I don’t know how Guida absorbed that kick so quickly but he has to have one of the best beards in the game right now.

Well done Sanchez, but like Machida before you, you are going to have to show people you can finish if you want a title shot.

Yeah, great beard on Guida. Now, if only he could figure out how to damage people with it. Where did the kick hit him? It look like he turned his face toward it. Maybe if it hit him on the temple instead of the face he would have gone away.

They said he might have broken his nose, so his nose might have absorbed the shock…

Looks like he got caught with the foot, too, and not the shin.

Still though, dude can take some heat…

Deserving win by Sanchez, though. Training with seven 5s with two fresh sparring partners per round is sick.

Great kick. seemed to me hit him direct in the top teeth! damn good shot to take though.
Great fight, just what I like to see regardless of the result.
Guida always seems to suffer the height difference in the stand up game, so be good to see more kicks and getting inside with effective strikes in the future.

i dont understand why sanchez didnt just stand above and throw uppercuts like most good finishers. instead of jumpin and huggin. meh good stand domination.

ToeKnee…. Clay was already coming in for a takedown. Diego had to stuff it first to keep his dominant position.

If they allowed headbutts again, Guida would be unstoppable…

Round 1 was beautiful, it was the NIGHTMARE of old times…he’s gonna have to be even more badass to handle BJ Penn or K-FLo…..I think Diego needs one more fight, either Tyson Griffon or Gray Maynard or Frankie Edgar, and if he wins, give him the title shot…

Reminiscent of Jon Fitch against GSP

Lemme get this straight. Sanchez couldn’t hang with the boys at welterweight (his natural weight) so he drops to lightweight so he could be bigger than most in the division and he’s getting all this hype? Any real fighter would stay or dominate his division and then challenges himself by moving up to take on bigger, stronger opponents ala Anderson Silva… Not the other way around. This dude’s a punk and he BARELY won that decision against Guida. IMO, Guida won the 2nd and third rounds. Sanchez is going to have a rude awakening when he fights BJ or Kenflo.

mmapunk Says, in 6-21-2009 at 23:10:26 from 71.173.244.75

Wow, what a tough dude! Not only did he absorb this head kick (which was all lower shin) directly on the chin, but it was right after taking that barrage of punches, flying knees, etc. when Sanchez had him caught on the fence at the start of the round. I always knew Guida was tough, displayed excellent cardio, and normally just out-worked guys, but last night he showed that he is probably the “toughest” dude in the 155 division! The fact that he’s made it this far validates that because if you look at Guida, technically speaking, he lacks a great deal of skills and other than his wrestling, usually wins fights by out-working guys with his cardio/pace, his strength, and his “toughness”. I’ve never been a fan of Guida; in fact, I was always slightly annoyed by him, but last night he changed my perception a bit.

WTF are you babbling about MMAman? Real fighters win. Period. Any weak excuse you come up with is trivial and pathetic. And if you think he barely won that fight, then you probably think Kenflo got robbed too when he fought Diego. That was an easy call for Diego. Go and judge boxing matches. I feel you style would be better suited there. On another topic, Guida vs. Maynard = Most boring fight ever LOL.

MMAMAN, I agree. Diego will get murdered by KFLO,BJ, or Frankie Edgar in my opinion. Guida won in my book, but Diego will get the winner of BJ or KFLO, so he will get what’s coming for him.

MMA’man’.. how do you know sanchez natural weight? did you raised him?
Sanchez is a great fighter and deserves the respect. Penn & Florian couldn’t hang with the boys at welterweight either and I’m sure you would love to have their babies by the sounds of it.
Guida is just a cardio freak with long hair who’s not close to sanchez level as a fighter.
Great performance by Sanchez.

I think Sanchez will beat whoever he fights in the LW division. He’s a bad matchup for BJ and is just too big for KenFlo. He might have to beat Gray Maynard before he gets a title shot.

Tondef Says, in 6-22-2009 at 10:09:34 from 72.17.213.220

I agree that Diego kind of ran away from the welterweight division, but he already murdered Kenny Florian. BJ Penn would be a good opponent.

You guys are judging Sanchez based on the outcome of this fight. You have to remember who he fought. Guida, although i never liked the guy has the best cardio, chin and the best jiu jitsu neutralizing technique i have ever seen. Sanchez beat Guida like no other fighter, even better than Nick Diaz
(but guida is bettter now than when he fought Diaz). Sanchez in a way had to outlast guida in the end. The only thing that kept guida from going to the ground was that sanchez’ elbows from the bottom to his head really took its toll. One must really give sanchez his props because he beat one of the most difficult fighters to combat. That was a battle.

Now that I think about it, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more fighters dodging the WW division in both directions as long as GSP is doing what he is doing…especially ground and pounders like Sanchez. And it doesn’t get much better when you jump to MW. So if you want a belt any time soon, you either have to tap out Brock Lesnar or hope that BJ Penn is as easy to pound out as GSP made him look.
