Steve Mazaggati should not be a referree for UFC events anymore.. i’ve seen many fights where he does stupid point take aways like that… Lesnar did not intentionally hit Mir in the back of the head…. he TURNED away.. ive seen way worse than that and no point deduction.. I give that fight to Lesnar anyways.. I like Mir but if these two were to meet again I bet it would be different

eric Says, in 2-3-2008 at 02:34:59 from

damm!! frank was gettin his ass handed to him.what a f******
way to win a fight. almost identical to his win over tank.
brock should have kept it on his feet.

FIGHT3R Says, in 2-3-2008 at 02:49:10 from

damn i picked lesnar to to KO in the first and looked like he had it. Then i saw him grab the legs when mir was on the ground and was like oh thats the wrong move but oh well. Everyone knew there was a good shot that he’d get subbed but all in all it wasn’t that horrible.

If he can learn a little more ground game and avoid the silly subs he could be something. This was too quick to judge but everyone knew he was gonna come out and do damage and he did just that.

markus Says, in 2-3-2008 at 02:51:05 from

well thats what he’s good at, fighting from his back.

how tall is mir? he doesn’t look 255. unless he is like 6’5

WWE would be bankedrupt

jason i don’t no what fight yuo say. mir wasn’t scard to fight on his feet, lezner knocked him down. with a punch and took him down within the frist 5sec with a double.

this is how i say the fight going personal Brock is a good fighter strong looked great but was realy undertrained in the ground game. give him 5 – 6months more of trainning and this guy will be back strong and hungry.

Daqn Says, in 2-3-2008 at 03:15:51 from

brock should have let frank up. every one knew that this was way mir was going to win. next time brock, take a breath and think if tangeling with a BJJ master from standing postion is a good idea? well he was dominating and had good ground postioning but he got a bit ahead of himself. s*** happens………..any guesses who lesnar or mir will fight next?

grant Says, in 2-3-2008 at 03:16:13 from

What do you expect, it’s mma. what a little girl? imagine getting pounded by a 300 pounder and still managed to win the fight. besides the fact that he’s not 100% physically. people who’s giving him s*** about that he wouldn’t stand up, it’s mma , you have to be well rounded. standing up, going toe to toe with someone will not make you a better fighter, you gotta to mix it up a bit.for the people who think that stand up is the only manly way to do it, you got the wrong sport, get out, you don’t belong here.

Golden-Arms Says, in 2-3-2008 at 03:22:02 from

at first mir looked in trouble but it was because of the slip trying to throw a kick. Mir has better stand up but brock would have just had more power in his punches and a better chance to knock mir out with one punch. true fight viewers knew this should have been the result and mir came through with beautiful technique and body positioning. Great result for mir, bring on the next challenger, he is back!

sambo rules Says, in 2-3-2008 at 03:22:34 from

If that’s fighting like a girl then I guess lesnar got his ass kicked by a girl n so will u if u think u don’t need to know how to fight from ur back

sasasasa Says, in 2-3-2008 at 03:27:36 from

jason ur dumb its lesnar who got him down in the first place because he was afraid to stand up since he is a wrestler. idiot…

poop Says, in 2-3-2008 at 03:28:07 from

Mir is very lucky. What is he proud of? Getting his ass kicked before being saved by the ref and then tapping out a guy who is probably a white belt in JJ?

Besides the fact of the fight being stopped before a TKO, mir better keep working on his cardio because I doubt he’d even make it past that 1st rnd if it kept going.

Lesnar showed more in this fight can mir did. I am excited to see what lesnar will bring to the HW division. As for mir? Who cares. He’ll get knocked out or tapped out by big nog if he ever gets a shot.

That’s why it’s called Mixed Martial Arts. Sure he was getting beat in the stand up and with the ground and pound but he could have broke Lesnar’s ankle if he wanted to.

Mike Says, in 2-3-2008 at 04:32:53 from

Hey Jason, Lesnar got beat by a dude lying on his back… who’s a little girl? This is MMA my friend not rock em sock em robot. There are many dimensions to this sport, Lesnar is one dimensional he was hell bent on pounding on Mir he didn’t even see the trap he setting for him in the end.

rich Says, in 2-3-2008 at 04:55:20 from

first of all would like to say i was extreamly excited bout this fight….wat a let down. Did someone forget to tell brock that in the ufc there is 3 five min rounds not 30 sec to knock him out. leasner was controlling the fight stand up and he had him in side controll but insisted on that hammer fist bullshit. i dont care how many black belts mir has got in brazilian juitse, if u get an unfit C*** like mir(who look ordanary) in side controll you use your weight to hold that position then mount the prick. but all brock wanted to do is chuck is hands and legs every and get caught in a stupid basic summsion… start chucking hammer fist like crazy late in the second and third rounds when mir would have been fatigued and less likely to capulize on the gifts brock was handing him

mmatko Says, in 2-3-2008 at 05:07:40 from

look when u think about it: this wasn’t a fair fight for Brock Lesnar!!! I mean the guy’s had 1 fight in MMA! & they put him up against a former Heavyweight Champion??? you tell me how that’s fair. doesn’t matter how big lesnar is, the point is that he has virtually zero experience & mir’s a beast in the octagon… brock got a raw deal man…

Mike Says, in 2-3-2008 at 05:32:25 from

Hey poop, just want to let you know that if you’re a white belt in JJ then you have no business fighting in the MMA. Also, how would you like it if a 300 pound ape was hammer fisting you in the back of the head. It was a clear foul. The ref took points because it would only take one clean shot to the back of the head in this weight class to debilitate someone. Oh and lastly, Lesnar looked very rigid and stiff and over muscled. You need to be fluid and flexible in this sport and as to who showed more fight? Mir after taking some shots made Lesnar tap out, give up, and surrender. Please i welcome your response.

