Am I wrong to think that Vera should have had more time? I don’t think so, he wasn’t out, he was blocking punches (Unlike in the Kimbo/Thompson fight) and still should have had more time to try to reverse the situation.

the fight stopped prematurely by a ref who has had similar controversy. i just don’t understand how that was stopped. covering up, defending is a very important part of martial arts, just like striking. i counted 4 shots come in, others were blocked. they didn’t miss, they were blocked. there’s a difference. now vera’s promising career will just be wasted to nothing because of a ref who’s scared to see a little blood. they have to fight again. that’s the only way to settle this. if werdum wins, it validates this match. but if vera wins, then it means miragliotta has done it again. at most that round should have gone to werdum; but that’s it. there should have been a second round. on the second fight, let herb call it.

Although I don’t like that referee and the fact that he is a piece of garbage, I don’t think Vera had much left in the fight because Werdum would not lose the mount instead he would just continue with the ruthless ground and pound and Vera would continue blocking all the punches with his face.

i would have to say the stoppage was a little too early, but not way too early. i dont think those shots were really affecting Vera, but i always tell people that you cant just lay there and cover your face. you need to buck or try and roll.he was moving his legs,but just not trying hard enough to get out.having said that, we need to have a serious discussion with all the top guys in MMA about exactly what defines “intelligent defense”. in my opinion, covering your face when a guy is on top and pounding you is a very intelligent thing to do. i guess they just want to see a fighter trying harder to get out of the position.

we wouldn’t be here complaining of the bad call if vera lost that way. of course you would say werdum was working him up with an armbar. if vera tapped because of the armbar as you were predicting to see, then we wouldn’t even be having this discussion. but that never happened. and some would say vera would’ve come back in the second round to beat on werdum. but that never happened. that is why we need a second fight, to validate this fight. the fight should almost always be decided on by the fighters. this is the best reason why.

and exactly, with a third of a minute remaining, he should have let it go. if vera was truly hurt, the rest period in between rounds would not have helped him, werdum would’ve still pounded him. if vera wasn’t truly hurt, then the second round would be war.

but then, WE DO NEED A SECOND FIGHT.

He was being beat on and he had his gloves in front of his face, shots were getting through so the ref does have a responsibility to ensure the fighters don’t get hurt unnecessarily.

Bottom line here is I’m on the fence leaning towards the fight was justifiably stopped, Werdum earned his victory.

First you guys criticize Dan last week in the kimbo fight saying the 2nd round stoppage wasn’t fast enough, and now when Dan tries to fix this and err on the side of precaution and safety by ending the vera fight in a timely fashion, he’s called out for it.

No, he wasn’t bridging. No, he wasn’t pulling down on Werdum. Werdum was raining punches at a furious pace. Perhaps Vera didn’t want to eat 3 or 4 of them to make the reach up for Werdum’s body. IMO, he was more likely betting that the pace of Werdum’s punches couldn’t continue and he was attempting to weather the storm and let him punch himself out making the escape easier.

Or…perhaps he had an idea of the time remaining and was willing to just block until the round ended. Either way, without a rematch, I’m calling bullshit on the stoppage.

the stoppage was early considering that Werdum does not have KO power and probably would not KO Vera, but i dont think it was horrible since Vera was put into a position where he could not fight back. The fight could have continued but i understand the argument why it was stopped. I’m happy because i picked Fabricio to win considering how underrated he is by n00bs that never heard of him until the arlovski fight, and at the same time overrate Vera as one of the best fighters in the world.

Bosse….in the kimbo fight the main issue the fans had was that Dan stopped the fight way early in the Kimbo fight because Thompson was still standing and fightin in the sloppy manner he had been fighting the whole fight pretty much, it was back and forth James got hit then Thompson got hit, the stoppage was the craziest weakest stoppage ive ever seen, Secondly, in contrast to the stoppage in the Kimbo fight the ref let kimbo take undefended elbows for 2 minutes in a row…..but he didnt let Branden vera take defended gloved punches for 20 seconds.
Fact is, Dan miragliotta, however you spell it, is a shit ref, who, if not being intentionally partial to Kimbo was in the very least inconsistant and erring majorly in his decisions in both these fights.

Hahaha I think a lot of people here are Ufc fan , if you look at Verdum’s fight you would see he’s a machine he took out gonzaga on 2 occasions, this stop was shitty but I have seen way worse in Ufc. I definitely miss Pride where they did not stop the fight until one of the fighter was K.O or bloody and defenseless.About the Kimbo stoppage, no decent human being would had let Thomspon lose his ear which was clearly going to happen without the fight stoppage.

for one, the reason vera had his hands on his face and not all over werdum trying to grab him is you have to understand werdum is a world class jiu jitsu fighter. the reason he was punching away, not even worrying if he was hitting him or not was because he wanted vera to do exactly what you people call intelligent defense, to try and extend his arm and grab werdum, so werdum would catch it and get an arm triangle or an arm bar. vera was intelligently defending because he knew about that. so the best way to keep from getting that arm caught was to defend the way he was defending. and he did a good job in that. he was using his hips to try and get werdum off-balance but it didn’t work. so that was the next best thing to do. i keep my opinion that they should fight again.

Its sad when people start deciding whether to spend money on a PPV by who the ref is. I myself will second guess spending 55 dollars for a HDPPV if Dirty Dan is the ref for some or all of the main events. I thought I had lost all respect for him during the freak show Elite XC event, but I was wrong, there was still some respect to be lost, luckily Dirty Dan is a gamer and imposed his will on both these fighters by ruining a great fight.
