you guys are over hyping this fight it was a pretty dominate fight for Alvarez too big and too strong for Hansen to handle…..just look at the arm bar Hansen had on him !!!

SpLaT Says, in 5-11-2008 at 18:12:19 from 99.238.202.193

THAT FIGHT WAS AWESOME!!!!! like how many power punches landed on both sides, then all of those knock down like… YEAH! then the submissions just keep on ticking.

but whats with the no elbows? kind of gay.

No way, I don t think Alvarez was the winner. I think it was a draw. Hansen fell two times, but he was near to submit Alvarez, at least, 4 times, and he scaped. And, Hansen was always forward. It was draw, or for Joachim Hansen. The decision wasn’t right at all.

great fight…but it was clear alvarez was reluctant to use his knees…had he maybe it would have finished earlier…but Hansen…talk about recovery ability! Give that man a beer! haha

Great technical battle!! I don’t think I’ve seen Hansen bullied like that before. It looked like Alvarez’s athleticism and power was the difference here.

Who cares about elbows to the head?? They stop too many fight premature. In DREAM you can knee to the head on the ground. Thats the way it should be! I miss soccerkicks and head stomps though :(

I have to admit, Japanese organizations are so much more exciting. Alot of American organizations, including the UFC have some snoozefest fights.

JAB Says, in 5-12-2008 at 01:40:52 from 99.226.129.17

GSP has a twin. I say after Alvarez racks up some more quality wins, he hops onto the UFC bandwagon and establishes himself in the U.S, then goes for GSP. They’re built in the same way, and probably have almost even strength, striking, grappling, and wrestling. Slight advantage in all areas for GSP, but if you were to put Eddie against say..Matt Hughes, i see a huge upset. Dana put it into motion damnit.

Great fight! I think both guys are warriors, I’m glad I wasn’t the only one that thought this fight could have easily been called a draw or even a win for Hansen.

The difference was the knockdowns, but I do believe Hansen kept coming forward pushing the action and almost submitted Alvarez a few times.

Regardless both guys fought well and that is definitely a early candidate for fight of the year.

eddie won the fight, but i think that hansen clearly won the second round. i hope to see hansen in action soon again, this was a hell of a war! hope to see eddie against kawajiri or aoki in the third round.

HANK Says, in 5-12-2008 at 05:58:41 from 71.200.159.230

…not even close until the second round, Alvarez dominated the first round with strikes and takedowns. Hansen clocked him a few times, don’t get me wrong – it just didn’t hurt Alvarez.
I second the opinion that no elbows sucks, it’s a stupid rule just to be different. I can’t think of another reason why Japanese MMA will not allow it…if you are going to allow knees to the head on the ground (were they allowed here? I didn’t read up), then elbows to the head on the ground are not near as damaging, but they do prevent the guy in guard from being so relaxed. Hey if you can’t elbow me in the face, sure I’ll pull guard. But Hansen wasn’t pulling guard every time – he was getting his ass whipped.

alvarez is a great fighter. i’ve nbeen followimg him since the beginning of his career. i mean i dont live too far from his home town. but comparing him to gsp is a little ridiculous. he can’t beat matt hughes. both gsp and hughes are too big for alvarez. i definately see alvarez doing real good in the 155 lbs weight class in the ufc. that is a tough weight class in the ufc. i also think alvarez is going to win this tournament. alvarez is smart, he will not fight in the ufc unless they give him a great contract. we all know the ufc doesn’t pay the fighters like the competition. alvarez will continue to fight outside of the ufc. until the ufc pays the fighters better, from the get-go.

the second round was really close, hansen definetly got the better of alvarez on the ground, but eddie tees off on hellboy at the end of the match. on a whole, i think alvarez deserves the nod, he did more damage, and had 2 pretty good knockdowns. i think scored as a whole alvarez wins, but really in a fight liek this nobody loses, both guys showed crazy heart, and the fans got their moneys worth

Niv Says, in 5-13-2008 at 01:05:22 from 75.155.166.62

Hank I like seeing elbows but there is some logic behind banning elbows from their fights.

Fans love the knockout and knees are one of the best ways to ensure a knockout. Elbows surely can also lead to a knockout, but in reality elbows lead more to brutal fight stopping cuts. How many times have you seen someone cut open with an elbow looking as if they’d just been stabbed? It’s very rare to pull off a KO with an elbow, that is why I think they don’t allow them.

Yes, stopped fights that look like a murder scene in a horror movie. The same problem as in old school valetudo fights with no gloves, more cuts and less knockouts. Two words, ELBOW PADS for f**k’s sake!!!!!!!!

Mike Says, in 5-14-2008 at 01:51:55 from 24.193.16.219

I agree that elbows causes cuts but… taking elbows out changes the fight. Such as, stand up close quarter fighting becomes rabbit punch fests. Also a fighter cannot adequately ground and pound taking away the elbow limits the fighter on top giving some advantage to the fighter on the bottom. All the fighter has too do when he’s on guard is to control the wrist to minimize damage.

Not usually a fan of the DREAM fights (I’ve never though the ropes-ring was a good format for MMA and that it gets in the way more than anything else) but this one was one of the best fights of the year, no doubt. I don’t agree with the decision going unaminously to Alvarez (he dominated the first round, but Hansen had the edge in the 2nd, no question) but I do agree that Alvarez won the fight overall.

Great fight, classy sportsmanship, and tons of heart. Those fighters showed what MMA is all about.

That was an awesome fight from DREAM. I agree that Alvarez won the fight, but the great thing was that it was a full 15 minutes of fighting. Neither fighter gassed early, there wasn’t any of that ground fighting with both fighters just resting on each other between half-hearted blows or playing it safe, just action for 15 minutes. Definitely the fight of the night, but its still way too early to call fight of the year, especially since DREAM seems to want to finish both Grand Prix before the year is out.

Tired Says, in 5-17-2008 at 03:12:17 from 75.80.101.218

Apparently DREAM is letting us vote for the fights for DREAM 4 and 5 in the Gran Prix at their site:

http://www.dreamofficial.com/special/vote/

For the non-Japanese readers among us, you can just run it through Babel-Fish or something else, but letting the fans pick the fights is another awesome idea from DREAM.