Left Hook Larry Says, in 2-3-2008 at 05:54:39 from

Wow, great fight. Glad Mir won 2 b honest cuz i think it’d make mma look really bad if lesnar just came in crushing all these fighters starting with a former champ. Better off this way for Lesnar to start with a loss and work up from there(for the ufc that is). If he did just clean house think of all the hacks that would try and emulate him… xpac? mike tyson? ron artest? I think Lesnar will b great but F*** all those other wannabes. Obviously a fantastic wrestler and athlete already… really pumped to see how good Brock can get.

this is what you get from UFC. they made alot of money from Lesnar. But lesnars first debut fight in UFC and vs x HW champion is completely unfair. UFC doenst have ranks, instead you got this retarded kid picking the fights that are unbalanced. Dana wants to make money not good fights. Lesnar should have fought like 3-5 more fights before fightings someone on Mirs level. Pride fighters dominating the UFC btw. UFC really bad line up of fighters compare to Pride.

Ritchie Says, in 2-3-2008 at 09:28:13 from

Maybe Lesnar should consider stepping down to the minors to gain the much needed experience he lacks while trying to learn the dynamics of mma. He came out strong in this fight, and he is powerful, but he only had a punchers chance in this bout. Frank Mir has been one of the most well rounded fighters in the world of mma since way before his motorcycle accident, back when he was thought to be unbeatable by most. It was great to see him pick up a win by submission as he works to regain his “unbeatable” status.

Steve Says, in 2-3-2008 at 10:07:33 from

well it was an ok fight. I dont get why everyone is calling lesnar a p****. He is a 4 time all american. He has only had 1 mma fight. and ufc is different then mma. In mma you can give shots to the back of the head repeatedly. ufc you cant cause your in the caged octagon as opposed to a ring. i see it lesnar is a good fighter and needs to develope a different fighting style then he will be better. Frank mir is a former champ kind of an unfair fight between the 2. Mir had more experience then lesnar but all-in-all it was a good fight.

Frank Says, in 2-3-2008 at 10:12:47 from

Wow… Well, our WWE fans are still cryin’. Would have, could have, should have… If, If, If…BUT DIDN’T. Now Brock can go back to tryin’ our for pro football or selling Avon or something… Mir is a huge man who uses small-man jiu-jitsu. Better yet, he is a great guy that didn’t run his mouth and just got the job DONE and finished the fight!

brian kenny Says, in 2-3-2008 at 10:29:22 from

i thought lesnar would have more raw striking power from the top with all that weight and power… needs a little more time and development, and a lot of bjj..

Brandon Says, in 2-3-2008 at 10:30:54 from

For those of you that think Mir was getting handled, you don’t know what you are talking about. The fight went exactly as he planned. He knew Lesnar was going to take him down, and he knew that Lesnar would overpower him. He said it himself. So his gameplan was to fight from his guard take a few punches and wait for Lesnar to make a mistake, and he did.

siliconweb Says, in 2-3-2008 at 10:34:33 from

that point being taken away was garbage, there has been way worse with only a warning,I think Lesnar did well for his second fight. He needs to work on his technique big time. Mir didn’t impress me as much as I thought he would, but a win is a win. Both of those fighters will be around for a while.

I’m an huge MMA fan but for you dumbasses that say brock is all size and strenght or talk this WwE crap you are a fool. Brock (like many wrestlers) is naturally going to start out as a ground and pounder, but definately not going to be a BJJ expert. Brock was blatantly robbed by steve, and I am shocked it happened. Mir did a great job submitting him, but he might not have gotten the chance if it wasn’t for the point deduction.

lamdalu Says, in 2-3-2008 at 12:39:29 from

Ok, first off, Mir ain’t no damn pushover, he’s been there before in long fights, he knows what it takes. At the pace Lesnar was pushing, he would have gassed FAST in the first round. Mir is a ex world champ, AND he was in a motorcycle accident that put him out of the UFC, or any other fight org. for 2 years. Not a pushover in the slightest. It’s simply amazing that he is back. WWE is fake as F***, Lesnar had no clue what he was getting himself into. I’ll give him the fact he’s a good wrestler, and he took Mir down hard, and hit him hard, but those hammers to the back of Mirs head were f***** up. Totally illegal, there’s a reason why dumbshits, it’s only slightly harder than your temple back there, and your spinal cord is totally exposed, we’re talking permanent damage. Steve M is a great ref, he prolly should have stood them up faster, after just one shot to the back. Wanna see a bad ref lol, Herb Dean is the worst in MMA, he stands people up in stupid situations. just search in YouTube for Herb Dean screw ups, lol, you won’t find Steve M in that category.

John Says, in 2-3-2008 at 13:01:39 from

Are you guys farking kidding me??? Lesner tapped out, meaning he quit. Part of the UFC is getting a tap, and Mir did exactly that. Yea, he took a few punchs, but that is how frank has always fought. He is still the Former HW champ in the UFC, and he is working on getting back there.

I think all of the hate for Frank is people that only watched this fight because it had lesner. WWE fans are the ones that are butt hurt, and saying Mir lost.

nick Says, in 2-3-2008 at 13:05:01 from

Brock Lesnar is dominate and he will dominate like no1 ever in the ufc has ever done B4…he dominated frank its just he stepped over him and made a mistake every1 loses he dominated frank mir its just when he stepped over him he fell and it was over…UFC better watch out…cause the trains commin through and its Brock Lesnar…to be the biggest guy in the ufc and that quick…it doesnt matter if he is the worst on the ground (in which he isnt) fighting the best on the ground its gonna be hard to get him in a submission unlike frank mir…he just stepped over…and gettin him in an upper body submission….like frank mir tried the armbar how many times?….huh..lol u better mark that out of the things to do list….all in all Brock Lesnar is gonna be the most dominate fighter in the Octagon.

mike Says, in 2-3-2008 at 13:09:08 from

I think Frank was rolling into that punch and he shouldn’t of lost a point for it.
I think if Brock can step up his jujitsu game he could be quite a force with his sheer size and power, and great wrestling skills.

