran, nog only had to stop if he was in fact hitting frank in the back of the head. if he wasnt, he should have continued hitting frank and possibly won the fight. the fact that nog stopped when herb told him to means that he WAS hitting him in the back of the head. you cant stop doing something if your not doing it to begin with. frank won this fight fair and square.

@kyokushin…….Just for thought, Masahiko Kimura was more than likely a Mahayana Buddhist, so is not smiling in your Christian heaven. Instead, he was probably reborn (reincarnated) as as a gentle little mouse who IS probably smiling. This win for Mir reminds me of his Brock Lesnar 1 fight. A lucky break (no pun intended in the case of Nogueira)taken to secure the win. Lastly, I would love to see the x-rays. I imaging there is a nasty spiral fracture of the humerus with fragmentation and displacement. Dang.

T H A T W A S W I C K E D ! ! ! I absolutely agree with the “totally unnecessary” comment. It shouldn’t have happened, but Nogueira’s pride got in the way of his good sense. He should have tapped immediately after Mir’s reversal, but I think the thought that he just couldn’t be submitted. PitfighterZ Says, in 12-11-2011 at 12:42:20 from

C’mon now. Mir may have caught a lucky break as Nog stopped punching him in the face, but that double reversal and finish was a thing of beauty. You can only be “lucky” in a fight if you have the technique and the presence of mind to make use of opportunities like that. I don’t care much for Mir and I don’t think he will be champ again, but DAMN! show the guy some respect. He double reversed the most acclaimed BJJ master in the division and took his arm home with him.
That’s the kind of stuff that builds legends!

The fight wasn’t even started and ir was exhausted and slow.He still won though. But I think it’s always an error to give up a dominant position for a guillotine.Must be because he was “pressured” by Herb to not hit the back of the head.If that Frank fights JDS,Reem or Brock again,he will get KOed in seconds…

It’s too bad for Nogueira. He had that fight won and got into a bad position. Most times I think he would have won that. I wish he won. He is such a nice guy. Never talks trash and nobody talks trash to him. He had to say he had staff infection last time cause he did but he meant that respectfully and Mir took it out of content esp seeing the countdown show. Nog proved to have better striking, BJJ and wrestling, just got caught. Nogueira is a big threat to anyone when on his game.

Why is that considered a “submission”. That fight was stopped by the ref and not the fighter. Nogueira never tapped, his arm broke and the ref stopped the fight. Submission attempt…broken arm….stoppage. What am I missing?

Thxer Says, in 12-13-2011 at 00:20:01 from

Woah calm down Mir nuthugger! LOL. It’s not MY fault they were grabbing each others shorts, fool.

Nog almost KO’d Mir standing, I’d hardly call that an ass kicking.

And Joe saying Nog is on another level on the ground is RIDICULOUS. If anything, I gave Mir a big advantage. Nog will get hit in the face 100 times and finally get an armbar given to him; Mir will actively position and attack for submissions.

Tesla Says, in 12-13-2011 at 05:22:18 from

Nog nuthuggers who are whining need to either learn some jits or learn how to show some respect for a tremendous submission. That and learning not to listen to Rogan color the feed. No fight is over or won until it’s called. PERIOD. Saying Nog had that fight won is just plain stupid. Nog didn’t have the power to finish and decided to go to HIS strength (grappling/BJJ) and basically his EGO got him subbed since he thought that there would be no positions on the ground he’d be scared from.

Nog did just fine and was on the way back up to top/back control when Mir did something that surprised him which is kick out over him FASTER THAN Nog realized. Nog knows that he should have blocked the transition or grabbed the leg, but a 260lb man kicking out on top that fast is hard to stop with one arm. Nog got caught with a superb, technical Kimura. Rolling only made it worse and delayed what what a surefire submission. After the roll, and Mir sprawled, Nog should have IMMEDIATELY tapped, but his pride made him wait and he paid the price.

Nog looked neither old or bad, Mir was stunned and not gassed, and Mir obviously was a lot stronger and more patient than Nog expected. AWESOME submission no matter how you cut it.

Man, what an intense showdown and whooped at the end! Replayed the bone-snapping part, half a dozen of times.
Big Nog was an aggressive hungry “alley dog” with high level of confidence and stamina. Impressive.
Mir was totally low-key and humble (perhaps nervous, too) with CCC’s (calm, cool, and collected) energy. He got a big heart.
BNogcould not take Mir down after being taken down earlier, that made me laugh.
