PitFighterZ Says, in 2-21-2009 at 22:45:13 from

The first time in a long, long time that I see a BJJ fighter deserving some respect!
The guy is fast and extremely technical. If he doesn’t get knocked out in the way, he might become a big time fighter!

J_satan_666 Says, in 2-21-2009 at 23:29:38 from

mia is sick but a silva is no bjj slouch either and has better stand up. a silva would obliterate mia

PitFighterZ Says, in 2-22-2009 at 01:05:11 from

I agree. At the moment, Maia still have a lot to improve before he can take on Silva. One nicely put punch and Maia would be licking the floor…

maphead Says, in 2-22-2009 at 01:32:10 from

A Silva will not make it out of the first rnd against Maia. MAIA IS THE REAL DEAL.

mike Says, in 2-22-2009 at 01:37:15 from

yeah i was kinda waiting for him to get dropped he looked a little sloppy on his feet. But to toss sonnen down like that then just throw on the smoothiest triangle ever, he is definitely next in line for silva. Cancel thales vs silva and throw in maia, be much better.

FIGHTtheFIGHT Says, in 2-22-2009 at 01:47:11 from

that just shows again how dominate Maia in the BJJ game…A. Silva is a black belt in BJJ; a lot of ppl don’t realize that…he’s just always knockin ppl out, so his BJJ doesn’t get put to use near as much…I’d like to Silva vs Marquardt 2…Nate’s a beast, and improving rapidly

Irootoko Says, in 2-22-2009 at 01:53:19 from

Franklin, Hendo, Marquardt, Lutter all these guys got in on Silva. The difference is that Silva had an answer for these guys. I think Maia getting on on Silva would be a different story all together.

That is a fight that I would like to see! I get tired of seeing the same type of fighter up against Silva. Maia could bring something different.

Bushidodan Says, in 2-22-2009 at 02:28:24 from

Sonnen is certainly no joke and Maia made him look like a white belt. It’s like watching vintage Rickson and Royce Gracie footage. I’d still like to see Maia in one more fight against an elite 185er before a match-up with Silva. If Maia can put together a similar performance against a Marquardt, Bisping or Henderson, then he definitely should get a title shot. It’s nice to have something to talk about again in the 185 pound division with Maia and Marquardt looking so sharp.

hond2dciv Says, in 2-22-2009 at 03:13:14 from

ahh, man. I was hoping Sonnen would give a better showing.

smack Says, in 2-22-2009 at 03:15:29 from

he gonna die, with that stand up s*** he is using against silva. dead man walking. maybe god will spair him with a knee injury like cote

MMAGiantSilva Says, in 2-22-2009 at 03:23:08 from

A. Silva is over rated as s***.

Thxer Says, in 2-22-2009 at 03:33:49 from

Maia has a really good chance, if it’s one thing AS doesn’t like, it’s a really good sub artist.

Chute Boxe. Says, in 2-22-2009 at 03:46:12 from

Sonnen is not a legitimate name to add to your list of wins. Good for Maia of course. But Chael is a WEC talent. Not a main-card UFC talent. Put him back on the undercard.

beating paulo filho in his worst condition imaginable is not an accomplishment.

Derick Says, in 2-22-2009 at 03:54:03 from

are u sure maia can beat anderson silva that monster? wow ! finally someone in middle weight can have the power to face anderson silva. If anderson silva get down the ground his dead!!!

ortitz Says, in 2-22-2009 at 04:25:23 from

imo,maia can beat anderson silva

Mag Says, in 2-22-2009 at 04:45:40 from

Holy s*** that was awesome, that is rediculously good BJJ.

