ANAHEIM, Calif., October. 6th — Nam Phan got back to his winning ways Saturday night with a KO over Shad Smith a little over a minute into the main fight of Extreme Fighters World Championships at the Anaheim Convention Center. |
Smith (9-8-2) attacked early, pushing combinations and moving forward. Phan came back well, using his quick footwork to stay out of reach and to look for an opening.
After missing with a right hand, Phan connected with a vicious left hook to the body that locked up Smith. Phan attacked but missed with a overhand right before coming back with a left hook to the jaw that put Smith down for good.
Phan jumped on top of Smith and pounded away until referee Jason Herzog pulled him off at 1:12 of the first round giving him the EFWC’s lightweight crown.
Preston Scharf out-pointed local jiu-jitsu instructor Cleber Luciano. The crowd showed their displeasure with the unanimous decision (29-28 on the three cards) but the scores were accurate. The only round close was the second, Luciano won the first round and Scharf the third. All three judges gave Scharf the second round and awarded him the victory.
Georgi Karakhanyan knocked out Bobby Merrill’s 9 seconds into the 2nd round when he landed a flying knee.
Jennifer Tate took ou Angela Hayes with a armbar at 1:09 of the first round in what was made out to be 1st sanctioned women’s MMA fight in Orange County, Calif.
Fabio Nascimento beat Jesse Juarez with punches at 4:57 of the 1st round. Juarez said he didn’t tapout but it really looked as if he tapped the mat.
Karen Darabedyan won a unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27) over Luke Adams.
Jason Meaders used a knee to end David Rivas’ night the second round.
Mychal Clark got a split-decision win over Josh Griggs (29-28, 29-28 and 28-29) in their three round fight.
Lance Wipf beat out Sevak Magakian with a split-decision (29-28, 29-28 and 28-29) over three rounds.