Ceemar1991 Says, in 2-3-2008 at 13:11:07 from

This is exactly the way i thought the fight would turn out. Brock Lesnar only has size. He has no strength. If you hit someone the way he was hitting Mir then they should go out. This only shows that all Lesnar is, is talk. I think his UFC career is going to be straigh down hill. And to BLACKBELTKARATE, an unintentional hit to the back of the head is one thing, but he hit Mir three times while Mazagatti was saying stop. You dont know what you’re talking about so you can just shut the hell up.

popeye314 Says, in 2-3-2008 at 13:24:49 from

I mean Frank Mir is a solid, experienced fighter. Brock needs to fight Tim Sylva…Sylva would get his ass handed to him.

Wow for all the people bashing brock there is a coule of things u have to realize. first is that was his firdt fight in the ufc and i would have to saya he did damn well but just got caught. second is if this guy gets some serious bjj training, you could be looking at the most dominant heavyweight the world of mma has seen. outrageous strength, size, speed, and heart. third is he was not fighting a nobody, frank mir is pretty damn good heavyweight when it comes to submisions. i wish the ufc would have put brock against a striker like tim sylvia, cro cop, or kongo. i guarantee he whips all there asses. we wiil see a much improved brock in his next fight.

No Name Says, in 2-3-2008 at 13:46:36 from

Obviously there are very little people on this forum that can be non bias. WWE vs UFC? The WWE was not represented, only 2 UFC fighters, regardless of there backgrounds. Lets be honest here.
1.Lesnar looked better than most probably expected.
2.Lesnar had Mir in some very compromising positions.
3.Steve M should never have stood up the fighters from one accidental strike to the back of the head, let alone deducted a point without warning for an accidental blow.(listen to Mike and Joe, they both were in awe).
4.Lesnar should have never been thrown to the wolves(Mir) in only his second fight.
5. None us really know how hurt or not Mir ever was.
6. Bottom line: Mir = Winner

PS. Looks like the public perception on Silvia was starting to look positive for him.

mike Says, in 2-3-2008 at 14:16:31 from

Lesnar hits were hard, and it seemed Mir was dazed. Lesnar had bad footing when Mir was on the ground, mir knocked his legs out from under him and put him in a foot lock… it was only expected that an inexperienced Lesnar lossed. He’s lucky he wasn’t in an armbar…mir broke his last opponents wrist to win a fight.

JM Says, in 2-3-2008 at 14:19:40 from

So let me get this stragiht… Lesnar beats the crap out of him, but the other guy grabs his foot and twists it, so he wins? If this is a fight, Lesnar wins, but its not a fight, its a foot twisting contest, so the other guy wins.

bob Says, in 2-3-2008 at 14:50:16 from

CEEMAR 1991: if u were watching the fight frank turned into the strike ,brock hit him twice and steve never gave a warning, in the tyson griffin fight the other guy punch tyson in the back of the head 4 times and all he got was a warning, and to say brock has no strength u are just retarded.

Jeremy Says, in 2-3-2008 at 15:02:12 from

Mir was out of it. That same ref called the first fight and warned that other fighter five times and still didn’t take a point from him. Lesnar did what he said he was gonna do. Not a mark on him. And he isn’t injured so he can continue his crazy workout routine. Lesnar is legit and now we all know that. Mir couldn’t even strike Lesnar and Leznar was faster and more accurate on his feet than Rick was. For Lesnar first fight, you can’t hold it against him for not seeing the swivel leg trap that eventually led to the kneebar; at that point Brock’s stance was too wide anyway. He will be back.

I was a brock hater but he proved he has very good potential. With more training in BJJ he could be a force to reckon with. He was very classy in his interviews. He clearly has the size and strength to over power anyone in that division, he just needs to tune up his skills.

Had you rather bleed a little or WALK WITH A LIMP FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!?? No reply neccessary…Brock Lesnar answered for all you cry babies when he so dominantly tapped to avoid having his leg broken. Those who jumped on it gotta realize that Danna thought he was feedin’ Mir to Lesner, but ooops!, it didn’t quite work out as expected. Kurt Angle and the rest of the WWE Zoo forgot to remind Brock’orilla that he would need a lot more than a big mouth and a one-dimensional game to stop Frank Mir. Yep, we got treated to all the hype and glitz but bottom line, all the pissing and whining that is getting posted in this string is from “experts” who needed a REALITY CHECK and got it! One more thing, hats off to Brock for tapping really well! Ouch, my kneee hurts!!!

1) I am not a fan of WWE or any other entertainment sport wrestling.

A good fight.

I anticipated a submission loss( as many did), UFC one on one showed Lesnar’s training regime, lots of strenght and cardio and only glossed over any of his BJJ trianing or other MMA training.

There is no doubt about it he is a hulk, WWE is entertainment sport, no one denies these gentleman are in good athletic condition, you would have to be to perform thise acrobatics week in and week out. NO ONe HAS EVER SAID THAT wwe is “real fighting”.

Lesnar fell due to inexperience- plain and simple- with some further training he will do well in the UFC or anyother MMA venue.

You can not blame the ref- they make mistakes in all sports
clearly Lesnar was warned re: the back of the head strikes and they were stood up.

For those whining about Lesnar had Mir in the ground and pound and this was a crappy “girly win by leglock” – you bet he did- and guess what superior technique won the fight.
That my friends is MMA

For those whimpering it was an unfair fight” Lesnar’s 1st vs a former champ”- Lesnar could’ve said no- he is a big boy and entered a fight he thought he could win- we’ve all done that- brock will take his lumps ( like all fighters do) learn some lessons about BJJ defense and come back a better MMA fighter for it.

