I think the guy is just talking like the rest of humans do. It is an opinion. No one knows what happened. All we know is that two great fighters fought and one guy definitively won. Leave it there and look forward to Hendo vs Shogun.

Halycron: Dude, allow me to translate. He wasnt satisfied with the approach Cain took in those 50 whatever seconds. Wow, some people never did ‘main idea’ essays in high school I guess… this wasnt a court of law interview, it was a TV interview and you say what comes off the top off ur head, geez…dont make a book about it.

Halcyon, actually clearly you did watch the video. But then didn’t you hear mendez himself agree with helwani and say that it’s not fair to talk about gameplans? i also think that mendez might be correct in that cain was perhaps deliberately calm and maybe needed some more nervous energy to ‘snap into the moment’… I’ve had first rounds of kickboxing or mma competitions where i wasn’t all there and can definitely relate

Ok the comments above reflect a knee jerk reaction. maybe you only read the quotation and didn’t watch the video. mendez doesn’t rag on cain and he gives praise to junior. even though it was only a minute long, Cain was too comfortable in front of Junior. he should have pressed a little more and who knows what that would have brought about. i’m of the opinion that JDS would have won regardless. i think the title and quote are a little misleading. you can’t read tone from a quotation. before watching the video i felt that mendez was attacking his own fighter but after the video i do not. he has great respect for cain and believes that he will once again be the champion

Mendez’s excuses don’t make any sense. I can only suspect he was having a bad day or something.

1. Cain didn’t try to implement his game plan– bottom line end of story.
2. JDS could only win by fighting back with punches so if Cain had implemented his game plan he would have easily won.
3. There was no time to implement his game plan so it isn’t fair to say that he didn’t implement his game plan.

1 and 3 contradict each other. #2 is such an odd statement it is hard to know what to think. Basically #2 is saying if JDS hadn’t knocked Cain out with the first punch he really landed ~clean in the fight then he would have no other way to win. So as long as JDS can’t hit back Cain can easily beat him? This from a striking coach? What?

Why do some people in this sport say basically:
“I don’t want to make excuses, but hold on I’ve got a list of them right here I’d like to read off.”

Why not just be a sportsman and say “Hey, he got us. We can’t wait to fight him again and return the favor”

There was nothing shameful about this loss anyway that might require an excuse. JDS hits like a truck! It’s not like losing to a bum or something.