Maia would destroy Anderson, only IF if got to the ground – which I doubt would happen. Still, the best chance anyone has is to sub Anderson. And Maia is the man to do it, if he can bring the fight to the ground.

dustinbowls Says, in 2-22-2009 at 04:51:06 from

soo sikk, dmian maia is the s***.
bjj fighter puttin together a whizzer/judo toss to the head and then mount with a triangle to finish…beautiful

andysalek Says, in 2-22-2009 at 05:51:40 from

two guys who could beat anderson are maia and palhares- both have great takedowns and would r*** anderson on the ground. not sure if anderson could manage to keep it standing for long… palhares already proven he can take a shot, maia so far didn’t have a chance to show it. more dangerous to maia than anderson would be dan henderson as he’s great wrestler and would do much better than anderson to keep it standing. calling maia one dimensional is bull… everyone does what they do best to win- maia chokes them, anderson beats their faces. both do it regularly and if they collide then i don’t think the betting odds will be so much in silvas favor

Kishoba Says, in 2-22-2009 at 05:52:26 from

I couldn’t agree with you more. I would love to see Silva vs Marquardt 2. Mai looks amazing, and will definitely be on the top of the food chain in years to come, however I think he needs a couple more fights to mature and develop his other skills.

mfshfighter0786 Says, in 2-22-2009 at 11:26:33 from

maia definatly needs some higher level fights whoever said sonnen was wec talent is right. his fight with filo was not impressive. Maia is a little one dimensional but on the ground he would take out anderson. Whoever made the comment about anderson being a black belt in bjj obviously doesn’t know much about bjj. Black belts shows your time spent and level of commitment. And while andersons black belt is no joke he hasn’t competed on even close to the level maia has in bjj plus he used to get tapped out by little asian guys in pride who’s only moves are ankle locks. What do you think would happen if maia got him on the ground?

brian kenny Says, in 2-22-2009 at 12:14:05 from

maia is going to be the next 185 champ… anderson silva lost his hunger.. look at the cote fight.. if cotes knee wasn’t blown out, he might of knocked silva tfo

PitFighterZ Says, in 2-22-2009 at 14:16:52 from

Anyone who says Anderson Silva is overrated hasn’t been paying attention during the last years. Sure he is not invencible (no one is!), but he kicked the asses of the very best fighters in the division, including Franklin, Marquardt and Hendo.
I think Maia has a lot of potential, but call him the real deal this early is just stupid. He hasn’t fought anyone of value so far. Let him try one of the above. If he wins, then we can start (and only start) talking about a title shot.

common sense Says, in 2-22-2009 at 14:56:03 from

a lot of u guys have to be crazy if u think maia can take A.Silva right now. Sonnan is a good fighter, but is nowhere near the level of the spider. if by some chance maia takes silva down, silva only has to be good enough to avoid his submissions or stall for a stand up, and it wouldn’t suprise me if anderson actually submiitted him if he’s not careful.but in a nutshell I like andersons’ chances on off his back more than maia’s chances on his feet because u have to remember no one really knows just how good or great A.Silvas’ Bjj really is. One mistake and it’s all over, ask Lutter or Henderson. Before he gets in there with Silva he better work on his standup and striking defense.

The Black Swordsman Says, in 2-22-2009 at 15:08:51 from

Maia has a chance the fanboys who think Silva is Jesus Christ won’t agree but anyone who really follows the sport knows that Maia has the good to beat Silva. I’m not saying he will but Maia’s got the best MMA BJJ I’ve ever seen and he finds ways to take it to the mat. So let me put it in a way you guys will understand.

Maia > Ryo Chonan > Anderson Silva

Drew Says, in 2-22-2009 at 15:11:07 from

I think Maia is a bad matchup for Silva. The way he can drag guys down and pull guard is very dangerous. But, Marquardt to me is a worse matchup for Maia — probably his next test.

grapefight Says, in 2-22-2009 at 16:14:08 from

if maia and silva does happen.

its going to the ground and the ufc will have a new champion =]

maphead Says, in 2-22-2009 at 16:55:30 from

Maia – Uncrowned champ of the middleweight division. Bring on Silva.