Those are my thoughts for what they are worth.

Cheers everyone till the next big MMA event in March

look what happened Says, in 2-3-2008 at 17:26:43 from

for those who said lesner had no skill, he got out of some arm bars and made some impressive take downs. what he needs to learn is counters, some jujitsu of his own, and most of all he needs to learned to Mount if he full mounted mir would be nothing more than a blood stain on the mat.

Brock lesnar will be great for a few reasons-again.. if he wants to be..

1. He is a millionare.. he can afford the best trainers anywhere and afford to train with the best fighters.

2. He is athletic for his size. Moves great for his weight. He is also a pretty damn good fighter for only 2 fights.

3. He is also strong as hell. I have read some of his lifting stats-amazing. Which means for MMA-he will probably be able to power bomb guys in the air like Rampage has done in the past.

I think he could be great. Frank Mir is awesome-one of my favorites. I thought he would win the fight with a submission-and he did. If Brock trains correctly with BJJ and top notch fighters-he will be a great contendor, possibly champion someday.

Some of you peeps really don’t know s*** about MMA and should not even bother posting. And for the record-it is a shame that was his UFC debut fight. I thought he was outclassed from jumpstreet. Name anyone in the UFC within the last 5 years that had 1 MMA fight , then took on a former HW champion… that’s right, none. Great way to sell tickets, but shitty for Lesnar. I am actually impressed from what I seen from Lesnar, but his BJJ stinks-he needs great improvement to dominate the HW division.

Anyone that doesn’t agree with me, I will gladly argue my points further. If you turn into “ride this beotch!”, then I won’t bother with such uneducated thug drivell.

KC Says, in 2-3-2008 at 18:40:37 from

I couldn’t believe that dumbass ref took a point deduction after ONE hammerfist to the back of the head, EVERY SINGLE OTHER fight i’ve seen in a similar situation, the ref has given a warning first. Mir was simply lucky brock wasn’t being careful, otherwise he would CONTINUE to have been dominated.

Shawn M Says, in 2-3-2008 at 18:49:56 from

I don’t think they should stay out of “real fighting” as you put it.

I think they should learn some skill b4 talking smack and entering a ring where the outcome is not predetermined by a script.

lesnar has proven that he has championship roman greco wrestling skill, he has proven he has size and power, however he has also proven to be elementary in his knowledge of BJJ and defense.

This transition proves to me and I hope others that you can not be a one dimensional Fighter in MMA. I hope this lets other fight sport enthusiasts realize that UFC, Pride and MMA in general is a “real sport”

Cheers as always

How many times have you heard Steve say, “Watch the back of the head!” five times to a fighter during a fight and never do anything. Brock was singled out because of who he is. Frank was getting his ass handed to him and Steve saved his ass in a poor call. Do you people think that love tap of a hammer fist grazing Frank’s head hurt him in any way? But… Frank Mir DID win the fight. Brock lacks the experience against the submission skills of someone like Mir. I would however love to see Brock Lesnar vs. Tim Silvia!

O_O Says, in 2-3-2008 at 20:19:01 from

All you WWE fans are just retarted. Submissions are not fighting? WTF? Brock didnt have to tap out and keep fighting with a broken leg… See how well can he do without his leg!!!

Most ground and pound fighters are not true fighters… They are just muscles with no brain… Its like having a 2000hp car without any steering!! and the result shows exactly that…

Steve is a great ref. It was a great call. People like brock should not be allowed in MMA. He is too reckless. He has no control of himself. A fighter is someone who is skilled in fighting, someone who have control, and not all muscle and swinging wild hoping he will hit something. He might as well low blow frank while he at it or poke his eyes out.

Even if brock wins… he would be just another “strong guy”… not a fighter…

Brendan Says, in 2-3-2008 at 20:57:07 from

It is so funny, how Frank Mir is being critized because he supposedly, fought a white belt, in ground fighting. Well, Brock Lesnar, should have taken more time, to prepare, if he is considered a white belt.
MMA, is still mixed martial arts, right? So, if Brock Lesnar’s ground skills, were not there, why take the fight?
Wether MMA or a street fight, if I fight someone as big as Brock Lesnar, I am not going to trade punches, with a guy that size. Brock Lesnar, is clearly bigger than Frank Mir.
Frank Mir, did what he had to do, to win.
Brock Lesnar, was doing quite well, in the initial part of the fight however, Frank Mir, knowing that this is MMA, used what he felt, may give him the victory. In this fight, it was an ankle lock. Is it illegal?

Mike J. Says, in 2-4-2008 at 00:44:07 from

Exciting fight. I was going for Mir but was a little nervous that Lesnar might overpower him. Anyone else think that the UFC wanted Lesnar to lose? Putting a wrestler with little MMA experience up against one of the top Heavyweight submission fighters in the world. The UFC gets all of the Professional Wrestling fans to watch and see their top “fighter” get beat quickly. No point watching professional wrestling after, all of these juiced up guys pretending to be tough, switch over and watch UFC (Although, after reading the posts of people saying that Mir is a chicken for not standing up, I think WWE fans like to live in fantasy land). All being said, I think that Lesnar showed a lot of potential, give him a few more fights (against guys who are not experts at submission) and more training and he will be pretty dangerous. Thought Mir looked pretty good, hopefully he can get back to the level he was before the accident.

Steve Mazzagatti = Fail Says, in 2-4-2008 at 01:21:27 from

That was so obvious that Mazzagatti favored Mir over Lesnar. Stopping the fight for one hammerfirst, YES ONE HAMMERFIST, and then deducting a point. You could even tell the commentators thought it was bull s***. Joe Rogan was like “wtf…”. Then later when Mir got that white belt bjj submission Mazzagatti even waited a couple of seconds and watched Lesnar lie there in pain from the ankle lock tapping repeatedly. Mazzagatti is such a bitch. BRING BACK BIG JOHN!

