Cruz is the most underated champ in the UFC.He has good boxing good ground and awesome wrestling.I haven’t seen anybody mix striking and takedowns that well since GSP.His hands are low and it sometimes gives him trouble but he has such an awesome footwork that he can still manage to not get hit much.

why is he still carrying around that WEC belt, it has no meaning anymore. should be a good tilt though

The WEC belt will ALWAYS mean something. For years it was the elite for any guy under 155. They had awesome brawls…. sorry you missed them. It would be like saying a former PRIDE belt means nothing.

@kungfu You call that boxing and you call that footwork? Well I’ll tell ya the reason he has zero power is because he has horrible footwork which translates to awkward powerless “boxing”. His “awesome” footwork allowed him to get dropped 3 times against Faber. There is a reason Cruz is fighting on free TV.

@ KungFuLowKick. He has OK footwork, honestly. He gets out of the way well, but runs into WAY too many punches. His timing is wrong, and his style of footwork serves to deplete any of his power. The idea in boxing is to get just barely out of the way, so you can keep your base, and counter quickly (ie, Ali, or Willy Pepp) He dominates his fights, but ALWAYS gets tagged, and not a little, a lot! Just look at his face after everyone of his fights. He always comes out the worse for WEAR. He happens to be the champion of a division that’s ruled by wrestlers and he is the best MMA wrestler in his div. Look at his record, no great strikers whatsoever. That said he is underrated, and doesn’t get the credit he deserves. If he really wants it, he’s gonna have to leave his wrestling div, and take on either Aldo, who’s striking I don’t have to mention, or Edgar/Maynard, either of whom, IMO, are better at mixing striking with takedowns. And you wanna talk about footwork? Then, you have to agree that Edgar has waaay better footwork than Dom. I mean, if you can beat BJ without so much as a scratch….scary. He still moves a little too much though.

This kid will earn respect if he learns to K.O.!!
until then, Cruz will just be another fighter.

@Beast and marvelous
Yeah but this isn’t boxing.Who else but GSP and him combine their takedown and striking like that.It takes good MMA boxing to do that.Plus he’s pretty young and he gets better in boxing everytime.And of course Edgar has way better footwork.There’s no question to ask here.And if he kept his hands up like Edgar’s technical boxing he would be way better.But the way he throws his combo and knee tap(throws 2 punches switches while stepping and does a knee tap)takes a good footwork.Saying he has bad footwork is ridiculous.He maybe doesnt have awesome footwork like I said before but it’s definetly good.And he doesnt punch that hard because he always moves.But I also didn’t say he had good boxing footwork.Because any boxing coach would kill him for switching that much.But like Cruz saud before he trhows his punches to lure peopel into a takedown.And a right handed person will be in the boxing southpaw stance if he wrestles.So when he switches that much it suprises a bit and it helps for his takedowns.

I think when people talk about his “footwork” they don’t mean it in the traditional boxing sense, they mean his “movement”. Dude moves.

He does get hit but the other guy gets hit more. This movement ain’t some kind of gimmick that this kid just thought up, getting on your bicycle has been around forever but most people don’t do it the whole fight because it sucks massive cardio.

I know some guys on here train. Just try to shadow box and move your body as much as this kid does for 2 rounds and keep up his pace. Then when you got that, throw in the grappling that he does in those same 2 rounds.

Now try 5 rounds of that. Ain’t happening boys. You, me, everybody (except the numerous elite cage fighters on this site) would be on a stretcher, dead of a heart attack.

So his “footwork” might not be flawless, but it’s good and when you top that off with unbelievable cardio, you got a world champ.

I agree that Dominick’s cardio is his bread and butter. He can get dropped and recover instantly and he can move like an irritating insect non-stop.
He doesn’t have power in his punches because he never steps directly into the other fighter position and that’s a beautiful defensive move. If he did that, all you had to do was to time his step in and clock him. The fact he always step diagonally, protects him from most power shots. Faber did a great job stepping to the side to catch him, which also shows Faber’s speed.
To stop Dominick, you need a power low-kicker like Aldo, who can ruin his legs with one or two kicks. Or someone who is a faster and better wrestler. I think that’s Mighty Mouse plan. Now, it’s a matter of seeing if that will work.