Steinmiller Says, in 2-22-2009 at 19:32:26 from

Maia vs Marquardt needs to happen before either gets a shot at Silva.

min Says, in 2-22-2009 at 21:00:41 from

don’t forget silva vs. lutter

thesharpend Says, in 2-22-2009 at 21:48:55 from

1. Unfortunately, the UFC has abandoned any semblance of a ladder system to lead up to title shots (ie Brock). Even more so, if Silva can get past Leites, who has some big wins, mind you, they will literally throw anyone at him that’s willing to take the fight. Also, he’s going to have another LHW fight in between his next title defences, IMO.

2. Anyone who uses the Chonan fight in an argument relating to Silva’s jits is missing a chromosome. He got caught, and he, nor anyone else, was getting out of that hold. For sure, he hasn’t been working his jits as much as he had pre-Pride, but he has always shown an extremely active guard and solid sub-defence.

3. Maia is for real. As it’s been said, he is one of the first pure BJJ fighters to be able to adapt to the progression of MMA (ie in the last 4 years) and make it look like he can hang with the best wrestlers and strikers out there… He’s fast, extremely technical, and is going to be considerably better than most people’s BJJ trainers… and that’s bad news.

Can’t wait to see him against someone that has a little more. Make it Maia/Marquardt for the next title shot…

dude Says, in 2-22-2009 at 22:54:26 from

Time for nate vs maia for title shot.

Niv Says, in 2-23-2009 at 01:42:03 from

I agree Nate vs Maia would be an excellent match up to decide who takes on Silva next.

I’m one of those that thinks Maia’s jiu jitsu game is definitely capable of dethroning the Spider.

This would be a great matchup as we will see the contrast between styles. I’m well aware of the Spider’s BJJ skills, but there’s no question that Maia’s BJJ is as dominant as Silva’s standup game.

This fight would be crazy, I hope it happens.

bruddah man Says, in 2-23-2009 at 03:48:32 from

travis lutter had anderson silva mounted in the 1st round and went for a sloppy arm bar. doubt demian maia will make the same mistake if put in that position. there are holes in silvas ground game and maia is the perfect guy to expose em. will be a good scrap either way.

red_x Says, in 2-23-2009 at 04:08:49 from

While I agree that Maia’s stand up is nowhere near Silva’s level.
Why are people throwing around Silva’s BJJ Black Belt like it means something?

Did I miss something or was Maia fighting white belts when he won the BJJ world championships?
Also how many BJJ black belts are there in the UFC not worth a crap.

Steamer Bean Says, in 2-23-2009 at 06:20:39 from

gotta love aggressive grappling like that, instead of lying on his back hoping opportunities present themselves, he creates them

brian kenny Says, in 2-23-2009 at 08:02:28 from

lutters jits no where close to maia.. for real!!!!!!

toño Says, in 2-23-2009 at 14:11:57 from

maia doesnt have wrestling….nate and silva have better….i doubt about maia conditioning….he never looks like he can goe 3 rounds strong….maia is weakest than nate and silva….nate and silva have better stand up than maia….but maia have an amazing BJJ…..he can take (can) nate or silva….he have to improve his cardio, defensive standup and wrestling….

paddedummy Says, in 2-23-2009 at 14:32:17 from

Nice. Maia put on a grappling clinic. Like he mentioned in the post fight interview, a fighter who is really skilled can control the other guy without having to hurt him really badly. That doesn’t just apply to ju jutsu, a good striker can pick somebody apart and win on points or make the other guy quit without having to give him brain damage by knocking him out. Arlovski might actually have beaten Fedor if he would have stuck to that game plan.

SEANV Says, in 2-23-2009 at 19:43:52 from

After all that crap Sonnen talked he gets gorilla r**** ??? LOL What a dumb ass…”The run against team quest stops here, and it stops right now!!!!” NOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

mammas boy Says, in 2-24-2009 at 00:30:11 from

Sonnen is a much better wrestler than Silva McDonald is black belt and herman is at that level. Lutter took Silva down while chasing him on his knees. there are black belts then there are world champion black belts then there are guys who tap other world champion black belts (Damion Maia)!!!

Big R Says, in 4-17-2009 at 01:52:10 from

frank mir has been training for demian maia and mir says maia’s jui jitsui makes his black belt look like a purple belt! thats saying alot!