Monkboon Says, in 2-4-2008 at 01:32:58 from

Well, it’s all about experience. My first ever watched MMA match was Royce Gracie vs Dan Severn and we know how that ended. Ha-ha, Brock lost but he was really putting a pounding on Mir. If he (Brock) gets some more experience and works on his ground game and escapes, he may become a beast in MMA, but I doubt it, Monk….

rick Says, in 2-4-2008 at 01:35:50 from

1- The fans want to see a fight, not a guy grab your foot untill you tap. I know thats the rules and Mir’s skill but Im saying its boring to watch. Fans want to see a KO.

2- Lesner, you were manhandling him so why not try a real punch. Throwing 30 hammer fists and no elbows or power punches is like watching a girl fight without the hair pulling.

I wanted Brock to win but honestly I have no respect for him after the way he went out at Wrestlemania 20..Him and Bill Goldberg put on the worse match of the night and it was over hyped kinda like he was going into this fight. dirty 7-30 Says, in 2-4-2008 at 05:28:04 from

Some post here is entertaining…thought invoking at their best and funny at their least.

-I agree with the refs decision, considering that Lesnar has very little experience in MMA which equals very little control, and a man his size with little control can be very dangerous. I’m sure Steve doesn’t want to be haunted by some crazy mishap, and shorten his refereeing career.

-I was bit impressed with Lesnar… I wouldn’t say it’s his lack of BJJ at fault, as a wrestler he should have known how to get out/avoid the knee bar (not ankle lock). I think if he knew how to pace the fight, he would have come out with a win. Tim Sylvia is an example of a fighter that usually wins, boring uneventful fights… that’s because he usually paces them. Having said that, I don’t think this fight would have gone the distance, Mir did look over powered, and it looked like he didn’t really have a fight plan, since there really is no info on Lesnar to practice for. One thing Mir knew was that Lesnar was going to make a mistake, and lesnar did. If Lesnar hadn’t gotten all exited and blood thirty I’m pretty sure he would be 2-0. I really don’t think Lesnar should be training with wrestlers, I think it would do him a tonne of good to join a non-wrestling based group… I’d say joining the Rua brothers would be a way to go… starting fresh… non of the “I’m Brock Lesnar” attitude that might effect the way he is treated with his current team. In short he needs to be humbled.

-I was really disappointed with Mir’s performance. He had everything on Lesnar, experience, striking, grappling… and yet Lesnar was controlling the fight. I can see Mir loosing his next fight, I don’t see his BJJ saving his ass against a more seasoned opponent.

Anyone who wants to jump on the anit Lesnar bandwaggon should be ashamed. His debut against a submission specialist? Every single person but Frank Mir loses. UFC can make a lot of $$$ by making Lesnar a success. I’m not saying by any stretch of the imagination that Lesnar should have had an easy fight, infact in my opinion if yopu put him in against Tim Silvia, tim would hve lasted about a minute. The same goes for Herring, Kongo, cro cop.

I have to admit that Lesnar fell for a pretty amateur move. He just didn’t know what to avoid.

But consider how he manhandled Mir for the beginning of the fight. If this guy gets better at BJJ he will be very good!

I think people here were simply looking for a validation of MMA over Pro wrestling. Obviously you are all right, but I have to say that Lesnar did quite well for someone with minimal experience.

Give this guy a year of fights and let him have a rematch. I think you might see a different result.

I thought the ref was wrong to take a point off with out warning, and i’ve watched the fight 3 times. as someone stated earlier mir did a mayweather turn his head round.

For the people saying brock has got no skill are just pure haters of the guy, and will be eating there words.. And i bet are all fans of chucks (who is a tremondous ground fight, not)

Again i wasnt expecting brock to dominate like he did, and he did dominate. Mir was lucky not to have been knock out an did fantastic get the leg lock on but again if he was fighting someone with exp he would of lost the hold..

Viking Says, in 2-4-2008 at 14:05:44 from

I only have two things to say:

Lesnar looked great: I hate WWE, but he was FAST, Sharp and strong. He dominated the once-great Mir. He lost officially, but when Mazaggati stopped it for the “strikes” to the back of the head (one to the side, an accidental one to the back as Mir was rolling face down), I thought that he was stopping the fight, TKO due to strikes! Really, are you f****** serious?! Even Herb Dean is better then that!

A knee Bar?! Really?! On what side of Brock’s knee was Mir? What was Mir extending his hip into? If a judge doesn’t know the difference between a “knee bar” and an ankle lock, he shouldn’t be judging.

Lol, I didn’t know this was a grammar contest? Besides, I type fast and tend to not skim over once finished. By the way, what big words?

Again people, real simple.

Brock is a millionare with a great wrestling background. He can afford to learn BBJ from the best and spar with the best pro boxers, train at the best camps, etc.-IF HE WANTS TO. Please spare me it takes forever to learn BJJ. People learn at different rates. Look at BJ PENN. From what I have read and seen, Brock Lesnar has great athleticism and a very good capacity to learn.

You can take ANY MMA fighter that is a millionare and their game will improve-if the money is spent correctly.

I am sure not many MMA fighters have Lesnar’s back account stats.

your post leads me to believe that you are new to watching MMA, as time passes you will find the ground game as exciting to watch as 2 guys standing up going toe to toe.

If all you like to watch is the stand up then kick bixing or boxing may be your thing.

cheers as always

Yeah the fight was good however i have to say my word on Steve Mazzagatti. This dumb ass needs to warn the fighter first then take off a point second. He f***** Brock in the ass with that call. Because they stopped the action and let Mir stand up. Steve Mazzagatti is an asshole. We needed Big John for that fight. or Herb Dean.

So many people think they watched pride and knew all about mma before all the nubes of UFC and have a chip on their shoulder about it, you really think the fighters give a rats ass? Theres always been elite fighters in both, and now they’re nearly all UFC fighters. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PRIDE FIGHTER SO THEY CAN’T RULE UFC, IF THEY’RE UFC CHAMP THEN THEY’RE A UFC FIGHTER DUMBASSES. Pride/UFC just companies, the fighters just mma employees, how hard is it to understand.

All u guys talk to much..damn shut up!..we all know that Lesnar can take Mir any time and day…I mean come on Frank was out muscled and Lesnar lacked experience, but did you guys see Mir’s face after like 20 sec.?…lol that was embarrassing ..yeah Mir won the fight and there are no excuses, but we can see that Lesnar is capable of doing a lot of damage in the octagon and his dumb trainer needs to show him a little ground moves..Brock Lesnar all the Way!!!..Yea its sad that he lost that fight because many people were counting on him to win.but im glad he lost his first fight because this will only make him a better fighter and will be back in no time. I dont think there will be anyone who will give brock a challenge after his first couple of fights…sorry guys.

i dont understand how the ref stopped a deducted a point…mir turned his body when he was getting pounded in the face…which turned into him getting pounded in the back of the head…i dont get it…that should have been mir not protecting himself…and to take a point away…how lame…watch the last hughes vs. st pierre fight…the ref told pierre 3 time at least to stop punching him in the head…not saying it would have made a difference in the fight…but damn…we gotta have some consistantsy in the UFC…if he would of warned brock during the fight…and not stopped the action then everyone would be talking about brock being the next best thing…and did u see the look on mir’s face…he was confused on what was going on…i dont think he believed it himself that there was a time out…brock will beast the rest of his UFC career…give him 6 months to learn some BJJ defense…and he will show the world that size does matter…i think dana needs to set up brock vs. kimbo slice…backyard brawl of the century

OK, so I HATE pro wrestling. HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT. I hate it almost as much as I love REAL wrestling, having been involved in folkstyle, freestyle and greco roman since the time I was six and all the way through my NCAA Division I career.

That said, why does everyone on here insist on grouping Brock with all the WWE degenerates? He is first and foremost a REAL wrestler. He was NCAA heavyweight runner-up in ’98 and champion in ’99. That is a hell of a background for a career in MMA, provided you get the right training and experience. Didn’t Chuck Ladell get his start as a college wrestler? Dan Severn? Rampage? Matt Hughes?? Point is — wrestlers (REAL ones) have and will continue to be highly competitive in the world of MMA.

Yeah, I was pissed as hell when Brock and Kurt Angle (whose wrestling camps I attended several times) went to WWE after their stellar amateur careers. But when I saw Brock entering the MMA forum, I applauded the move because he was actually trying something worthwile, and I found myself cheering for him to do well. After watching the fight with Mir (who won fair and square), I am more convinced than ever that Brock will become a force in UFC. He was simply at too great a disadvantage because of Mir’s combined pedigree and experience.

Anyway, I just wanted to bring up the fact that this really has NOTHING to do with WWE vs. MMA. Brock Lesnar was a dominant folkstyle wrestler and is so infinitely superior to almost any other pro wrestler (except for guys like Kurt Angle) that it’s not even funny. Give Brock a few more fights under his belt and I guarantee that he will be up there with the top heavies in the business.

Eric Stewart Says, in 2-4-2008 at 21:00:33 from

That was easily the best MMA debut I have seen in ages. Lessnar did what no newbie should be able to do against a former champion – take him down, knock him down, and beat on him relentelessly until Mir’s considerable submission skill came into play decisively. I’d say that was exciting, personally.

Lessnar appears to be extremely fast for his size and he appears to be in maximum physical condition. He is motivated, obviously, and still has some rusty wrestling skill. I find him extremely promising.

Ritchie Says, in 2-4-2008 at 21:02:36 from

Some of these posts never seace to amaze me.
First off, the rules of the UFC state that punches to the back of the head are illegal. If you don’t like the rules, go watch dodgeball on ESPN the ocho. These fighters are given instructions in the dressing rooms before the fight. Who knows what they were told…I am sure that it was explained that punches to the back of the head are illegal…and if the stand up was such a travesty, why isn’t Lesnar mentioning it…Makes you wonder what instructions were given in the dressing room before the fight
Second, the stand up by Steve M. allowed Brock Lesnar do gain a better position when they went back to the ground. He was in Mir’s half guard before the stand up and had side control when they went back to the ground after the stand up.
As far as I am concerned, I think it is about time that one of the refs start enforcing the rules…so I commend Steve M. and I hope Lesnar trains and learns the skills he needs so he will not have to break the rules to be competitive. It TRULY would be a travesty to see some one get injured by an illegal blow, and to a lesser degree, get a victory due to illegal blows. Frank Mir won fair and square….end of story.

First off, I am not a WWF fan by any means. But I don’t think that many people are giving Brock the respect he deserves for going in there with a former heavyweight champion in his second fight. He could have took a fight with a much lesser opponent, but he wanted the competition or else he wouldn’t have signed on for the fight.

As for the fight, I have been watching UFC for 10 years and have never seen anyone not get any warning for a shot to the back of the head. In this case, not only was there no warning, the fight was stopped, a point was taken away, and started again from the standing position. I have never seen anything like this in my years of watching MMA. If this had not happened it looked to me as if the fight would have been stopped due to a TKO by Lesnar. I am in no way discrediting the win by Mir, his submission skills showed, he saw an opening and took it. Brock needs to learn some submission defense, but I think he looked great out there fighting a former champion.

Sour grapes, anyone?… Sounds like the WWE hype-wagon is rollin’ outta town now. Too bad. Those who jumped on it must realize that Kurt Angle and the rest of the WWE Zoo forgot to remind Brock’orilla that he would need a lot more than a big mouth and a one-dimensional game to stop Frank Mir. Yep, we got treated to all of the hype but bottom line, all the pissing and whining that is getting posted in this string is from “experts” who needed a REALITY CHECK and got it! One more thing, hats off to Brock for tapping really well! His millionaire status didn’t help much – did it? Ouch, my kneee hurts!!!

Corey Says, in 2-5-2008 at 05:26:28 from

It wasnt one shot to the back of the head, it was 2 hammer fists, and he visually could SEE hitting Mir in the back of the head. Wanderlei is having some trouble adapting to UFC because elbow strikes to the head are allowed, yet stomping/ kneeing a downed opponent isnt. Dont say Mir got lucky, say Lesnar was consciously breaking the rules, and if that lost him the fight, so be it. He’s unexperienced, and lost to the former world champ, there’s no shame in losing, unless you lose your confidence with the fight.

Corey Says, in 2-5-2008 at 05:32:01 from

One more thing.. did you see HOW EASILY he went from one submission attempt to the next? Did you see how gracefully he took Brock’s leg, swiveled around, took Brock from standing to flat on his face, and made him tap out in nearly a fraction of a second? How can you people say Brock should have, could have won? The second he wasnt able to press all his weight onto his opponent, and use his sheer strength to dominate, he was so vulnerable, it made me wonder WHY they gave him the opportunity to fight Mir at all.

I agree hitting to the back of the head is illegal. Then all refs should have the same standards. In an earlier fight with tyson griffin, tebeau hit tyson 4 or 5 times in the back of the head and he got a warning. So if all refs stopped the fight after one blow to the back of the head and deducted a point without warning then i wouldn’t have a problem with it. Steve M needs to be consistent in his calls.

Anyone that picked Brock over Mir is doesn’t know jack s*** about MMA. He’s a beast but I’ll pick a technical fighter over someone that just has sheer strength anyday. I’m sure this brought over a lot of WWE fans to watch the fight (Smart on Dana’s part) which are probably the ones texting that Brock would win. But Brock would need to train way longer than a year and a half to become a great MMA fighter.

The ref did an interview with an MMA agency, and he said he gave Lesnar a warning, the problem was that the fans couldn’t hear it, nor could the cameras pick it up. He said it was so loud that when he said “lets get it on” he could barely hear it himself. He also said that it is obvious that if it was a controversy, Lesnar’s corner should have said something.

He knew what Mir was doing, which is pretty much what any BJJ guy would do, which is try to tuck himself close to the opponent when they are in half-guard.

Mark my words, Brock will dominate in the hw division. For such a big guy his speed is incredible. His strenght can’t be matched and he has the financial backing to get the best trainers. Give this guy a couple years and a few fights under his belt and he will own. He said this is where he wants to be so he is not going away for a long time. With his wrestling background this guy has a lot of mental toughness and will do what it takes to be on top. Yea he has a lot of learning to do and he is a overgrown kid in the octagon. As he develops his game he will dominate.

Frank is a great fighter and has a lot of exprience yet did u see how fast he took him down. Brock is for real!

dirty 7-30 Says, in 2-7-2008 at 12:12:19 from

Mir is no way, close to being championship material. So he beat Lesnar, did he dominate, in some way, shape or form? His next fight will show he’s not who people thought he was, he will loose. He was a HW champion in an organization that didn’t have HW fighters, or HW fighters with any caliber. That is why Randy chose to go up to HW.

If he was to fight Nogueira, he will loose, Mir is like a mini Nogueira, skills wise.

I don’t mean to rain on Randy’s parade, but he hasn’t fought any one that’s put him in the same category as Fedor. The HW division in the UFC just got better after pride went belly up, and yet Randy hasn’t fought any one from Pride. I don’t really want to make this a UFC vs Pride… but if Randy wants to show he is in the same category as Fedor, fight some one from Pride Fedor beat, like Nogueira.

It was his 2nd fight and he handled Mir completely until the submission. Props to Frank good win against a monster but I gotta believe Brock will be a force with a bit more experience. Mazzagatti was too quick to deduct a point, but thats the way it is.
Don’t write Brock off as just a jacked up Bodybuilding actor… He’s a machine who’s freakishly strong and moves very well for a man so big.. I guess that means Frank did a great job, but Brock will get there if he sticks with MMA.

Smashedyoface Says, in 2-7-2008 at 21:10:22 from

Agreed Turtle… Who ever doesn’t think the point should have been deducted after he got a verbal warning, should go and train then compete and take some hits to the back of the head… it’s really safe and you’ll love it, feels great. Did I mention it’s really safe? It’s easy for people that don’t compete to run their mouths off about “Steve should of done this or that” Stop watching MMA for a sec, take your a** to a gym and spar with no helmet and 4 oz. gloves. Then you might grasp the concept of how dangerous MMA can be.

Dethlok Says, in 2-7-2008 at 21:56:11 from

Mir looked Horrible…. and I’m not sure what the hell Brock Lesner was doing but as an untrained fighter…. I can tell you his ground and pound was horrible. He really needs to train with someone like Matt Hughes (sp?) or Randy Coutour to be effective. With his strength… and a lot of technique he could be unstoppable.

The foul that was called was weak. I don’t fault the ref for stopping the action, but he shouldn’t have taken a point away from Lesnar (not that it mattered with the outcome.) If you’ve been training to do something a certain way for a year and then you start doing it and someone says, “hey, you can’t do that, I’m penalizing you,” it takes that person’s head out of the game. It’s not Lesnars fault MIR was turning his head like that.

Lesnar smirked when it was over though…. He knew regardless… he had $250,000. Had he won he would have gotten a smooth half million… more than all the other salaries on the card combined. He still got more than the winner of the main event.

I ain’t hatin’ on brock… he has time to train and perfect and he’s still pretty darn young. Good stuff overall.

Madman Says, in 2-8-2008 at 01:42:26 from

It was a good fight – went pretty much to plan as many have stated – for Frank Mir. In the interview about a month ago, Frank stated that he KNEW that Lesner was going to hit him. He also anticipated that Lesner was going to go to the ground (as any national wrestling champion would). Frank worked arm/leg bars really hard for this fight – and it showed. I was a little disapointed in the fact that Frank missed TWO arm bar attempts – but the leg slide to the outside of Lesner’s right leg was AWESOME – Lesner had NO idea what Frank was up to when he did that. For those that think Lesner will only need 6 or 7 months of jujitsu to be the champion in the UFC HW division should really re-think what they are saying. Frank (while I’m happy that he won), was NOT in the best shape of his life – and (as many have also pointed out) nowhere near the shape he would need to be in to capture the title again. Taking that into consideration – Lesner would have been beaten even WORSE by a ranked competitor, much less the champ. So six months? Nah, more like a year or two. Also – I agree with those who said that Steve made the right decision in standing the fighters up after the blow to the back of the head. It is no different than when they stop the fight for a nut-kick – except that the blow to the back of the head is much more dangerous – it’s called RULES guys – if you don’t like them – go bare knuckle fighting on YOUTUBE. Simply put – Steve stopped it – penalized the fighter for the infraction, made sure Frank was okay and IMMEDIATELY started the fight when he saw the fighter was okay – what’s the problem???

Brock was like it was said PURE CLASS and took the loss like a man with no excuses, good for him. I think by him showing he could fight, lost and took it so well gained him many more fans than if he would have just destroyed Frank. You know Brock said no excuses so F*** everyone making excuses for Mir saying things like… well he wasn’t in great shape and that s***.

Edge Crusher, you can’t just tweak your BJJ in a few months to become great, especially after showing the skills he has. Have you ever trained BJJ? BJ Penn has been doing jiu jitsu for a long time, since his early teenage years. Jiu Jitsu takes a long time to get good at know matter how quick of a learner you are. You can never know enough, there is always room for improvement and Lesnar wont be a great fighter until he has a year or two more of Jiu Jitsu under his belt. He may win some fights against other strikers or ground and pounders. But most that are well versed in BJJ will do the submit him.

look he’d have to learn bjj for years to play catch up. also the heart of a fighter isn’t determined by skill but by desire. if he’s so strong why didn’t he get out of that knee bar? frank was on the side of the leg as well. quit talking about the point deduction he tapped out. why is everyone a fan of the giant steriod monger anyway? i’m sick of lesnar, put him against heath herring, that kid will smash him.

Lesnar is a physical specimen, but he needs to concentrate more on rounding his skills than his biceps.

For your information I have been training MMA for 4 years and before that I had 27 amatuer boxing bouts. I’ve been hit in the back of the head accidently and intentionally before, I agree it does hurt and is’nt safe, but the point deductiion was harsh.
Don’t be so disrespectful of other peoples opinions…
When was your last fight BIG MOUTH?!!

wow brock had him owned, mir had to pull off a LUCKY submission

Chris Brock Says, in 2-13-2008 at 14:49:45 from

The only way mir can beat brock lesnar is by submission only that fight proved it.”A submission is an easy way out of getting your ass kicked isn’t it frank”

Smashedyoface Says, in 2-13-2008 at 19:02:09 from

Tommy – He was warned before that and if you fight you know that once your warned you can’t do it again. He did! A point was deducted. My last fight was 2 months ago, an amatuer mma bout. Being hit with boxing gloves is a lot different. My buddy I train with was hurt during competition due to strikes in the back of the head, he’s ok now but had to go to the hospital multiple times to get MRI’s and such things done. How many MMA fights have you had over your 4 year course? Do you disregard what a ref tells you? I wasn’t being disrespectful to other peoples opinions I was explaining why Steve shouldn’t be getting the flack that he is.

Ritchie Says, in 2-14-2008 at 14:56:34 from

Who ever said Mir’s submission was lucky needs to watch the fight again and see how it was beautifully set up. As for who ever said that the only way Mir could win was by submission is an idiot also. Thats all I have to say about that. I would be embarrassed if I was stupid enough to post that comment.

For a rookie he was beating up the former champ.
He should have just stepped back and beat him for 3 rounds.
If they fight again Brock will overpower him and win.
He showed class in the loss kudos to Mir he escaped with his life. Mir did not look good!
Brock looked great just a rookie mistake.

Frank Says, in 2-16-2008 at 06:00:35 from

Chris Brock must be a 6th grader. “The only way”… Huh?…
It’s MMA bonehead…

Tommy Says, in 2-17-2008 at 13:51:34 from

Hey Smashed…

My bad. After I made that first post I saw you had written some more and agree with many of your points.
It was just the bitter WWE fans thing that got me going.
I’ve had 7 MMA bouts 3-2-1-1nc… Not a world beatingf record but I do love the sport.
My first post was a bit full on, so as a man I appologize

To everybody that says brock should have let frank up look- brock is a wrestler since he was like 8. thats what he does thats where he feels comftorable is on top. his striking skill suck as much as his juijitsu apparently(Well back in the mir fight at least.) his goal is to get guys on there back and dominate them. He just left a leg open. Silly mistake that I’m sure alot of rookie wrestlers would make. Stop hatin on brock just cuz hes a freak athelete he’s gettin the skillz he needs to become the best. honestly if he fights anybody but mir(and maybe minotauro nogeria) he would beat the hell out of him. The guys a tank and is unstoppable but his juijitsu is still is only hole in his game in my opinion

HaHa33 Says, in 6-28-2009 at 19:00:59 from

Was for frank in the fight but after seeing the way he won I feel robbed of being able to watch a waffle stomp ground and pound. Mazagatti gave that fight to Mir. Way worse and more intentional hits to the back of the head happen all the time and they never take away point and let there be a recovery time. Hate to say it but I hope brock finishes the job he started in 100.
